William Barr Blasts Media For Ignoring Surveillance Against Trump Campaign

* William Barr pulled no punches when discussing the media’s coverage of the origins of the Trump-Russia probe, as well as of the surveillance activities carried out against the Trump campaign.
* “Normally the media would be interested in letting the sunshine in and finding out what the truth is,” Barr told CBS News in an interview that aired Friday.
* “They’re supposed to be the watchdogs of, you know, our civil liberties.”
Attorney General William Barr accused the media in a new interview of being uninterested in finding out about the origins of the Trump-Russia probe, and of shirking their duty as watchdogs for the public.
“Normally the media would be interested in letting the sunshine in and finding out what the truth is,” Barr said in an interview with CBS News. “And usually the media doesn’t care that much about protecting intelligence sources and methods. But I do and I will.”
Barr was discussing his plans for declassification of documents related to the surveillance activities against the Trump campaign during the Russia investigation.
President Donald Trump ordered the heads of various government agencies, including the FBI and CIA, to provide materials to Barr. He also granted Barr the authority to declassify documents as he sees fit.
The decision generated heavy criticism from former intelligence officials, TV pundits and some journalists.
The New York Times, Politico, The Washington Post, and other outlets published stories that quoted former intelligence officials fretting that the declassification order would allow Barr to disclose the identities of confidential sources used in the Russia investigation. The Times article asserted that the CIA is concerned that the declassification order will lead to the unmasking of a sensitive Kremlin source close to Vladimir Putin. The Times reported that the source, which the CIA has cultivated for years, provided the information that Putin directed the election interference in 2016.

Mark Zuckerberg’s security chief accused of sexual harassment

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s personal security chief has been accused of sexual harassment and making racist and homophobic comments, according to a news report.
Citing legal letters, Business Insider reports that the security chief has been accused by two former employees of Zuckerberg’s household staff. The former employees are being represented by the high-profile law firm, The Bloom Firm.
The letters reportedly described pervasive discriminatory conduct and severe levels of sexual harassment and battery, including racist and homophobic comments about members of Zuckerberg’s staff and his wife, Priscilla Chan.
The security chief, Liam Booth, is a former Secret Service officer, according to his LinkedIn profile. He has been with the family’s charitable organization, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, since 2017.

Geraldo Rivera: AG Barr interview should have Comey, Clapper, Brennan 'quaking' in their boots
Fox News' Geraldo Rivera said it is clear Attorney General William Barr is determined to get to the bottom of the origins of the Russia probe, which should make some people very nervous.
Fox News correspondent at-large Geraldo Rivera is warning several Obama-era intelligence chiefs that they should be worried after Attorney General William Barr aired his concerns about the origins of the Mueller investigation in a new interview.
During an appearance on "Fox & Friends" Friday, Rivera said it's clear Barr wants to get to the bottom of the Russia probe's origins and that he has "his target" on some of the biggest names associated with it.
"If I were James Comey right now or James Clapper right now or John Brennan right now, I would be quaking in my boots," Rivera said.
"Why? Because the attorney general of the United States has set his target on you,” he said.

Watch out, folks! The Federalist’s Sean Davis is dragging the beaten hypothetical corpse of Robert Mueller through. He just took the man to the woodshed in his latest piece and rightfully so. The Russia investigation is over. Special Counsel Mueller is done. He’s done talking about it. He directed us to read the report that was compiled after two years of digging and to leave him alone. Oh, and Democrats, go ahead with impeachment wink* wink*. He twisted the words of his investigation’s findings on Russian collusion; none was found. But Mueller phrased it in a way that left it open for interpretation. And if we know anything about that, impeachment-obsessed Democrats will take it, run with it, and totally go off the rails—and they have. The Mueller report exonerated the Trump White House of Russian collusion. That’s a fact. Done. This circus is over. I wish it were over, but Mueller had to rehash and pour gasoline over the obstruction allegations, which the DOJ determined didn’t have enough to bring forward formal charges.

Only in Washington, D.C. can an official hold a press conference that makes matters even murkier.
Yet Special Counsel Robert Mueller did precisely that as he claimed he never sought to charge the president with obstruction due to a longstanding Office of Legal Counsel technicality that prohibited him from doing so.
Mueller’s statement is a flip-flop from what Attorney General William Barr suggested Mueller claimed during a March 5 meeting, at which several others were present, that Mueller’s decision not to move forward with charges was, in fact, not predicated upon OLC guidance.
The special counsel’s press conference not only set up a “he said, he said” battle between Barr and Mueller, it also tossed a political hot potato squarely into House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s lap.

