Sometimes a piece of information comes along that you just know is something that can't possibly end well. And sometimes, these can be real head-scratchers. This is one such, an action that's so egregious that you have to wonder: Did nobody at all look at the national security aspect of all this?

And yet, here we are: A Chinese national, affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party, has purchased a building overlooking the White House, with line-of-sight, even. Oh, and he's a trained sniper. Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO) took to his X account with the news.

What to know

China’s recent test of a submarine-launched ballistic missile without adequate warning prompted the U.S. and 40 countries to demand greater advance notice of such tests, the State Department said in a joint statement.

The joint statement submitted to the U.N. Conference on Disarmament in Geneva by the 41 democratic nations noted recent missile testing in the Pacific — a reference to China’s July 6 flight test of a submarine-launched ballistic missile into the western Pacific.

“Recent missile testing activity in the Pacific area did not follow the standard practices adopted by most states to notify and deconflict [intercontinental ballistic missile], SLBM and [space launch vehicle] launches,” the multi-nation statement said.

“Conducting nuclear-capable ballistic missile tests without sufficient advance notice and detail is dangerous and disrupts the peace and security of relevant nations in proximity to these tests.”

China’s test of what is believed to be a nuclear-capable JL-2 or JL-3 missile from a submarine was carried out after what U.S. officials said was a few hours of warning time and without providing details on the planned launch or flight path.

The statement said failure to provide adequate notification of missile tests increases the danger of miscalculation, undermines global stability and security, and is “incompatible with the responsibilities that come with possessing long-range missile capabilities.”

The statement called on “relevant countries” to follow internationally accepted protocols for long-range missile and space launch vehicles.

A group of 145 nations takes part in the Hague Code of Conduct Against Ballistic Missile Proliferation. The voluntary code calls for all countries conducting long-range missile tests to announce a pre-launch time window, the type of missile to be fired and the location and direction of its flight.

Why Iran is so desperate to assassinate Donald Trump

In his September 2023 address to the United Nations General Assembly, the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi warned that “the blood of the oppressed will not be forgotten, and the ropes of the guilty will bring them to justice.”

Three years later, media attention is focused on President Donald Trump’s use of a catering truck to secretly switch planes before leaving last month’s NATO summit in Turkey. Trump did so on U.S. Secret Service advice amid an Iranian assassination threat.

Raisi’s rhetoric hints at why the threat to Trump isn’t going away. Indeed, as long as the Islamic Republic of Iran exists, it will aggressively seek Trump’s premature demise. It doesn’t matter whether it’s now, a year from now, or ten years from now, Iran desperately wants Trump dead. The rationale for this murderous fixation finds its root at a unique intersection of vengeance and theologically vested history.

Let’s start with the history. The Iranian regime adopts a Khomeinist interpretation of Twelver Shia theology. This ideology places extreme emphasis on valiant resistance against more powerful, unjust, and oppressive foes. It means lionizing those who give their lives as martyrs to this cause. Most notably, Husayn ibn Ali’s death against an Umayyad force at the 7th-century Battle of Karbala.

That brings us back to Trump. After all, Trump has done more to offend the Iranian regime’s ideology than anyone in history.

First, there was Trump’s January 2020 order to kill Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Gen. Qassem Soleimani. Soleimani was responsible for killing hundreds of Americans and wounding thousands more in Iraq. Many were struck with brutal, explosively-formed penetrators which turned their armored vehicles into shrapnel centrifuges. Soleimani masterminded numerous other devastating attacks against the U.S., including a 2011 effort to blow up Washington, D.C.’s Cafe Milano restaurant.

But while his death was due, Soleimani was also a prized partner of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He was regarded by the regime as the finest living proof of Iran’s destiny to reign over the Middle East. His loss struck Iran a severe theological and strategic blow.

Khamenei’s response was rapid. He directed the Guard and his Ministry of Intelligence to develop plans to kill Trump and top officials in his first administration. Others on the target list included, as first reported by the Washington Examiner, former national security advisor John Bolton and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. This led to extensive (and expensive) security details being provided to them and other officials, though Trump later revoked them. Iran subsequently pursued numerous assassination plots against Trump and others.

