Iwo Jima is a storied moment in the history of the American military, most especially for the United States Marine Corps. It's touched many an American family, including my own; my late uncle, a Marine, took a Japanese bayonet through the shoulder on Iwo Jima, and almost died of sepsis as a result.

Now, in a story that will send fiery outrage through the Marines and indeed through all of America's service members and veterans, a man from Stafford County, Virginia, has allegedly taken a sledgehammer to the Iwo Jima monument near Marine Corps Base Quantico. His name: Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano.

President Donald Trump accused Iran on Thursday of fabricating attacks on oil tankers to drive up energy prices ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections, insisting that Tehran is seeking to disrupt markets despite a recovery in regional oil shipments.

"Iran is doing everything they can to drive up the price of Oil prior to the U.S. Midterm Election," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "They are even making up fake hits, mines, and everything else, because more Oil is coming through the Hormuz Strait now than it did even prior to the beginning of the Conflict."

His comments came as Iranian state television reported that seven tankers had been damaged overnight in the Strait of Hormuz.

Why Invite a Measure of Suspicion Into Ordinary American Relationships?

America Must Not Become a Nation of Paid Informants.

America was built on trust. Take that away, and what do we have left?

Business is built on trust. Commerce is built on trust. Our relationships with family, friends, neighbors, employees, and business associates depend on trust.

It gives us confidence to shake hands, make investments, extend credit, and open doors for one another.

Without trust, there is no confidence. Without confidence, there is little motivation to do business. And without commerce, our economy cannot thrive. 

That is why President Donald Trump’s newly announced $25 million fraud whistleblower initiative troubles this writer so deeply.

The program offers rewards of up to $30,000 for information leading to qualifying fraud convictions or significant enforcement actions.

I fully support the president’s determination to eliminate fraud.

Those stealing taxpayer dollars must be investigated, prosecuted, and held accountable.

Back in the glory days of DOGE, Elon Musk used to joke that he was "Public Enemy no. 2" behind President Trump, the obvious primary target of the Left. Musk has, of course, left his gig with the Trump administration to focus on flying cars and rocket ships, but he apparently still remains a serious threat to Democrats.

And those Democrats are more than happy to let him know that they plan to go after him if they take back the majority in the House. The "Dem gavels," warns Politico, will be "coming for Elon Musk."

Politico wrote Tuesday that "Democrats have long eyed investigating the world’s richest man and the GOP’s top donor," and that "senior members are mulling how a range of panels could target Musk and a huge swath of his businesses."

Musk's biggest infractions are that he took a blowtorch to the Democrat slush fund known as USAID and is currently pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into Republican campaigns for the midterms, but it sounds like House Democrats are cooking up reasons to investigate him. 

For instance, some Democrat House members say they plan to look into reports that Musk recently throttled Starlink access to the Ukraine military.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) wants to know “What happens when one guy gets a giant contract from the government and then uses it to do something that shuts down communication in a war that has been extremely important to the United States to support Ukraine?”

TAIPEI, Taiwan—China is increasing espionage against Taiwan, while ramping up disinformation campaigns and cyberattacks that intend to interfere with next month’s local elections, according to Taiwan’s top intelligence agency.

In a report submitted to parliament this week, Taiwan’s National Security Bureau detailed the security threats facing Taiwan.

The submission came ahead of a legislative hearing on Oct. 22, at which the bureau’s chief, Tsai Ming-yen, is scheduled to appear before the legislature’s Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee.

China has used intelligence operatives and online networks to infiltrate Taiwan’s military and government agencies, the bureau said.

Embattled Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) is allowed to speak freely about the federal immigration fraud investigation against her – a privilege President Trump was not afforded during his legal woes, Attorney General Todd Blanche noted on the latest episode of “Pod Force One.”

Blanche, who served as Trump’s personal lawyer when the president faced four criminal indictments during his 2024 campaign, couldn’t discuss the details of the ongoing case against Omar but drew a contrast between the Minnesota Democrat’s treatment and the various gag orders imposed on Trump.

 “To the extent that [Omar’s] commented on it, one of the things that she said is that we’re not going to keep her quiet, right? We’re not trying to keep her quiet,” Blanche told “Pod Force One” host Miranda Devine

In the news right now, it’s rioting in France, rioting in Belgium, rioting in Italy, rioting in Albania, with other countries experiencing threats to riot. Who are these people? Well, they’re supposedly students that are angry that their classrooms or their education is not competitive or it’s subpar.

They’re socialists that are driving the unrest, but especially they’re immigrants. And let me just say at the outset, it’s very common among the Left in the West, in Europe, Canada, the United States to immediately bash anybody who criticizes immigration. But the Left is the party that created this problem because most people who are centrist or independents or on the right approve of immigration with a qualifier.

It has to be legal. It has to be diverse from all over the world, not just from Africa ...

The U.S. State Department on Oct. 19 added a risk label to its travel advisory for China, warning Americans living in or traveling to the country that they could be detained without credible evidence.

“The Department of State has determined that Americans are at serious risk of wrongful detention in China,” a spokesperson told The Epoch Times in a statement.

