Petraeus to Newsmax: Iran Still Wants Nukes

Iran still wants a nuclear device and may want one even more now as a deterrent against further conflict, retired Army Gen. David Petraeus told Newsmax on Tuesday, warning that the United States must match Tehran's brinkmanship and be prepared to return to fighting if negotiations fail.

Petraeus, a former CIA director and former U.S. Central Command commander, made the comments on "The Record With Greta Van Susteren" hours before President Donald Trump announced he was extending the two-week U.S.-Iran ceasefire indefinitely until Tehran submits a peace proposal.

Trump said on Truth Social that he was acting at Pakistan's request and cited Iran's "seriously fractured" government, while directing the U.S. military to continue its blockade of Iranian ports.

Asked what he would do if he were president, Petraeus described the standoff as "a bit of a test of wills" and pointed to visible splits in the Iranian government.

He noted that Iran's foreign minister recently said the Strait of Hormuz was open to traffic, only for the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to countermand that statement, declaring it closed.

"We know that they're very good at brinksmanship, and I think that we're going to have to show that we are good at brinksmanship as well," Petraeus said.Both sides want a negotiated end, he added, but Washington should avoid appearing "too eager."

... Petraeus put the stockpile at roughly 1,000 pounds, describing it as "one turn of the process below weapons grade." IAEA figures reported before the June 2025 strikes placed the stockpile at 440.9 kilograms, or about 972 pounds, at sites including the heavily damaged Esfahan complex.

He said Iran's intent to weaponize uranium was confirmed when Israel seized its nuclear research archive from a Tehran warehouse and exposed what he called years of lies about its program. The current stockpile, he argued, goes far beyond any civilian need for medical isotopes or power generation.

"Well, the fact is they want to have a nuclear device," he said.

A U.S. victory in the war with Iran will help deter a Chinese military assault on Taiwan, the commander of the Indo-Pacific Command told Congress on Tuesday.

Adm. Sam Paparo, head of the Hawaii-based command in charge of military forces in the Asia-Pacific region, also revealed that China rapidly expanded both conventional and nuclear forces in the past two years. He urged the Pentagon and defense contractors to speed the development and deployment of the arms needed to deter Beijing.

“There’s no substitute for prevailing on the battlefield,” Adm. Paparo told the Senate Armed Services Committee during a hearing on the need to win the Iran war.

President Donald Trump on April 21 called for the Iranian regime to release eight women who are allegedly set to be executed as negotiations between Tehran and Washington were scheduled for the same day.

“To the Iranian leaders, who will soon be in negotiations with my representatives: I would greatly appreciate the release of these women. I am sure that they will respect the fact that you did so,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Trump wrote that if Iran does “no harm” to the women, it “would be a great start to our negotiations.”

We’re now beginning the seventh week of military operations against Iran. There’s a lull now during a negotiation, but the war continues.

If you look at Iran, it’s a very strange situation because its command and control have been decapitated. Its military has been, I guess you’d call it, inert. There is no air force. There are only PT boats left of its navy. Its army is of no use, since this is an air war. Its nuclear, military, industrial complex has been bombed to smithereens. It’s probably lost half a trillion dollars in a half-century-long investment in military hardware and military industries, at the expense of a very restive population.

Epic Fury just sent China’s Xi Jinping an unmistakable message

On Monday, China’s Xi Jinping let the mask slip.

After weeks remaining largely absent from the diplomatic picture as the US conducted Operation Epic Fury against Iran, Xi called Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed bin Salman to publicly urge a peaceful reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

The pressure on Beijing is showing.

At least five Iranian-linked tankers heading from the Gulf of Oman to Malaysia have changed course after the US Navy warned that ships carrying Iranian oil would be intercepted anywhere in the world.

And now, every concession the IRGC withholds costs it more than the one before.

Operation Epic Fury destroyed the military capacity Iran has used to threaten to close the strait, and dismantled the architecture the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps built to survive the decapitation of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

What remains is a rump regime without the arsenal, command or finances that lent its threats weight.