Then came this year’s war on Iran and the Feb. 28 killing of Khamenei himself.

As supreme leader, Khamenei was regarded by regime ideologues as God’s ordained and most important human servant. They saw him as the ultimate custodian of Islamic justice, a caretaker awaiting the return of the Mahdi (a servant of the Prophet Muhammad, who they believe is currently in physical hiding). By eliminating Khamenei, Trump thus transformed himself from a mortal enemy of the regime to the Iranian equivalent of the Antichrist. Iran believes its holy justice must be purified in the president’s blood and that of his family.

FEARING ANTI-WAR ELECTION EMBARRASSMENT, RUSSIA BANS ONLY OPPOSITION PARTY

Whether more directly or through organized crime groups, then, the Islamic Republic is going to keep trying to assassinate Trump. Nothing but the demise of the regime or Trump will change this.

Trump may see himself as a leader uniquely able to move a foreign policy relationship from animus to accord. He may often be right in that regard. But Iran sees his fate as sealed. No offers of diplomacy or new military threats will alter this understanding in Tehran. Hence why Trump is receiving such extensive Secret Service precautionary measures, and why these measures will extend long into the future.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Newsmax's "Rob Schmitt Tonight" on Thursday that President Donald Trump inherited an economic "mess" but has engineered an economic turnaround that's "working."

Bessent told host Rob Schmitt that Trump's policies are already delivering lower inflation and improving purchasing power for American workers — a recovery he portrayed as remarkable given the damage he said the administration inherited.

Bessent's interview came as new federal data showed prescription drug costs saw their biggest decline in 60 years after Trump made lowering prices a national priority.

Bessent said Americans have legitimate reasons to remain frustrated after years of elevated prices.

"People should be upset," Bessent said, arguing the Biden years left households facing a substantial loss of purchasing power, with working Americans hit especially hard by higher costs for automobiles, insurance, and rent.

But Bessent said Trump's policies are working.

A senior Chinese Communist Party (CCP) intelligence official is the new owner of a historic building overlooking the White House Complex, a Daily Caller News Foundation investigation discovered.

Located approximately 650 feet northeast of the White House grounds, the 100-year-old Securities Building on 15th Street was purchased on July 21, 2026 for $8.4 million by the Philip Qiu and Family Foundation, filings show. The building’s new owner, Philip Qiu, has held numerous positions within Chinese intelligence and state security arms, according to university records and DCNF translations of Chinese government announcements.

Qiu did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

“The CCP is like a kind, but firm parent,” Qiu said in 2021, according to a DCNF translation of an announcement from a Chinese intel arm. “It has guided our people out of hardship, led China’s sons and daughters to build a new country and is steering us toward great national rejuvenation.”

The State Department on Thursday called a joint Chinese naval maneuver with an Indonesian warship in waters east of Taiwan a destabilizing act, while Taipei denounced the maneuver as “dangerous.”

“The United States urges Beijing to cease its continuous military pressure against Taiwan and instead engage in meaningful dialogue with Taiwan,” a State Department spokesman said.

“We call on other countries to encourage the peaceful resolution of cross-Strait issues instead of amplifying Beijing’s destabilizing narratives,” the spokesman told The Washington Times in response to the joint Chinese-Indonesian naval drill Wednesday.

The Chinese Defense Ministry said the exercise was conducted about 70 to 80 nautical miles east of Taiwan. State media said the “navigation exercise” involved two frigates.

Indonesia’s navy said the maneuver was a simple passing exercise involving two warships that coordinated a nearby transit.

In Taipei, the government’s Mainland Affairs Council called the exercise a military provocation and said in a statement that China should “immediately stop this dangerous behavior that undermines the status quo.”

The council said the exercise followed other troubling Chinese actions, including Beijing’s claims of routine “law enforcement patrols” in waters east of Taiwan. 

The Chinese military is now doing military drills with “relevant countries,” the statement said.

Forty-eight missing children from Massachusetts have been rescued during a multi-agency operation tied to the FIFA World Cup, the U.S. Marshals Service said on Aug. 10 as it announced the conclusion of the operation.

