An explosion has occurred at Taiwanese-owned Formosa Plastics Group’s steel mill in central Vietnam’s Ha Tinh province, one day after the facility came online for the first time since causing a catastrophic toxic waste spill in April 2016.

The official Tuoi Tre News quoted vice-chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee Duong Tat Thang as saying the incident occurred at around 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday when congestion in the dust filter system of a lime kiln at the steel mill led to an increase in pressure, causing the blast.

CNN announced Wednesday the network will be ending Kathy Griffin's hosting duties for its New Year's Eve program after the comedian's disturbing photo shoot with a bloodied Trump mask.

Griffin has co-hosted CNN's "New Year's Eve Live" with Anderson Cooper since 2007. Cooper criticized Griffin's actions as "disgusting."

"For the record, I am appalled by the photo shoot Kathy Griffin took part in. It is clearly disgusting and completely," Cooper wrote Tuesday on Twitter. Fellow anchor Jake Tapper also condemned the image.

Donald Trump Jr. called for the network to drop Griffin as a commentator shortly after the image went viral. "Dear CNN, I must have missed your statement banning your commentator #KathyGriffin from future shows. Please resend. Thx," he tweeted.

Both the president and first lady also called the photos "disturbing," Trump adding that the photo took a toll on his youngest son, Barron.

Griffin received major backlash after a photo was published on Tuesday of her holding a bloodied mask that resembled President Donald Trump. She apologized for the photo shoot and YouTube video later, acknowledging she "went too far." However, by Wednesday morning, her attempt at a joke clearly fell flat among the public.

Squatty Potty, which designs bathroom products, announced Wednesday that its partnership with Griffin will also terminate, less than a month after it launched.

"We were shocked and disappointed to learn about the image Ms. Griffin shared today, it was deeply inappropriate and runs contrary to the core values our company stands for," CEO Bobby Edwards wrote in a statement sent to Fox News.

A massive explosion rocked a highly secure diplomatic area of Kabul during rush hour on Wednesday morning, killing at least 80 and injuring 350.

Authorities said the blast-- believed caused by a suicide car bombing--was so heavy that more than 30 vehicles were either destroyed or damaged at the site of the attack. "

We don't know at this moment what was the target of the attack, but most of the casualties are civilians," said Najib Danish, deputy spokesman for the Interior Ministry.

Germany’s Foreign Minister Signmar Gabriel said employees of the German Embassy in Kabul were wounded and an Afghan security guard was killed. The Foreign Ministry activated a crisis team to help deal with the aftermath

Rights activists in Hong Kong said they will press ahead with mass public events commemorating the military crackdown on the 1989 pro-democracy movement in Beijing in spite of growing political influence from the ruling Chinese Communist Party in the city.

"For as long as the authorities refuse to overturn the official verdict on June 4, 1989, our work will remain unfinished," Richard Choi, deputy chairman of the Alliance in Support of the Patriotic Democratic Movement in China, which organizes an annual march and candlelight vigil on the anniversary of the massacre, told reporters.

He called on Hong Kong citizens to take to the streets to make clear their dissatisfaction over Beijing's authoritarian style of government, dismissing concerns that the events have lost the support of the younger generation.

"We are still seeing a lot of young people turning out for June 4 events, whether as part of another organization or not," he said. "And various student groups have held their own memorial activities in various forms over the past two or three years."

"I think the younger generation do still care about June 4," he said.

Hong Kong was promised the continuation of its traditional freedoms of speech and association by a mini-constitution drafted by U.K. and Chinese officials ahead of the 1997 handover to Chinese rule.

But many say those freedoms are rapidly being eroded, and recent charges against peaceful demonstrators have sparked fears of a politicized "purge" aimed at discouraging further popular protests.

Vigil to greet Xi Jinping

Alliance leader Lee Cheuk-yan said the candlelight vigil is also a chance to show public anger at Beijing ahead of the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's handover to Chinese rule.

"Nobody is happy with this regime, so they should come to the candlelight vigil as a way of showing our displeasure to President Xi Jinping," he said.

Xi is likely to visit Hong Kong for lavish official ceremonies marking the July 1 handover, and activists have accused the Hong Kong authorities of rounding up prominent figures in the city's own 2014 democracy movement and charging them with public order offenses ahead of his visit.

Nine activists, academics and lawyers, including the three founders of the Occupy Central movement face criminal charges in a trial scheduled for June 15.

"We won't estimate how many will come to the vigil in advance, but we don't believe that people have cooled on this issue: they still care a lot," he said.