The newly included “D” label in the State Department’s travel advisory for mainland China came as Beijing continues to hold two U.S. citizens who Washington said were detained on wrongful charges.

President Donald Trump announced a new Department of Agriculture program offering $8 billion to farmers during harvest season, as rising diesel costs strain operations nationwide.

“And when the Republicans win, we will pass even more funding for our farmers,” Trump told a standing-room-only crowd of thousands during a rally in the Heartland Credit Union Arena in Park City, just north of Wichita, Kansas.

The Harvest Fuel Relief program will use a formula to determine losses and offset increased diesel costs, with calculations similar to those used in the established Farmer Bridge Assistance program, according to a statement from the Department of Agriculture.

President Donald Trump said Monday he had warned French President Emmanuel Macron years ago that immigration would create serious problems for France, arguing that the unrest sweeping the country underscores the need for tighter border controls.

"He's a friend of mine. I told him a long time ago, you're making a big mistake in France. You're letting everybody from the world come in," Trump told reporters outside the White House, according to Mediaite.

"The whole world was coming in. And as you know, Paris is going to be a Muslim city very soon, and that wasn't the deal," Trump said, recalling what he described as an earlier warning to Macron after Trump took office in 2017.

Asked about a possible meeting of President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin ‌and Chinese leader Xi Jinping to negotiate an end to the four-year-old Ukraine conflict, Rubio said: "There's been talks of a meeting. I don't know whether it's been ⁠finalized, but the president has been clear. He'd like the war in Ukraine and Russia to end."

Rubio landed in Samarkand on ⁠Sunday night to meet top officials of the C5+1 grouping that brings together the United States and the Muslim-majority post-Soviet states of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and ‌Turkmenistan.

PARIS—French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday condemned the violence and destruction wrought as nationwide protests descended into the worst rioting the country has seen in years.

 “Those who destroyed must pay, those who looted must repay, and those who sought to bring down the Republic will have to answer for it,” Macron told the French in a televised address on the evening of Oct. 18, a day after the unrest, which led to nearly 2,400 arrests.

Speaking of “a moment of extreme gravity,” Macron blamed the destruction on “seditious elements from ultra-left splinter groups, joined by many criminals,” and singled out the burning of the 19th-century City Hall in central France’s Limoges.

The day after waiving sanctions and tariffs related to Russian exports, US President Donald Trump said on Saturday he has yet to announce a final decision on the matter as Secretary of State Marco Rubio said officials want more time to evaluate the ‌situation.

Rubio said on Saturday that the president will use up to 60 days to assess the economic impact of Russia-related sanctions and tariffs that he waived a day earlier.

"A lot of you don't know what my decision is yet, but we'll figure it out, and you'll figure it out," Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago ⁠club in Palm Beach, Florida.

I spend a lot of time working in Paris, and I was there again recently. It remains one of the most beautiful and culturally important cities in the world. But beneath that beauty, France is facing an economic crisis that should concern every Western democracy. The protests spreading across France are being viewed through the familiar lenses of Left versus Right, immigration, and political unrest. Those issues certainly matter, but I believe the real story is much bigger. France is confronting the consequences of an economic model that has promised more than it can sustainably deliver.

Across Western Europe, tensions surrounding Muslim immigration, integration, national identity, and security have become major political issues. Governments have a responsibility to manage their borders, enforce their laws, and maintain public confidence. Those debates are not going away, nor should legitimate concerns be dismissed. But they cannot explain the full extent of France's economic problems. Immigration debates don't account for decades of government borrowing, high taxation, or weak economic growth. The underlying economic problem deserves far more attention.

The numbers tell the story. By June 2026, France's government debt had reached approximately €3.6 trillion, equivalent to 119 percent of GDP. Government spending amounted to approximately 57 percent of GDP in 2025, yet the country still ran a deficit exceeding 5 percent of GDP. Think about that for a moment. Government spending is equivalent to more than half the country's annual economic output, and France still cannot balance its books. These aren't estimates from political opponents. They are figures published by France's own national statistics agency.

For decades, France has embraced a socialist-style approach to economic policy built around expansive government programs, high taxation, and extensive regulation. The promise has been greater economic security, but the cost of maintaining those commitments has continued to grow. Meanwhile, economic growth remains weak, public debt keeps climbing, and the burden of financing the system falls heavily on businesses and workers. At some point, you have to ask whether the very policies designed to provide economic security are making economic success harder to achieve. France remains a capitalist economy, but one increasingly burdened by the cost of government.

U.S. Border Patrol apprehensions along the Mexican border fell to their lowest annual level since 1968 as President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown accelerated a decline that began under former President Joe Biden, according to Department of Homeland Security data released Friday.

Federal agents recorded 98,708 apprehensions of people crossing between ports of entry during the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, down from more than 2 million annually in 2022 and 2023, reports The Financial Times on Friday.

"The results could not be clearer: strong enforcement works," Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said.

President Donald Trump urged Republicans at a northern Kentucky rally Saturday to treat the midterm elections as a referendum on his presidency, warning that Democratic victories could reverse his administration's accomplishments.

Speaking in Highland Heights, Kentucky, located near Cincinnati, Trump promoted Republican Senate candidates, touted his economic record, and predicted the military campaign against Iran would end soon.