Massachusetts hosted seven matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup from June to July. In the months leading up to and including the tournament, local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies strengthened security measures to ensure the safety of the nation and soccer fans from all around the world.

They also launched “Operation Yellow Card,” a collaborative effort to recover children reported missing within and from Massachusetts. It aimed to locate missing children at risk of human trafficking, commercial sexual exploitation, violence, and other forms of victimization during the competition.

Authorities anticipated an influx of international visitors to the Boston metropolitan area for the tournament, when large crowds can increase the risk of trafficking and child exploitation.

The Justice Department (DOJ) said on July 20 that it was investigating whether Harvard University violated Title VI by excluding American students from financial aid programs funded by China-based sources.

The DOJ announced that Harvard’s foreign funding disclosures raised concerns about its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on national origin.

Universities are required by federal law to report gifts and contracts from foreign sources that exceed $250,000 in a year. Harvard had disclosed nearly $4.5 billion in foreign funding, of which $630 million came from sources based in China—the university’s largest source of foreign funding—the department said.

According to the DOJ, Harvard appears to accept funds from China-based sources that require the university to establish financial aid programs “with preference given to students from particular countries.”

The European Union should use all available leverage, including visa and trade policy, to ensure that Morocco cooperates on migration to the continent, following the recent illegal immigrant surge at Ceuta, EU Migration ‌Commissioner Magnus Brunner said on Aug. 6.

All the noise around Iran’s supposed stranglehold on oil supplies transiting through the Strait of Hormuz is missing the point.

The reality is that the combination of Operations Midnight Hammer and Epic Fury upended the regime’s hopes of turning Hormuz into a permanent hostage.

Its ruling clerics will now pay the price for activating a blockade without their most important insurance cards — perhaps sooner than they think.

On the eve of Independence Day, Pastor Ezra Jin Mingri landed in Los Angeles, free after roughly nine months in Chinese prison.

During his detainment, Jin had wondered if he would ever see freedom again. His release came only after President Donald Trump raised the case directly with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in May. At least eight members of Jin’s church remain behind bars.

Although Jin is a Christian pastor, he wasn’t accused of a crime of a religious nature. Instead, the Chinese regime charged him with illegally using information networks and running an illegal business—internet and commercial offenses.

Two Republican senators on Aug. 10 released text messages from Dr. Anthony Fauci’s government-issued cellphone that showed him discussing potential COVID-19 vaccine risks for pregnant women.

The messages, released by Sens. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.), date to January 2021, when Fauci headed the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). They were among more than 34,000 messages obtained from the device.

The exchange was between Fauci, then-Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky, and Dr. Vivek Murthy, who served as surgeon general during the Biden administration.

Murthy asked in a Jan. 25, 2021, text whether there was “any data or theoretical reason” for preferring COVID-19 vaccination earlier or later in pregnancy, and when more robust data on vaccine risks for pregnant women would be available.

Commentary 

In celebration of the PLA Army Day, Chinese state media honored naval test pilot Yang Yong, who recently received a rare First-Class National Defense Science and Technology Merit Award. However, by revealing unusual details about Yang’s flight testing, the media unintentionally exposed the experimental nature of much of China’s carrier aviation program.

On July 31, one day before the PLA Army Day, Xinhua briefly announced that Yang, a test pilot with PLA Unit 91548, had received the prestigious award, but did not explain why.

However, in a different TV episode, CCTV revealed that Yang participated in flight testing aboard the aircraft carrier Fujian, including electromagnetic catapult launches of the KJ-600 carrier-based airborne early warning aircraft. CCTV soon released another feature explaining the dangerous missions that...

Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., endorsed Sen. Darline Graham on Wednesday ahead of South Carolina's Republican Senate runoff, throwing his support behind her after she finished first in Tuesday's crowded special primary.

"If I were going to endorse in the South Carolina GOP Senate primary, I wanted to do so with confidence," Scott wrote in a post on X.

"After watching Darline Graham in the Senate and on the campaign trail, I'm confident she's the real deal. Her first-place finish last night was remarkable, but not surprising," he continued.