Hundreds of rights activists marched in Hong Kong on Sunday ahead of the 28th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre that put an end to weeks of peaceful protest around the country and saw the downfall of then premier Zhao Ziyang and a nationwide political crackdown on participants.

Carrying banners calling on Beijing to overturn the official verdict of "counterrevolutionary rebellion" on the movement, the activists marched to the Communist Party's liaison office in the city, scuffling briefly with police before posting a letter at the gates.

But local media said turnout was at its lowest since 2008, with few students joining the march, possibly because of a lack of interest in mainland China.

Thousands to rally

While organizers said around 1,000 people joined the march, police said the crowd numbered around 450.

Organizer Richard Choi said campaigners are now gearing up for a crowd of thousands at the city's annual candlelight vigil for the victims of the bloodshed.

"The Alliance's attitude is basically that we will continue to organize this event regardless of how many people show up," Choi told reporters following suggestions that support for the event is waning as Beijing extends its political influence in the former British colony.

"But I think the people of Hong Kong know that the most important thing is that we send out a strong and public message to China's leadership that we want them to overturn the verdict on June 4, 1989, especially as President Xi Jinping gets ready to visit Hong Kong [for the 20th anniversary of the city's handover to China on July 1]."

"We want them to know that the people of Hong Kong will not forget June 4, and also that we will continue to fight for our own freedom," he said.

The Occupy Central, or Umbrella, Movement for fully democratic elections rejected Beijing's insistence that any move to universal suffrage in the city must include the vetting of candidates by its supporters, and called for "real universal suffrage."

At its height, hundreds of thousands of people poured onto the city's streets in protest, using umbrellas to protect themselves from sun, rain, and pepper spray, and giving the Umbrella Movement its nickname.

But the movement ended with no political victory, and amid accusations from Beijing that the protests were being orchestrated by "hostile foreign forces" behind the scenes.

The Pentagon on Tuesday successfully shot down an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in a first-time test that cost nearly $250 million and helps prepare the Department of Defense (DOD) for a growing threat from North Korea.

The DOD’s Missile Defense Agency (MDA) shot an interceptor from the ground-based midcourse defense system (GMD) — a network meant to protect the country against a limited nuclear attack — at a target missile with a mock warhead meant to simulate an ICBM.

The target missile launched from Reagan Test Site Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific — nearly 5,000 miles from Los Angeles — and the interceptor was fired from an underground silo at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The intercept took place over the Pacific Ocean, according to a Pentagon statement.

There's a sucker born every minute, goes the old saying, and several hundred of them gathered at Wellesley College last Thursday to cheer Hillary Clinton as she rehashed, complained about and justified her electoral loss by saying in different ways over and over that she is simply too good for this world. Seriously, just how addled does one have to be to take this nepot and parasite as an inspiration for women, and as a model of how one should build her career?

To follow Clinton's career path, one has to first attack then-Sen. Edward Brooke, R-Mass., at your graduation from Wellesley. Second, proceed to Yale Law School to meet and marry a skilled politician. Third, follow him home to suppress bimbo eruptions and otherwise serve as first lady of Arkansas. And fourth, wait for the day he's elected as president, so that you are first lady for real.

May is traditionally a month of delight and expectation. Summer is drawing near, the school year will end soon, pools begin to open, maybe a beach trip is planned. I look forward to all of that. But, for me and my family, an underlying twinge of pain, sadness and loss invades our hope and anticipation of an otherwise joyful month.

On May 14, 2007, my world flipped upside down. My husband, Army Major Larry Bauguess, was serving in his dream job, deployed to Afghanistan, as an operations officer in the 82nd Airborne Division. Larry was a warrior and a gentleman and, true to his roots, he was participating in a peace meeting in Pakistan.

By all accounts, the historic meeting was successful. The Afghani, Pakistani and U.S. leadership had reached an agreement. The leaders from all three sides shook hands, exchanged coins and posed for pictures. A short while later, a uniformed Pakistani Frontier Guardsman, who had the mission to provide security for our troops, instead raised his rifle, took aim and opened fire. Larry stood between the shooter and his men. On his feet, he protected his men and took the brunt of the assault.

Our tiny daughters Ryann and Ellie and I were in our home at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, when the notification team came to deliver the heartbreaking news. The sound of the doorbell startled me. I remember walking to the door on that beautiful May afternoon expecting to see a little one on our front porch wanting to play with my girls. When I looked through the peephole, I saw something entirely different.

