Iran just sentenced four protesters to death. Why hasn’t Pope Leo criticized Iran?

One might never know it by the rhetoric of Pope Leo XIV, but the Islamic theocracy that rules over Iran is a brutal regime.
The country is regularly linked to terrorist paramilitary organizations wreaking havoc and causing enormous amounts of violence, destruction, and suffering to innocent people throughout the Middle East. Despite such horrific acts, Pope Leo seems more concerned with disparaging and criticizing President Donald Trump for standing up to this rogue, theocratic, and totalitarian government than vociferously condemning Iran for committing such atrocities.

History will debate the Iran conflict for decades, but from my perspective, President Donald Trump has already "won" the war and done so decisively.
Let's not forget what this war was all about.
For decades, Iran had promised to build and use one or more nuclear devices to wipe Israel off the map, not to mention to destroy the "Great Satan" — America.
Just before the war, the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency reported Tehran was just weeks away from weaponized plutonium.
With such plutonium, an atomic bomb could be constructed in short order.
The first and most central objective of the war, as articulated by Trump, his advisers, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was to stop Iran from building such a weapon and to destroy its nuclear program.
By all accounts, that goal was accomplished with remarkable speed.
Within roughly 10 days of sustained strikes, the U.S. and Israel struck the key enrichment facilities, research sites, and command structures — all tied to nuclear development.
U.S. officials said Iran's weapons program was likely set back decades.

Let's not forget what this war was all about.

NEW YORK — Chinese authorities are increasing pressure on underground Catholic communities to join the state-controlled official church while tightening surveillance and travel restrictions on all of China’s estimated 12 million Catholics, a rights group said Wednesday.
The detailed report from Human Rights Watch said the heightened pressure was part of a decade-old campaign to ensure that religious denominations and independent churches are loyal to the officially atheist Communist Party.
China’s Catholics have been divided between an official, state-controlled church that didn’t recognize papal authority and an underground church that remained loyal to Rome through decades of persecution.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas gave a speech at the University of Texas at Austin on Wednesday to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
It was a powerful tribute to the founding principles of our country and a damning indictment of the dangers of progressivism to those ideals. He called out the "cynicism, rejection, hostility, and animus" towards those ideals.
Thomas started by explaining how, even as a child, at home, at church, and at school (a Catholic school), he was taught that we were all equal and that our rights came from God. Therefore, they could not be denied by man, even as some were trying to deny them those rights. "It was beyond the power of man to alter," he explained. "Others could treat us as unequal," he said, "But they lacked the divine power to make us so." These rights transcended governmental power or authority. "We knew that life, liberty, and property were sacrosanct. Those truths were self-evident to the adults in our lives and were taught to us as indelible, undeniable truths."
Thomas chided those who took those basic ideals of the Declaration and treated them as "esoteric philosophy." "They overcomplicate them, take the spirit out of them," he advised. They are not an abstract theory, but a "way of life" that you can learn from the people all around you.
That is the sense in which he knew the principles of the Declaration of Independence as a child, and that is "the only sense in which those principles can sustain our country," he declared. Despite our failings, it "gave us the freest, the wealthiest, and most powerful nation in the world."
Thomas reminded the audience of the bravery of those men who signed the Declaration, and risked their lives and liberty to take that stand. He read the last line, so people would not forget it, "And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor." "It was a supreme act of courage. Those principles were more important than their fear," Thomas said.
That is the most important part of the Declaration, he asserted.
That devotion has animated Americans ever since, Thomas said: "Think of how that devotion has carried us from Independence Hall to Flanders Field, and the beaches of Normandy." He spoke of the devotion of the Flight 93 passengers who fought back on 9/11 and that of his grandparents, who were determined that he be raised right. It was that willingness to take action that "has been most indispensable."
It was that devotion that we needed today, he warned, if this nation is to endure. Many in Washington spout high-minded words, but do not have the devotion to hold up the ideals. "They recast themselves as institutionalists, pragmatists or thoughtful moderates, all as a way of justifying their failures to themselves, their consciences, and their country," he said.
"None of our rights come from the government," he continued.
Having laid out the bedrock, he then warned what was threatening it and the dangers of "progressivism" that was opposed to the principles of the Declaration. "It is not possible for the two to co-exist forever," Thomas said.