President Trump should read this as the strongest card he holds against Beijing.

Pope Needs to Read Scripture, Listen to the Byrds, and Back Trump

A war of words escalated between Pope Leo XIV and President Donald Trump early this month when the president promised that "a whole civilization will die" if Iran didn't make a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a statement the pope found "truly unacceptable."

This set off an intense verbal feud between the two leaders.

However, the pontiff appeared to have enough by Saturday when he said it was "not in my interest at all" to debate the president about the Iran war, but that he would continue preaching the Gospel’s message of peace.

Truth be told, we all want peace, but while he reviews Gospel passages, he may want to check out Matthew 24:6-8, which states that wars are all a part of life on Earth.

"You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom," it says, and it's not just war.

"There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains," the passage adds.

And sometimes we have to endure the bad in order to achieve the good.

Leo may also want to thumb back to the Old Testament and check out Ecclesiastes, which says there’s a time for everything on Earth — both good and bad.

According to Ecclesiastes 3:1 and 8, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”

Verse 8 says there will be "A time for war and a time for peace."

Being American by birth, the pontiff may get a kick out of hearing this passage sung by the folk-rock group, the Byrds. The song is named "Turn! Turn! Turn!"

Pope Leo was only 10 years old when the Byrds came out with it, but he may still remember it.

Eric Lyman observed in a Just The News article over the weekend that today's spat between the Vatican and a world leader is nothing new.

He noted Napoleon's clash with Pope Pius VII more than 200 years ago, and the uneasy alliance that another Pope Pius — Pius XII — had with Adolph Hitler and Benito Mussolini during WWII.

Lyman also mentioned British King Henry VIII's 16th century break with Pope Clement VII, but there was one in particular that was also picked up by conservative commentator Scott Jennings:

That was the rift between Pope John Paul II and Eastern Europe's communist regimes. Polish by birth, this was personal to John Paul, and the pontiff had an equally strong ally in then-President Ronald Reagan.

Jennings told a CNN panel last week that this could be a real John Paul II - Ronald Reagan moment, who worked together to crush the Soviet Union.

"There's diplomacy going on right now, and there is a real chance because of what Trump has done and the situation we find ourselves in, for the world to bring pressure, economic pressure and diplomatic pressure, just like what was done in the '80s to bear against this terrorist regime, just the way it was brought to bear against the Soviets in the 1980s," Jennings said.

"And so I get the feeling sometimes the pope might be feeling a little adversarial, at least in some of his comments toward President Trump. But in this moment where you have, there’s no bombs falling right now. There's a blockade, there’s some restraint going on, and there’s talks going on."

Jennings concluded, "This, to me, is a moment where you could have a partnership for peace in a way that brings this terrorist regime that, by the way, has been at war with the West for nearly 50 years, to its knees."

Iran historically is an evil regime, even discounting its nuclear weapon ambitions and its state sponsorship of terrorism throughout the Mideast and beyond.

More than 36,500 Iranians were killed by Iran's security goons during the Jan. 8-9 crackdown on nationwide protests, making it the deadliest two-day protest massacre in history, according to documents reviewed by Iran International's Editorial Board.

But that would require President Trump and Pope Leo to call a truce and start working together to crush an unholy Islamic regime run by ruthless leaders.

If they can do it, they would both come out of it as heroes in the free world, and Leo would likely be hailed by people of all faiths — except Islam.

It could even make them co-recipients of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

But above all, it would give the pontiff an amazing legacy early into his papacy, one that would assure his place in history.

President Trump will press China on its export of deadly fentanyl and related chemicals during a meeting next month with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, according to a senior Trump administration trade official.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who is leading preparations for the Beijing summit, also told Congress that the president will discuss obtaining greater access to rare earth minerals largely controlled globally by China when the two leaders meet.

Mr. Greer disclosed some details of the planned summit set for mid-May during testimony before a House Appropriations subcommittee on Thursday.