Through the tiny glass tunnel, I saw a man dressed in army greens. As I pushed away from the door, blood rushed to my face and a cold chill raced up my spine. When you’ve been in and around the Army for as long as we have, you know what it means when a man dressed in an army-green suit with a chest full of ribbons comes to your house during a time of war.

Since that day, my daughters and I have had quite a journey of heartache and pain, but we have had joyful moments, too. We work very hard to strike a balance. We lean on our faith. We follow Larry’s example.

We miss him. Every. Single. Day. We feel his void in everything we do, even 10 years later. But, we have chosen to drive on in a manner that, we hope, has honored him. If we didn’t do that, if we had quit, if we had given up on life or felt sorry for ourselves even for a minute, Larry Bauguess would come down here and say, “I didn’t give my life so you could stop living yours.” He would tell us to drive on. He would say, “Live your life. The best way to honor me is to get back out there and continue to live.”

I know he would say that to me, and I would say the exact same thing to him. So, we drive on. We live our lives, and we live in a way that we hope brings honor to him.

So, this Memorial Day, enjoy the pool. Enjoy the beach trip. Relish in the fact that the school year is almost over and summer is right around the corner. But, please, remember those intrepid Americans who, for decades and decades, have given that last full measure of devotion. Remember those who have given their lives to provide the blanket of freedom that allows us to live free. Never forget their sacrifice. Pray for the families left behind. And always remember that, though it absolutely is worth fighting for, freedom isn’t free.

The US Navy has reportedly ordered a third nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to join the San Diego-based USS Carl Vinson off North Korea amid increasing tensions.

Sources told news outlet the Voice of America that the USS Nimitz, which has scope to carry 90 aircraft, would join the Vinson and the USS Ronald Reagan in the volatile region.

The Times of San Diego reported that the navy rarely deploys three aircraft carriers to the same region.

The decision comes as North Korea has stepped up missile testing and vowed to develop weapons that can strike the United States.

Two sources told TheDC that the development is due to the behind-the-scenes efforts of Republican Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Democratic New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez and Republican Florida Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart.

In her Opening Statement, Judge Jeanine Pirro said federal authorities must identify the "traitorous" leaker inside the Trump White House.

Pirro said that the yet-unknown person giving secretive information to the press is "an enemy of the United States."

She said the leaker is doing "enormous damage" to both President Trump and the country.

"There is a leaker in the White House. There is a traitor in the people's house - a traitor who must be taken out," Pirro said.

WASHINGTON – Ousted FBI Director James Comey must be held accountable for creating a presidential election frenzy over “fake” intelligence, one top Republican senator said Sunday.

“If he intervened in the election based on fake information generated by the Russians, that was an incredibly incompetent thing to do,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) told CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“This is a huge deal,” Graham said of new reporting that Comey hijacked the Department of Justice investigation based on fake Russian intelligence.

“That, to me, is a stunning story,” Graham continued. “From Congress’ point of view, he never told us it was fake, so he needs to be held accountable.”

Imagine this for a moment – your child is dead. This person that you have raised from birth and have focused every important thought of your life for over two decades is gone from the world forever. Because despite your efforts, your attention, and your devotion, you could not stop the fateful call of the heroin that ended your child’s life. And destroyed yours.

The deadly poison that is heroin made its way to your small town from Mexico, where it was grown and processed, later to be trafficked to your neighborhood where its target customers were someone’s children, parents, brothers and sisters.

But right now, when you open the newspaper or turn on the television, you learn that the person that brought the drugs into your neighborhood, which ultimately made their way to your child, is considered by many in both the media and the public to be a “non-violent, low-level drug offender.” In fact, the last presidential administration decided that it would treat these so-called “non-violent, low-level drug offenders” with leniency to help them avoid potentially long prison sentences required by law.

Yet it goes beyond this. Everywhere you look on the subject, you see another editorial, documentary, or pundit talking about the tragedy of the convicted “non-violent, low-level drug offender” who has been separated by his family because he is serving a long sentence in prison.

You are both hurt and confused by this. You wonder why the drug trafficker arrested and convicted for dealing over 20,000 doses of black heroin is considered a non-violent, low-level drug offender. After all, those 20,000 doses can do so much damage to a small community like yours. They can create new heroin addicts, further the dark spiral of existing heroin addicts, and take the final breath from people like your child.

And the heroin that your child used violently ripped the very life of your child away, then, with equal violence, utterly destroyed the entire purpose of your own life, turning it into a nightmare from which you can never wake up. So you are angry, and you should be, that the focus and sympathy and newspaper profile is on that of the convicted drug trafficker serving a ten-year sentence, while your child received nothing more than an obituary in your small town paper and has now been relegated to a mere statistic as one of the 52,000 overdose deaths that ravaged our country.

