A GUNMAN armed “with an AK47” has killed two police officers in a suspected terror attack before he was shot dead by police on the Champs-Elysees in central Paris.
Paris police spokeswoman Johanna Primevert said the attacker deliberately targeted police guarding the area near the Franklin Roosevelt subway station about 9pm Thursday (5am Friday AEST).
Police sources told Reuters the gunman was known to security services, with the UK Telegraph reporting his home in east Paris is being searched.
As French President Francois Hollande called an emergency security meeting at Elysée Palace, anti-terrorist prosecutors opened an investigation, indicating the motive is believed to have been terrorism.