"She is a conservative stalwart, a hard worker, and represents our beloved state with class, humility, and dignity. I know she is making her brother proud, but Darline has already proven to be her own person: focused on pocketbook issues, defending our South Carolina values, and delivering for the people she represents," Scott added.

"Her priorities are our priorities. I voted for Darline in yesterday's primary, and I'll vote for her again in the runoff," he wrote.

"I'm proud to endorse Darline Graham for the U.S. Senate, and I encourage South Carolina Republicans across our state to join me in voting for her in the runoff."

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, whom President Donald Trump described as "one of my most trusted aides," will step down at the end of the month to spend more time with her family, Trump announced Wednesday.

Bill Gates’ “nepo baby” daughter Phoebe Gates, 23, has been accused of “cookie stuffing” at her multibillion-dollar startup, Phia – an illicit practice that comes with a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison, according to reports.

Phia – a digital personal shopping assistant co-founded by Gates with fellow Stanford alum Sophia Kianni – reacted with shock in July following reports that it was dropping more web “cookies” than it should, taking undue credit for online sales at retail partners.

The company released a statement that it had only learned of the issue “within the last 24 hours,” pledging to fix the glitch – but according to a new Bloomberg report, the young entrepreneurs had known for at least seven months that their startup was overcounting its sales commissions.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said "no exchange took place" to earn the release of American Robert Gilman from a Russian prison.

Trump announced on Truth Social that Gilman, a former U.S. Marine imprisoned in Russia since 2022, was returning home following the president's discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Russia has agreed to release him, very much on a Humanitarian Basis," Trump wrote. "We appreciate this decision, and the fact that Russia asked for no one in return — No exchange took place."

* Sen. Darline Graham won the Republican primary for her late brother's Senate seat.
* She received 33% of the vote, leading Rep. Ralph Norman's 24%.
* Graham faces Norman in a runoff election in two weeks.

Sen. Darline Graham, the sister of the late Lindsey Graham, placed first in the Republican primary to fill the powerful senator’s seat for a six-year term after his unexpected death.

Because she did not win an outright majority, though, despite President Trump’s support, Tuesday night’s result sets up another battle for the political novice in two weeks’ time.

Ms. Graham now faces Rep. Ralph Norman, a hardline conservative who has spent a decade on Capitol Hill, making a name for himself as a fiscal hawk.

After the first-place finish, Ms. Graham thanked the president for his support.

“He knows that I will stand with him and fight for his agenda just like Lindsey did,” she said.

Mr. Norman also claimed vindication in a statement, saying that he is the “proven conservative” in all capital letters for emphasis.

“Tonight, voters made it clear they want a proven conservative with a record of getting the job done on the ballot for the U.S. Senate, and as we advance to the runoff, that’s exactly what I’ll give them,” he said.

The special primary election gave Mr. Norman, who fell short in the June Republican gubernatorial primary, a chance to extend his career on Capitol Hill.

A Chinese national who tried to buy military-grade satellite modems and radios for shipment to China has pleaded guilty in federal court in Salt Lake City. 

Chen Dingwei, 29, pleaded guilty on Aug. 10 to violating the Arms Export Control Act. He was accused of working with co-conspirators to attempt to buy restricted items on the U.S. Munitions List without obtaining a license or approval from the Department of State’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls.

“Chen tried to divert sensitive U.S. military technologies to the People’s Republic of China, technologies the PRC could have used against us in the future,” John Eisenberg, assistant attorney general for national security, said in a statement.

“These advanced technologies are a product of United States ingenuity and investment, and the National Security Division will act together with our partners across the government to enforce our laws to protect the military ...

Crowds are celebrating outside in the streets of Damascus after former Syrian dictator Bashar Assad and his brother were sentenced to death in absentia by the Fourth Criminal Court on Tuesday.

He was accused of committing atrocities on his own people during Syria’s 14-year civil war that left an estimated half a million people dead. He was overthrown in 2024 by the rebel Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, which now runs the country, and other organizations like the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army. Assad and his brother promptly fled to Russia, a country that knows a thing or two about brutal dictators.