"What changed the world was not the words, but the commitment and the spirit of the people who were willing to labor, sacrifice, and even give their lives, what Lincoln at Gettysburg called, 'The last full measure of devotion' for the Declaration's principles. When Americans look to Washington and wonder why it so often disappoints, it is not because there are too few people who know what is right. It is not because we lack the intellect, or the capacity, or the talent. It is instead because there are too few people who are willing to do what it takes to do the right thing, to sacrifice the popularity, flattery, comfort, and security that are the purchase price for principle. It is because too few of us reflect on, and reflect, the courage and commitment of that final sentence of the Declaration. And so many seem to have forgotten how much others have sacrificed so that this nation can exist and endure.
"None of our rights come from the government," he continued.
"All of the government's authority comes from our consent. And the structure and limited role of government is to assure that it does not exceed the authority to which we have consented or intrude on our natural rights. The Constitution is the means of government. It is the Declaration that announces the ends for government. The Constitution achieves its purpose by protecting our natural rights and our liberties from concentrated power and excessive democracy."

As he was leaving the White House for Las Vegas on Thursday afternoon, President Donald Trump told reporters that he is looking into the circumstances surrounding the death or disappearance of 10 U.S. scientists over the last three years.
Almost all of the scientists involved either worked directly for the U.S. government or on government-funded programs related to nuclear energy, aerospace, or UFOs, working at places like Los Alamos National Laboatory, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
Trump was asked by Fox News' Peter Doocy, "Based on what you've been briefed, do you think is happening here, and do you think that this is connected or totally random?"

President Donald Trump announced Thursday that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire after weeks of fighting along their shared border.
This is aimed at allowing for diplomatic discussion between the two nations. The truce is expected to start at 5 p.m. Eastern Time when Israel will temporarily halt its military offensive against Iran-backed terrorist group Hezbollah.
In posts on Truth Social, Trump said he “had excellent conversations with the Highly Respected President Joseph Aoun, of Lebanon, and Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, of Israel” and that “These two Leaders have agreed that in order to achieve PEACE between their Countries, they will formally begin a 10 Day CEASEFIRE at 5 P.M. EST.”
In another post, Trump announced he would invite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun to the White House to continue peace negotiations.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on April 15 that the United States plans to target Iran economically with the “financial equivalent” of a bombing campaign.
“Yesterday, we announced Operation Economic Fury. ... And the Iranians should know that this is going to be the financial equivalent of what we saw in the kinetic activities,” Bessent told reporters at a White House briefing on Wednesday, referring to the U.S. and Israeli campaign of airstrikes against Iran.
Bessent said the United States could also impose secondary sanctions on countries that purchase Iranian oil.
“We have told countries that if you are buying Iranian oil, that if Iranian money is sitting in your banks, we are now willing to apply secondary sanctions,” he said.

President Donald Trump is beginning to turn the screws on the Iranian regime.
He's blockaded any shipments coming in or out of their ports while letting other ships through.
That's going to put their economy, which was already heading into the dumper, on potential life support. It's going to hit the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) right where they live. If they don't find their way out of that situation, it's not sustainable. It will either force them back to the table for a deal, or it's going to put even more pressure on the regime.
Additionally, after Iran tried to create chaos and control the Strait of Hormuz, tankers coming to the U.S. Gulf coast oil then increased, making us more of an alternative.
But if that wasn't enough, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had another shoe to drop on them. Bessent announced that, in addition to what they had already done with their "maximum pressure" campaign on Iran since last year, the Trump administration was also launching "Operation Economic Fury," and making use of what might prove to be a "fatal mistake" by the regime to bomb their Gulf neighbors.

Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., called Tuesday for the House to impeach Chief Judge James Boasberg of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia after a federal appeals court blocked the judge's contempt investigation of Trump administration officials.
The three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in a 2-1 ruling Tuesday ordered Boasberg to end his probe into whether officials violated his earlier order halting deportation flights of Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador.
Schmitt, a Senate Judiciary Committee member, posted the demand on X shortly after the decision.
The appeals court majority, written by a judge appointed by President Donald Trump, described Boasberg's continued inquiry as an "improper investigation" and "clear abuse of discretion."
It warned the probe risked becoming an open-ended review of executive branch decisions on national security and immigration enforcement. A judge appointed by former President Joe Biden dissented, arguing the ruling could undermine the courts' contempt power and the rule of law.
Schmitt quoted the majority's language in his post.
"The D.C. Circuit ruled Boasberg's contempt crusade against Trump officials is an 'improper investigation' and 'clear abuse of discretion,'" he wrote.
"He tried to imprison Trump officials for deporting Venezuelan gang members. I'm calling on the House: Impeach Rogue Judge Boasberg."