We've been reporting on the chokehold that President Donald Trump has on the Iranian regime, with Operation Epic Fury and his blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

It is considerable. From decimating its military to putting Iran in an economic vise with the blockade on ships going in and out of its ports. The U.S. is also reportedly considering seizing Iranian ships elsewhere in the world. They appeared to be talking about ships that are violating sanctions. On top of that, there's "Operation Economic Fury," going after the assets of the Iranian regime in Gulf state banks.

Don't Trust *And* Verify: US Amb. Waltz Says Iran Can Be Assured of 1 Thing Ahead of Any Nukes Agreement 

That is a prodigious squeeze play. Now, given the time, the U.S. could just sit and blockade them into submission because the regime is losing $435 million a day, something that they cannot sustain. That could itself topple the regime.

But there's someone else Trump has put a hold on in this, and it's been fascinating to watch this all play out from the Panama Canal and Venezuela to now: that's China. They're over the barrel too, because of the blockade on Iran.

Republican Rep. Chip Roy (TX-21) plans to introduce a bill named after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani that would target immigrants tied to Communist or radical Islamist organizations.

The bill, which was provided to Breitbart News, seeks to prevent people with radical political affiliations from entering the country.

According to the bill text, Roy would amend existing immigration law to prohibit the admission and naturalization of any alien who is or was a member of, affiliated with, or advocates or advocated for a Chinese communist party, communist party, socialist party, Islamic fundamentalist party, or any other totalitarian party (or subdivision or affiliate thereof), domestic or foreign.

The legislation would also apply to any alien who is or was affiliated with, or who advocates or advocated for, any organization that advocates socialism, communism, Chinese communism, Marxism, or Islamic fundamentalism.

The bill would also create new grounds for deportation. Under the legislation, an alien could be removed from the United States if he has engaged, is engaged, or at any time after admission engages in advocacy for communism, Chinese communism, socialism, Marxism, or Islamic fundamentalism; writes, distributes, circulates, prints, displays, possesses, or publishes any written, electronic, or printed matter that advocates those ideologies or that is on behalf of or advocates for such parties; or is, has been, or becomes a member of or affiliated with such parties or organizations.

Grand Jury Subpoenas Issued in Probe of Fmr CIA Head Brennan

Former senior intelligence and FBI officials cooperating with the Justice Department's criminal investigation into whether former CIA Director John Brennan lied to Congress were subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury in Washington, D.C., this week, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter, CBS News reports.

The focus of the probe is on Brennan's 2023 testimony to Congress about the intelligence community's 2017 assessment that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election.

Lawmakers led by House Republicans claim Brennan misrepresented the CIA's role in using the Steele dossier in that 2017 intelligence report.

The subpoenas went out to witnesses shortly after the DOJ appointed Joe diGenova to formally take over the criminal probe.

Brennan served as CIA director under President Barack Obama and was in that role when the intelligence community in January 2017 published an assessment detailing Russian interference aimed at helping President Donald Trump defeat Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016.

An investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller concluded that Russia meddled on Trump's behalf and that his campaign welcomed the assistance, but it did not find sufficient evidence to prove a criminal conspiracy.

Trump and his allies call the whole Russia probe a hoax to undermine his presidency.

The Justice Department last year received a criminal referral from Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, the Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, alleging that Brennan made false statements before the panel in 2023 about the preparation of the intelligence community assessment. Brennan and his lawyers have vigorously denied any wrongdoing.

The investigation has been unfolding for months in Florida, with investigators having lined up interviews and issued subpoenas for records.

The Trump administration is rehauling its approach to wrestling influence in sub-Saharan Africa from China, an uphill battle against decades of Chinese momentum.

While the end of the Cold War saw the United States assert its unipolar moment over much of the world, this didn’t extend to sub-Saharan Africa, which ranked low on the list of U.S. priorities. The lack of U.S. interest helped facilitate China’s rise in the region, which has exploded since 2000. China’s dominance in sub-Saharan Africa has now exceeded anything ever achieved by the U.S. in the region.