There is nothing that anyone will be able to do to bring your child back. However, you are heartened by the fact that this administration, like every administration before 2013, is not going to turn its back on the victims and is going to enforce the law as written, despite the mainstream media’s push to victimize the victimizers. Under President Trump and Attorney General Sessions, the Department of Justice is going to charge major drug traffickers based on the exceedingly large amounts of deadly poison they are peddling in our neighborhoods. These drug traffickers will no longer be treated with kid gloves – they will be treated like the merchants of death that they are.

Of course, that is not to say you are without sympathy for the parents who, through no fault of their own, has to see their child in prison for ten years. But more than sympathy, you are envious. Because despite their child’s disastrously wrong choices, they will be able to welcome him home one day. You will never have the same opportunity.

New revelations have surfaced that the Obama administration abused intelligence during the election by launching a massive domestic-spy campaign that included snooping on Trump officials.

The irony is mind-boggling: Targeting political opposition is long a technique of police states like Russia, which Team Obama has loudly condemned for allegedly using its own intelligence agencies to hack into our election.

The revelations, as well as testimony this week from former Obama intel officials, show the extent to which the Obama administration politicized and weaponized intelligence against Americans.

Thanks to Circa News, we now know the National Security Agency under President Barack Obama routinely violated privacy protections while snooping through foreign intercepts involving US citizens — and failed to disclose the breaches, prompting the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court a month before the election to rebuke administration officials.

COLOMBO: India on Saturday rushed relief materials and deployed rescue personnel in Sri Lanka as the country faced its worst floods since 2003 that claimed the lives of nearly 120 people and displaced half a million.

The Disaster Management Centre issued an urgent evacuation warning for residents living along the Kelani River and within the divisional secretariats of Kollonnawa, Kaduwela, Wellampitiya, Kelaniya, Biyagama, Sedawatte, Dompe, Hanwella, Padukka and Avissawella.

Nearly half a million people have been displaced due to the flood and earth slips, Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said, adding 119 people have died so far while over 150 are missing.

"A total of 493,455 people are now housed in 185 relief camps and health care facilities are being provided to them," Senatatne said.

Trump and Leaks: The president must take aggressive steps to stop a grave national security threat

President Trump spoke out angrily Thursday against leaks of classified information to the press – including leaks of confidential information the U.K. government had shared with American intelligence agencies on the Manchester terrorist attack. These leaks “pose a grave threat to our national security,” he said, and pledged to identify and prosecute those responsible.

The president has it exactly right. He is facing an unprecedented campaign by career government employees to sabotage his presidency with a flood of leaks to the press of classified and confidential information. These leaks are damaging U.S. national security and constitute criminal behavior. They must be stopped.

Some of the leaks have been of highly classified U.S. intelligence reports, including "demasked" NSA reporting concerning former National Security Adviser General Michael Flynn. Others were of President Trump's confidential conversations with foreign leaders.

Concerning the false allegation that President Trump "leaked" classified information to Russian officials when he met with them in the Oval Office, bear in mind that the president has ultimate classification authority -- he can disclose intelligence as he sees fit to advance his foreign policy.

These leaks are especially serious since Justice and law enforcement careerists are violating the due process rights of Trump officials by disclosing confidential information from official investigations to smear them.

As I discussed in an earlier Fox News Opinion article, the real scandal in that instance was that current and former intelligence and policy officials disclosed to the Washington Post sensitive details about the intelligence Trump allegedly discussed with Russian officials – details that were so highly classified the Post chose not to publish them. This was the real crime. The persons who illegally disclosed this information to the Post must be prosecuted.

Just as serious are the constant leaks concerning investigations of Trump officials. There's no question in my mind that former FBI Director James Comey arranged to have his notes leaked to the press to hurt President Trump and influence the congressional investigations of Russian interference in the 2016 election. It also appears that anti-Trump government employees with the Justice Department and the FBI are systematically leaking a story a day to help CNN and MSNBC promote their false narratives that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to win the 2016 presidential election.

These leaks are especially serious since Justice and law enforcement careerists are violating the due process rights of Trump officials by disclosing (and probably misrepresenting) confidential information from official investigations to smear them. Since the “evidence” of wrongdoing by Trump officials appears too thin to produce any charges, these officials are instead using leaks to try and convict Trump officials in the press.

It is urgent that Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Special Counsel Robert Mueller stop these leaks which are an affront to the American system of justice.