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said China had been an “unreliable global partner” during the war in Iran, citing the communist regime’s hoarding of oil supplies and limits on certain exports.
Speaking to reporters on April 14, Bessent said he had raised the issue with Chinese officials. He declined to comment on whether it might derail U.S. President Donald Trump’s scheduled trip to China in mid-May, and he said that Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping had a good working relationship.
“I think the message for the visit is stability. We’ve had great stability in the relationship since last summer; that emanates from the top down,” Bessent said. “I think that communication is the key.”
The price of a barrel of Brent crude oil rose above $100 in March and early April. It has now dipped below $100 and hovered at around $95.

Some “very detailed” measures to verify Iran’s nuclear activities must be included in any potential U.S.–Iran agreement to end the war in the Middle East, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said on April 15.
The U.N. nuclear watchdog chief emphasized that thorough verification of the Iranian regime’s atomic activities would be required when the U.S.–Israeli war with the Islamic Republic comes to a close.
“Iran has a very ambitious, wide nuclear program, so all of that will require the presence of IAEA inspectors,” Grossi told reporters in Seoul, South Korea.
“Otherwise, you will not have an agreement,” he noted, saying that any accord on nuclear technology “requires very detailed verification mechanisms.”
“You will have an illusion of an agreement.”

The U.S. Senate on April 15 voted against advancing a resolution to halt further U.S. military operations against Iran.
Senators voted 52–47 against advancing the bill.
The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), came as a privileged motion under the 1973 War Powers Resolution, which was designed to constrain a president’s ability to prosecute military action without congressional approval. A privileged motion is given the highest priority in the Senate over other matters and allows an immediate debate and vote on the floor.
Duckworth’s resolution specifically calls for the removal of U.S. forces “from hostilities within or against the Islamic Republic of Iran that have not been authorized by Congress.”

The U.S. Senate on April 15 voted against advancing a resolution to halt further U.S. military operations against Iran.
Senators voted 52–47 against advancing the bill.
The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), came as a privileged motion under the 1973 War Powers Resolution, which was designed to constrain a president’s ability to prosecute military action without congressional approval. A privileged motion is given the highest priority in the Senate over other matters and allows an immediate debate and vote on the floor.
Duckworth’s resolution specifically calls for the removal of U.S. forces “from hostilities within or against the Islamic Republic of Iran that have not been authorized by Congress.”

A federal appeals court delivered an embarrassing reproach to U.S. District Judge James Boasberg on Tuesday, ordering him to shut down his “intrusive” criminal contempt of court investigation against the Trump administration.
The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia said Judge Boasberg’s continued investigation is “improper” and his reasoning for pursuing contempt of court prosecutions for Trump officials is a “dead end” because the judge is misreading his own orders.
Circuit Judge Neomi Rao said Judge Boasberg has crossed too many lines, risking damage to the separation of powers between the president and the courts. She said Judge Boasberg must end his pursuit of the president and his team.

Social media has made a mess of child exploitation, spawning a massive increase in reports but leaving the major technology companies struggling to turn over the kinds of details investigators need to track down culprits and rescue victims, said a report Thursday by the Senate’s senior lawmaker.
Some tech giants overreported, flooding investigators with “innocuous” images of children or adults and distracting them from valid cases. Others underreported, flagging images but failing to turn over actionable information to identify who was involved or where the exploitation was taking place.
Meta was faulted for failing to take action in instances where children contemplated suicide in chat logs.
Amazon AI Services submitted more than 1 million reports to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, but none included locations or suspects, rendering them useless to investigators.
“As a result of this deficient reporting, zero reports submitted by Amazon AI Services were actionable when made available to law enforcement in 2025,” NCMEC told Sen. Charles E. Grassley, president pro tempore of the Senate and chairman of its Judiciary Committee.
The Iowa Republican called the findings “disturbing” and fired off letters to tech companies saying he was “alarmed.”
“I am concerned that some companies have not provided NCMEC and law enforcement with sufficient data needed to protect kids and prosecute suspected predators,” he wrote.
Getting reports right is crucial. Missing a real instance of child exploitation hurts victims, but false positives overwhelm investigators, who then waste resources tracking down bogus leads.