The Trump administration is looking to buck this trend by drastically reworking its approach from previous administrations, switching from an aid-focused model to one of trade, a focus on critical mineral acquisition, and transactional economic cooperation.

Joe diGenova will be sworn in on Monday in Miami as counsel to the attorney general to lead the Russia collusion hoax investigation, according to Newsmax White House correspondent Mike Carter.

DiGenova will work out of the Fort Pierce, Florida, courthouse, where a grand jury has been empaneled since January.

Fort Pierce is the home of Judge Aileen Cannon, who presided over Special Counsel Jack Smith's documents case against President Donald Trump until she dismissed the indictment after determining in July 2024 that his appointment violated the Constitution.

DiGenova served as U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia from 1983 to 1988 and has decades of experience in federal law enforcement and legal matters.

U.S. envoy for special missions Richard Grenell told Newsmax on Sunday that President Donald Trump's negotiating strategy has positioned the United States "on the cusp of a historic, incredible win" in its standoff with Iran.

Speaking on "Wake Up America Weekend," Grenell pointed to Trump's use of pressure-backed diplomacy as the key to shifting the balance after years of policies under previous administrations.

"Look, I think what we're watching is Donald Trump do what Donald Trump does, which is the art of the deal," Grenell said.

"He is one of the best negotiators we've ever seen," he added.

Grenell emphasized that Trump's approach combines diplomacy with credible consequences, including potential military action, sanctions, and economic pressure.

"When he puts out a very credible threat, people know that it's not just a threat, it's actually credible and something could happen," Grenell said.

If you do not negotiate in good faith, if you do not come to an agreement, there will be a very serious consequence behind it," he said.

That leverage, he said, empowers U.S. negotiators at the table.

"Imagine sitting at a table and you're trying to negotiate with Iran … and you can tell them, Look, if we don't come up with an agreement here at this peaceful table, I'm going to have to pick up and transfer this file over to the Pentagon and to the White House," Grenell said.

"Here is your time to negotiate," he said.

Grenell contrasted Trump's strategy with what he described as years of concessions under former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

"What we have to remember is that where we are with Iran is that they have always had cash credit and sanctions relief from Presidents Obama and Biden," he said.

"President Trump has completely changed that," Grenell said.

Instead of easing restrictions, Grenell said the Trump administration has tightened economic pressure.

"The sanctions are not being relieved. They're actually in place, and strong credit has dried up," he said.

"Instead of boots on the ground, he's got boats on the water, and boats on the water are actually stopping their ability to collect cash — their economy is in freefall," he said.

Grenell added that the pressure campaign has extended to Iran's leadership structure, though uncertainty remains about who could emerge next.

"When you squeeze them like this and you take out their regime at the top, which has largely been taken out, but we're not sure who's rising yet, as soon as we're able to figure out that portion, we will be able to continue squeezing them," he said.

Despite the complexity of ceasefire and diplomatic negotiations, Grenell said Trump is balancing patience with urgency.

"President Trump will have great patience, but he won't have patience that will last for very long," he said.

"I've been working on this issue for 25 years," Grenell said.

"President Trump is the first one to actually take action rather than just talk, and we are on the cusp of a historic, incredible win for this region that people have been talking about for 25 years," he said.

Options concerning Iran are wide open for President Donald Trump because the country's leaders again have shown "you can’t trust their word," House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chair James Comer, R-Ky., told Newsmax on Sunday.

Appearing on "Wake Up America Weekend," Comer said Iran’s latest actions — including violating a ceasefire and threatening to disrupt the Strait of Hormuz — underscore why the Trump administration is keeping every option on the table as tensions escalate.

"Well, I think everything is on the table," Comer told co-hosts Kenzie Beach and Kyle Lowder.

"Iran has proven, once again, you can’t trust their word when they say there's a ceasefire," he said.