"In this election, I'm asking you to pretend that I'm on the ballot," Trump told supporters at the rally, shown live on Newsmax.

"This is the most important midterm in the history of our country because we've gotten more things done and they can undo them," he added.

The Trump administration banned unauthorized drone activity along the U.S.–Mexico border on Oct. 16 to increase airspace security as it cracks down on drug cartel drone operations.

The ban, established through a temporary flight restriction for drones, was announced in a joint statement by the Department of War, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Transportation. Friday’s announcement comes as U.S. officials have warned that the United States faces thousands of drone incursions at the southern border each month.

The new temporary flight restriction took effect Friday and prohibits any unauthorized drones from operating up to 400 feet above ground level. The restriction extends one nautical mile north of the U.S.–Mexico border.

The arrest of a suspected Chinese agent in southern California highlights how China’s Ministry of State Security conducts covert surveillance of political opponents, according to a former counterintelligence official.

Nick Eftimiades, a former CIA, Defense Intelligence Agency and State Department specialist on Chinese intelligence, said the operation by alleged Chinese agent Zhang Wanying and a second agent at the home of the son of Taiwan’s president in Washington state showed key elements of MSS spy tradecraft.

Ms. Zhang, also known as Heather, was arrested by FBI agents Oct. 4 as she was preparing to board a flight to Shanghai. She was charged with acting as an unregistered agent for China and is now in jail pending a trial.

A White House official on Friday told The Epoch Times that new White House press secretary Katie Zacharia has left her position about a week after she was named.

The White House also shared an X post from a Fox News reporter saying she is transitioning away from the position.

President Donald Trump on Friday said he offered Zacharia the option to reconsider taking the job after she was “treated very badly” in the media.

“I said to Katie just two minutes ago: ‘You don’t have to do this,’” he told reporters at the White House on Friday.

She has been treated “very nastily” by media outlets, Trump said, citing two interviews she had with Fox News, including one with host Sean Hannity in recent days. “Katie has been treated very badly by the media. Very, very badly. Very unfairly,” he said.

If the Schools Don’t Improve, Nothing Else Will

As we head toward the midterms, and as we look back to November 2024, it is interesting to note that the issue of education is rarely a topic of partisan debate or campaign promises. In 2000, education was on the minds of many in office, and it resulted in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Gov. Ron DeSantis made the elimination of Common Core a centerpiece of his first term, and he also made identity politics in the schools a high-profile target. But in this election season, education is an afterthought.

The quiet is strange, for the sad and simple truth is that American kids are graduating from high school with low skills and knowledge and with poor academic habits. Grades are high, to be sure, but standardized test scores keep falling. The discrepancy indicates that a lot of teachers and schools have given up on meaningful evaluation of performance. Fewer complete books are assigned, and fewer than that are actually read. Knowledge of history, civics, art, and literature is abysmal. Even those high school grads who get accepted to competitive schools such as Harvard and University of California-San Diego sometimes end up needing remedial math instruction.

For decades, educators have concocted theories and practices to get more out of the kids. Readers my age may remember the “open classrooms” layout, where different classes met in large areas in a school building, each class a few years apart with no barriers between them. The set-up was based on the notion that walls were uncomfortable for kids and hampered their learning. The experiment didn’t last.

Then there was the self-esteem movement, which said that kids would learn more if they felt better about themselves. Go light on correction, teachers were told, and ease up on criticism. It was a nice thought, but one with no empirical backing.

The accountability movement, which started in the 1980s, shifted attention away from kids and onto those responsible for educating them. Regular testing, it said, would weed out incompetent instructors, bogus curricula, and dysfunctional schools. To some extent, it succeeded in doing that, but the slide continued. That is why reformers (mostly on the right) championed charter schools and vouchers, which let parents do the job of improvement by the simple act of withdrawing their kids from bad situations. The method was not to fix existing schools but to create new and better ones.

Commentary

Taiwan remains a red line for Chinese leader Xi Jinping, while President Donald Trump faces a major test as Beijing exerts pressure. Yet Xi’s latest attempt to draw Washington closer to Beijing’s position yielded no public commitment.

According to China’s official account of the China–U.S. summit last month, Xi urged Trump to oppose “Taiwan independence” and handle the issue prudently, describing it as essential to stable bilateral relations. However, Taiwan was notably omitted from the White House’s list of summit outcomes.

Rather than answering in the language Beijing sought, Trump responded through quieter signals.

Today's Democrats are Kowtowing to Socialist Left

Where will Democrats go to get their principles, patriotism, and values back?

Democratic Socialist State Rep. Francesca Hong's near victory in the Wisconsin Democratic Governor's primary Tuesday, Abdul El-Sayed's narrow win in the recent Michigan Democratic Senate primary, and victories by several Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) candidates in June have sent shockwaves through the Democratic Party establishment.

These elections are clear evidence of the growing infestation and control of the socialist antisemitic left within the Democratic Party. 

The silence and failure by most of the Democratic leadership to condemn that infestation is a clear example of how far the lack of principle and courage among Democratic leaders has fallen.