President Donald Trump continued his war of words with Pope Leo XIV, requesting that the pontiff be reminded of the thousands of innocent protesters killed by the Iranian regime after nationwide protests there in January. The president used the murders as a basis for reasoning that Iran should not be allowed to have a nuclear weapon, information that Trump wanted relayed to the pope. He made the comments on his Truth Social account late Tuesday night.
“Will someone please tell Pope Leo that Iran has killed at least 42,000 innocent, completely unarmed, protesters in the last two months, and that for Iran to have a Nuclear Bomb is absolutely unacceptable,” said Trump.

Much has been made about the recent social media post made by President Donald Trump criticizing Pope Leo XIV as being “WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy.” In typical Trump-responsive fashion, many expressed outrage at the gall of the president to criticize the leader of the Catholic Church. Political charlatans rebuked Trump, accusing him of many false things that accompany hyperbolic and senseless condemnations predicated on emotional outbursts and not facts or reality. Because while many immediately rushed to vilify Trump, we must acknowledge the facts: The pope attacked Trump first, not the other way around.
An honest assessment of the feud, free of pearl-clutching hysteria or performative outrage, requires an objective review of the pope’s rhetoric. To understand the tension between the Vatican and the White House, one must go back several months, to at least October, when Leo attacked Trump over illegal immigration enforcement operations in the United States.

In 2016, Donald J. Trump rose to the top of the Republican field for President of the United States with his unwavering commitment to build the wall along America’s southern border should voters grant him the privilege of serving as Commander in Chief. The rest is history. Trump easily beat numerous primary election foes and held off a competitive challenge from Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton to capture the White House.
“Build the wall” became more than a campaign slogan. President Trump was very serious about keeping his promises to the American people, and border security was a top commitment. The administration sought to work with Congress to procure the necessary funds to complete the wall along the entire southern border. However, these efforts were very slow, as liberal political and special interests fought the Trump Administration at every turn. Thankfully, President Trump did not give up and relentlessly installed as many miles of the wall as he could before leaving office at the conclusion of his first term.
Then the Biden Administration began, ushering in the worst border crisis in our country's history. Millions of illegal aliens poured into the United States – largely unabated by walls or executive policies. Cartels exploited holes in the border wall, directing their loads of migrants to the gaps for easy access into America. Biden shamefully let materials for the wall go unused, wasting them on the desert floor near the international border with Mexico, where they rusted away.
When President Trump assumed office again in January 2024, he immediately set out to secure the border – this time with more resolve than his previous term. The Trump Administration resumed efforts to build the wall at the border, closing the gaps and improving technology to aid agents in pursuing illegal crossers. Unfortunately, these actions to build the wall have again met opposition from the usual suspects from the first term – liberal politicians and special interests.

The Trump administration is intensifying efforts to identify illegal aliens and crack down on fraud within migrant communities, including a forthcoming executive order that would require banks to collect customers' citizenship information, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Monday in an exclusive interview with Semafor.
Speaking at Semafor's World Economy event in Washington on Monday, Bessent defended the proposed measure as a national security and financial transparency step, arguing the U.S. lacks sufficient visibility into who participates in its banking system.
The push comes amid a broader Trump administration campaign to curb fraud and tighten oversight tied to illegal immigration.
"It's in process. And I don't think it's unreasonable, because: Why don't we have information on who's in our banking system?" Bessent said.
"I have a place in the UK; they want to know who lives in every apartment, and how do we know that it's not part of a foreign terrorist organization?" he added.

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., told Newsmax on Tuesday that President Donald Trump must stay the course in Iran and "finish the job," warning that anything less would leave the threat of a nuclear-armed regime intact.
Appearing on "Ed Henry The Big Take," the Wisconsin Republican rejected the notion that he supports a new war, instead arguing the U.S. is confronting a decades-long conflict initiated by Tehran.
"I was asked … 'You're a big supporter of this war in Iran,'" Johnson said. "No, I'm not.
"I do not support the war that the Iranian ayatollahs declared on us 47 years ago. What I support is ending it once and for all," Johnson said.
He defined victory in absolute terms, saying it requires dismantling Iran's ability to enrich uranium and preventing it from ever becoming a nuclear power.
"You don't finish the job unless Iran no longer has a regime in power that is dedicated to enriching uranium, becoming a nuclear power, and continuing to build missiles and drones by the thousands to devastate the region," Johnson said.
He pointed to Trump's remarks about meeting the families of fallen U.S. service members at Dover, saying their message reinforced the need for decisive action.
"To a person, they said, 'OK, we made the sacrifice — now finish the job,'" Johnson said.