"Bashar Assad used state agencies to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity," said Judge Fakhareddine al-Aryan during a televised court session.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Two former Chinese military service members were arrested in South Korea for alleged espionage, accused of acts including intercepting communications between fighter jets and ground control and collecting information on movements of US armaments, police said Tuesday.

Police said that one of the suspects, a Chinese national in his 60s, set up an interception device consisting of a software-defined radio receiver, an antenna and a laptop at a hotel near an air base jointly used by South Korean and US air forces in southern South Korea.

Police said the man is accused of intercepting communications between fighter jets flown by South Korean and US pilots and air traffic controllers at the base several times since 2024.

On May 16, 2017, the FBI took one of the most extraordinary steps in its history: It opened a full investigation of the sitting American president.

 Newly declassified documents released by the White House say the bureau asked whether the president “is or was directed by, controlled by, and/or coordinated activities with” Vladimir Putin’s Russia — and whether he “obstructed and/or conspired to obstruct” the FBI’s own investigation.

That the FBI had targeted President Trump was reported in 2019. What was missing was the paperwork — the opening document, the names on it, the chain of command.

The May 16 “opening communication” lists FBI General Counsel James Baker and Counterintelligence Division Assistant Director E.W. “Bill” Priestap as the approving officials. 

The investigation was opened at Priestap’s direction, in consultation with Baker’s Office of General Counsel; and Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe personally notified Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

The next day — May 17 — Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller special counsel, and the Russia, Russia, Russia hoax took flight.

Hong Kong Drops to Lowest Category in Press Freedom Rankings

According to RSF, before 2014 journalists in Hong Kong were safe, but in recent years they have been arrested and subjected to police violence.

An annual index of press freedom has for the first time placed Hong Kong alongside mainland China in its worst “very serious” category. 

Hong Kong scored 39.86 out of 100—the lowest score for the former British colony on record—in the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) 2025 World Press Freedom Index. 

Published on May 2, the index shows that Hong Kong’s score now sees it ranked 140th out of 180 countries and regions, down five places from last year, returning to its ranking in 2023 but scoring five points lower, which has pushed it from the “difficult” category into the “very serious” category for its freedom of press situation.

RSF pointed out that at the judicial level, since the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) forced the implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law (NSL) in 2020 to suppress independent voices, Hong Kong’s press freedom has ...

In the spirit of "workers of the world, unite!" a slogan from "The Communist Manifesto," written by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) claims to represent the working class. 

The DSA describes itself as an organization "of, by, and for the working class" and frames its mission around uniting and empowering workers against the capitalist or ruling class.

It goes on to state on its website that "We believe that working people should run both the economy and society democratically to meet human needs, not to make profits for a few."

But America's blue collar workers aren't that stupid, and the DSA's membership should be the first clue.

Commentary

Beijing is using clubs and water cannons to take Philippine territory while gaslighting the country through propagandistic cultural, academic, political, and media campaigns. But Manila is wise to the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP’s) subversion of Philippine democracy and increasingly pushes back.

Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. is at the tip of this particular spear. He recently called on pro-CCP politicians in the Philippines to resign. He denounced a video released by Chinese state media that depicts the Philippines as a monkey. And the Defense Department is scrutinizing CCP-backed academic and cultural “exchange” programs in the Philippines that have come under investigation by a Stanford University initiative.

Australian Shipbuilder Gets $1.7 Billion Offer for US Operations

Australia’s biggest shipbuilder is considering selling off its lucrative U.S. operations, after getting an offer of up to $1.7 billion from a South Korean multinational.

Hanwha lobbed a tentative US$1.05 billion to US$1.2 billion (A$1.5 billion to A$1.7 billion) offer for Austal’s U.S. business, which is equivalent to more than three-quarters of the shipbuilder’s 2025 revenue of $1.8 billion.

Austal’s board has told shareholders the proposal deserves further evaluation and has approved the defence and renewable energy-focused group to Hanwha to conduct due diligence on Austal USA.

Given the U.S. location, the potential takeover won’t face Australian Foreign Investment Review Board scrutiny.