Comer emphasized that Trump entered negotiations with clear-eyed realism about Tehran's track record and has already demonstrated he is prepared to act decisively if necessary.

Despite what Democrat critics claim, President Donald Trump has the right to prevent Iran from killing Americans, Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., said Sunday.

Speaking in a weekend television interview, Scott forcefully defended Trump's authority to take decisive military action against Iran, pushing back on Democrat accusations that the president is overstepping his powers amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

"Every president has said since Truman that they have the ability to use the military to protect Americans," Scott said.

"So this president has that right, and he’s doing the right thing," he said.

In his recent visit to Beijing, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez urged the Chinese communist regime to play a bigger role in global issues such as security, inequality, and climate action.

Analysts told The Epoch Times that although Sánchez’s call doesn’t represent the European Union’s stance, it does represent a dangerous trend in Europe.

Visiting China from April 11 to April 15, Sánchez gave a speech at Tsinghua University in Beijing, calling upon the Chinese regime to assume more substantial global leadership responsibilities.

“Europe will also have to redouble its efforts, especially now that the United States has decided to withdraw from many of these fronts,” he said.

Retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Blaine Holt told Newsmax on Saturday that Iran's declarations that the Strait of Hormuz is closed amount to posturing by a collapsing regime, even as commercial vessels continue to transit the waterway under tighter conditions.

His comments on "America Right Now" came after reports that Iranian gunboats fired on tankers in the strait and that Tehran had again declared the waterway closed to traffic in response to a U.S. blockade of Iranian ports. 

Holt said maritime tracking data he was monitoring during the interview showed vessels still moving through the strait, though not at normal volumes.

He attributed the slower pace to insurance concerns and precautions against potential mining, rather than to any effective Iranian blockade.

"Well, I can say that the Pacific Ocean is closed. I could do that from right here in Idaho. But if I don't have a Navy, if I don't have the means to close the Pacific Ocean, then I don't think they'd listen to me for very long," Holt said, drawing a parallel to Iran's closure claim.

On Newsmax’s "Saturday Report," political strategist Dick Morris dismissed Iran’s claim that it controls the Strait of Hormuz, arguing instead that “the U.S. has control of the Straits, and at any point they need to exercise it if they can.”

Morris framed the situation as the culmination of a major shift in global energy power driven by U.S. oil production.

"The world produces 100 million barrels of oil a day," he said, noting that U.S. output had once fallen to "only 4 million barrels out of the 100 million," allowing OPEC to dominate and declare, "your trade is insignificant."

That dynamic, he argued, has now reversed.

"About two weeks ago, [President Donald] Trump increased American oil exports to 14 million barrels a day, completely wiping out everybody else," Morris said, adding that "what Trump basically said was, ‘I am the new OPEC. I will decide who gets to export what to whom, when and where.'" 

According to Morris, Iran initially resisted that shift, "Iran said to hell with you. We don’t recognize it," but changed course after the threat of a U.S. embargo.

"Trump said, 'I’ll impose a total embargo and nobody will be able to get any oil in,'" he explained, prompting Iran to "basically back down."

While Tehran has not formally conceded, Morris suggested the outcome is inevitable.

"They haven’t conceded it completely diplomatically, but it’s on the way," he said, calling it "the most amazing triumph you can imagine for Donald Trump."

Looking ahead, Morris predicted a decisive resolution: "In a few days, Iran is going to officially surrender and the U.S. will control it," he said, adding that "the U.S. Navy will basically be the blockade enforcer" in what he described as a "permanent situation."

Appeals Court Allows Construction of White House Ballroom to Continue

The order came just a day after a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction blocking above-ground construction of the ballroom.

A U.S. appeals court on April 17 put on hold a lower court order that had halted construction of the White House ballroom, allowing the project to proceed for now.