Unfortunately, many of the biggest and best projects in America remain mired in the excess of our bureaucracies, burdened by red tape and approval delays. Congress has an opportunity to do something about it by passing meaningful permitting reform, making it easier for projects big and small to get built — and quickly. Republicans should make permitting reform a key priority when they return to Washington after the Easter break and deliver a win for President Donald Trump.

Chinese doctors murder and organ harvest political prisoners.
As detailed in “Killed to Order,” a thoroughly researched new book by Epoch Times senior editor Jan Jekielek, political prisoners such as Falun Gong practitioners and Uygur Muslims are tissue-typed and killed to supply product for the country’s burgeoning transplant black market in human kidneys and livers. This is why the wait for a vital organ in China may be as short as a week, whereas it may take years in countries with ethical transplant systems.
The Chinese Communist Party is an unmitigated tyranny, and the government deploys forced organ harvesting as a means of control. But Jekielek also attributes part of the blame for the atrocity to utilitarian bioethics, a value system aimed at minimizing suffering—even if that leads to the sacrifice of some people for the greater good. Such thinking, he writes, “represents a fundamentally different way of thinking about human life” than following the “do no harm” medical ethic epitomized by the Hippocratic Oath.

A Chinese company is recalling cough drops that were sold across the United States, according to a notice published this past week on the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) website.
The Xianmen-based company, Xiamen Kang Zhongyuan Biotechnology Co., Ltd., initiated a recall of more than a dozen products on March 20. The FDA on April 10 classified the action as a Class II recall.
A Class II recall is a situation that the FDA defines as one “in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote,” according to its website.

President Trump decided to order some McDonald’s for lunch to celebrate his signature ‘no tax on tips’ policy, which has been predictably popular with working-class voters. Most of the press schedule was marked as “closed” for the pool, but plans can change, and they did.
The DoorDash Grandma said she saved over $11,000 by not having to claim her tips. The president tipped her $100.

Report: Rubio Reassures GOP Senators on Iran Policy

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Donald Trump met with top Senate Republicans to discuss Iran policy, as the administration continues to insist that any agreement must prevent Tehran from enriching uranium, the Washington Examiner reported.
Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, R-Wyo., said he spoke with Rubio during a White House visit that included a meeting with Trump. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., also joined the discussion.
Barrasso said Rubio reaffirmed the administration's position on zero enrichment as negotiations continue, addressing concerns among some Republicans that a deal could leave Iran with part of its nuclear capability intact.
Trump has said negotiations remain focused on blocking Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and suggested the United States would act to secure uranium if a deal fails.
Barrasso said he was "not surprised" recent talks stalled, pointing to what he described as a firmer negotiating posture.
"The difference is, when [then-Secretary of State] John Kerry had that discussion last time and the Iranian negotiator left, John Kerry ran after him," Barrasso said.
"That's not going to happen with us, with this administration or our secretary of state."
Graham has called for a congressional review process for any agreement, signaling that Senate Republicans want a role in evaluating the outcome of negotiations.
Barrasso declined to say whether lawmakers should formally approve a deal, suggesting the question remains open as talks continue.
"There's still plenty of time left, and we'll see how this resolves, but it's going to resolve," Barrasso said.
Republican leadership is preparing to assess support within the conference, with Barrasso saying senators will have a "long discussion" on Iran and related policy matters as they return to Washington.
The talks come as Democrats have pushed for votes on war powers tied to Iran, though Republicans have rejected those efforts.

The Chinese regime’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, has met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang on April 10 during a state visit, while the U.S.-Iran peace talks failed to solidify the conditional two-week ceasefire.
Analysts told The Epoch Times that the Chinese regime is trying to determine Kim’s view of the evolving geopolitical landscape after their “Axis of Evil” partner, the Iranian regime, was significantly weakened by the United States and Israel.