The Trump administration also must take decisive action to halt leaks of classified national security information. The most effective way to do this is to fill vacant confirmable and non-confirmable positions in policy and intelligence agencies as quickly as possible.

This should include a housecleaning in the NSC, State, DOD, CIA, DIA, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and other agencies to replace career government employees named to sensitive positions by the Obama administration. In some cases, these career officials are actually former Obama political appointees who converted to the career civil service, a practice known as “burrowing in.”

Although civil service laws and regulations make it virtually impossible to fire career government employees, the Trump administration can reassign these officials. If this is not possible, job descriptions can be changed so anti-Trump careerists suspected of leaking no longer work on sensitive matters. Their security clearances can also be stripped.

Other immediate steps must be taken to address recent leaks of classified and confidential information. Read-outs of the president’s meetings and conversations must be better protected. Investigations that include polygraphs should be conducted to find those who were behind recent leaks. And the NSC needs to bring in experienced personnel to help safeguard confidential information concerning the president’s policy deliberations.

Trump officials will never completely stop leaks to the press. They need to recognize that leaks are always worse during Republican presidencies because the career work force tilts to the left. That said, this recent flood of leaks is an unprecedented effort by government careerists to put U.S. national security at risk to undermine an elected president. This cannot be allowed to continue.

AUSTRALIA is set to play a greater role in Donald Trump’s Asia-Pacific plan in a bid to combat China’s behaviour in the South China Sea.

In an interview with The Australian, US Senator John McCain, who is chairman of the US Senate armed services committee, said that beefed up naval forces would be developed by the US and Australia to target “peace through strength” in the Pacific.

Sen. McCain, who is headed Down Under next week to meet with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, said Australia would play a bigger role under the new US strategy.

“The new (US) national security team ... are developing strategies for the Asia-Pacific region and I think that strategy will have a lot to do with our relationship and strategic co-operation with Australia,” he said. “I think Australia could play a key role particularly since we are witnessing a very large investment in an upgrade and expanded (US) navy in the decade ahead.

“That is an affirmation of ­Ronald Reagan’s commitment, which is peace through strength, and we see the Chinese asserting control in areas of the East China Sea and South China Sea that is clearly in violation of internat­ional law,” he said.

Mr Trump’s proposed 2018 budget called for an increase in military spending to $US574 billion, 10 per cent more than last year.

Sen McCain commended Mr Turnbull’s $89 billion proposal to replace and renew the Royal Australian Navy’s fleet.

“I think it’s very important that the Australian navy be improved, I applaud that decision ... and this is important for our alliance,” he said. “We do not see confrontation with China, nor do I believe there will be, but ... one of the fundamentals of US and Australia policy is freedom of navigation. With a big build-up of our capabilities we can ensure this fundamental principle is respected.”

An RQ-4 Global Hawk surveillance drone arrived at Yokota Air Base Monday night, starting a five-month operation in Tokyo, the U.S. base announced.

The U.S. Air Force’s Global Hawk drone is expected to survey ballistic missiles and nuclear facilities in North Korea, which have fueled political tensions over the past month.

The aircraft is part of the 69th Reconnaissance Group Detachment 1 and provides near real-time aerial imagery reconnaissance support to U.S. and partner nations, according to the base’s website.

Libya keeps popping up in the investigation into the attack by British suicide bomber Salman Abedi, who killed at least 22 people and injured 59 at an Ariana Grande concert Monday night. Abedi spent the last three weeks of his life in Libya, his father’s birthplace, before returning to his native Manchester.

As Britain’s security forces dig deeper into Abedi’s ISIS connections, making additional arrests in England and Libya, one thing is clear: The country we helped rid of dictator Moammar Khadafy is a mess — which is just how the Islamist terrorists like it.

Obama lived in an imaginary world, where America pretends it can ignore the messes left behind. It’s time to break out of that mindset while there’s still a chance to turn Libya around. First Trump must realize that the rear is no place for a leader.

MELANIA Trump has nailed her inaugural trip as First Lady with a string of hella cute outfits.

So far she’s been to Belgium, Israel, Italy and Saudi Arabia, where Melania decided not to wear a headscarf, something Donald Trump criticised Michelle Obama for doing in 2015.

She’s been channelling her inner Business Barbie and rocking a series of fabulous two-piece suits, complete with giant belts cinched in at the waist.

It was clear she had adopted that golden rule of style — find a look you like and stick with it.

In Brussels, the suit was beige, while she went with white for a visit to the Western Wall in Jerusalem. She swapped the suit but kept with the theme with several belted coat dresses.