Previously, U.S. District Judge Richard Leon issued a preliminary injunction blocking above-ground construction of the ballroom but allowed “below-ground” construction of national security facilities to continue. Leon had said the project cannot continue without authorization from Congress.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit on April 17 blocked Leon’s injunction and scheduled a June 5 hearing to decide on whether the project should be halted.

Time was when people could agree to disagree. Time was when friends and family remained friends and family, even if you disagreed on some issues, inside or out of politics and policy. In my own family, my siblings and I have a quiet truce in place to not discuss politics; they are all '60s hippie libs, and I'm a hard-shell right-of-center soapbox shouter, so when we all get together, we talk about our kids, our grandkids, share memories of when we were all young, and we all get along fine. They are my brother and sisters, after all, and that counts for more than anything else.

Or, at least, it should.

A new survey out of the United Kingdom shows that young Brits are increasingly worried about being "canceled" for their political beliefs, and are keeping their mouths shut because of that fear. Yes, really.

A survey by the Economist Educational Foundation found that 22% of 15 to 17-year-olds had stopped themselves sharing political opinions because they were worried about criticism, along with 20% of 10 to 14-year-olds.

Nearly one in four of the 4,000 students aged between 10 and 17 who took part in the survey said they have been asked to stop voicing their political views at school. 

The results also showed that 44% of 15 to 17-year-olds said they would not feel ready to vote in the next election.

So, why ask these kids, you might ask? Here's why, and it's a catastrophically stupid idea, but it has been floated here, in the United States, by the left. That's a key distinction, and I'll get back to that in a moment.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi agreed on Friday that the Strait of Hormuz would be open, albeit using the Iranian-approved route.

But he immediately got in trouble for what he said, because he didn't address the U.S. blockade in his tweet. As President Donald Trump said, the U.S. blockade of Iranian ships continued. The attacks showed the chaos their leadership is in.

The other main negotiator, Mohammad Ghalibaf, after likely seeing what happened with Araghchi, reneged on the deal and said it would remain closed until the blockade stopped.

So then they decided to punctuate their tirade by firing on ships on Saturday.

But they're still in a position where they can't play these games without winning prizes for being stupid.

If the U.S. blockade of any ships coming to or going from any Iranian ports wasn't enough to put the squeeze on them, their tantrums are about to earn them another big consequence.

The U.S. military is preparing in coming days to board Iran-linked oil tankers and seize commercial ships in international waters, according to U.S. officials, expanding its naval crackdown beyond the Middle East.

The report indicates that it could be anywhere, not just near Iran or the Gulf of Oman.

Gen. Dan Caine appeared to touch on this earlier in the week when he said they would pursue Iranian ships in international waters or any ships trying to provide material support to Iran. They generally are talking about sanctioned and "dark fleet" vessels, which are trying to avoid legal restrictions.

The Iranian regime has resumed its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz the day after President Donald Trump announced that Tehran had reopened the waterway. Iran initially agreed to allow shipping through the strait after Trump gave a two-week extension on his deadline to come to a peace agreement. But it appears the regime has reneged on that promise.

The standoff over the Strait of Hormuz quickly escalated again Saturday as Iran reversed its reopening of the crucial waterway and fired on ships attempting to pass, in retaliation after the United States pressed ahead with its blockade choking off Iranian ports.

Confusion over the strait, through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil passes, threatened to deepen the energy crisis roiling the global economy and push the two countries toward renewed conflict. The ceasefire between them is due to run out by mid-next week, and Pakistani mediators were working to put together a new round of direct negotiations to keep the truce going.

Iran’s joint military command said Saturday that “control of the Strait of Hormuz has returned to its previous state ... under strict management and control of the armed forces.” It warned that it would continue to block transit through the strait as long as the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports remained in effect. 

Revolutionary Guard gunboats on Saturday opened fire on a tanker transiting the strait and an unknown projectile hit a container vessel, damaging some of the containers, the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said without identifying the vessels. TankerTrackers.com reported that two Indian-flagged vessels were forced to turn around after being fired on by Iran, including a supertanker carrying Iraqi oil.