Liberal law professor Alan Dershowitz was not impressed by Wednesday's public statement from Robert Mueller, calling it a revealing indication of the former Special Counsel's partisan rooting interests. Dershowitz, who has been a frequent critic of many fellow liberals' legal and investigatory tactics against President Trump, penned on op/ed for The Hill entitled, "Shame on Robert Mueller for Exceeding His Role." He writes that Mueller overstepped his bounds as a prosecutor, lambasting Mueller for having erred even more seriously than fellow ex-FBI Director James Comey -- adding that he can no longer defend Mueller as a nonpartisan actor:
Comey was universally criticized for going beyond his responsibility to state whether there was sufficient evidence to indict Clinton. Mueller, however, did even more. He went beyond the conclusion of his report and gave a political gift to Democrats in Congress who are seeking to institute impeachment proceedings against President Trump. By implying that President Trump might have committed obstruction of justice, Mueller effectively invited Democrats to institute impeachment proceedings. Obstruction of justice is a “high crime and misdemeanor” which, under the Constitution, authorizes impeachment and removal of the president...Until today, I have defended Mueller against the accusations that he is a partisan. I did not believe that he personally favored either the Democrats or the Republicans, or had a point of view on whether President Trump should be impeached. But I have now changed my mind. By putting his thumb, indeed his elbow, on the scale of justice in favor of impeachment based on obstruction of justice, Mueller has revealed his partisan bias. He also has distorted the critical role of a prosecutor in our justice system.
He concludes, "No prosecutor should ever say or do anything for the purpose of helping one party or the other. I cannot imagine a plausible reason why Mueller went beyond his report and gratuitously suggested that President Trump might be guilty, except to help Democrats in Congress and to encourage impeachment talk and action. Shame on Mueller for abusing his position of trust and for allowing himself to be used for such partisan advantage." One of the most common and pointed critiques of Mueller's unexpected performance is that he inverted the role of a prosecutor on the question of guilt vs. "exoneration." Here's a quote from Mueller's question-free press conference: “If we had had confidence that the president had clearly not committed a crime we would have said so.” Charles Cooke of National Review responds:
That’s not how it works in America. Investigators are supposed to look for evidence that a crime was committed, and, if they don’t find enough to contend that a crime was a committed, they are supposed to say “We didn’t find enough to contend that a crime was committed.” They are not supposed to look for evidence that a crime was not committed and then say, “We couldn’t find evidence of innocence." I understand that Mueller was in an odd position. I understand, too, that this wasn’t a criminal trial. But I don’t think those norms are rendered any less important by those facts...If a person doesn’t have enough evidence that someone committed a crime to contend that a crime was committed, he is obliged to presume his innocence. “Not exonerated” is not a standard in our system, and it shouldn’t be one in our culture, either.

Bernie Sanders campaigned for the Socialist Workers Party in the 1980 and 1984 presidential campaigns and was investigated by the FBI for his ties to the Marxist group.
Sanders has always played down the extent of his involvement with the party, which included radicals who praised the Soviet Union and Cuban communists, and has denied ever being a member. Asked in 1988 about his role as an SWP elector in 1980, he said: "I was asked to put my name on the ballot and I did, that’s true." In fact, his ties to the party are deep and enduring.
The 2020 Democratic presidential primary candidate and United States senator from Vermont, now 77, often scoffs at comparisons between his brand of self-described "democratic socialism" and communism. In recent years, he has said he is merely interested in having the United States look more like Sweden, a social democracy with a broad welfare state but a well-functioning private sector.

If you asked New Yorkers how they would feel about riding in subway cars made in China, I’m sure they would be as enthusiastic as they are about the New England Patriots. Most Americans are skeptical of Chinese companies owned or directed by the Beijing regime — and for good reason.
Chinese telecoms companies, like Huawei and ZTE, are state-directed instruments of national power used by the Communist Party to destroy international competitors, undermine US companies and steal intellectual property and trade secrets.
The Trump administration’s recent actions against Huawei to protect critical US systems and infrastructure highlight the serious nature of the threat. But China’s attempts to undermine US national and economic security aren’t limited to our nation’s telecommunications networks. The regime in Beijing has its sights set on another target that plays a critical role in the lives of millions of Americans living in urban centers like Washington, DC, and the Big Apple: our mass transit networks.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller breaks his silence on the Russia probe, further dividing Republicans and Democrats on the conclusions; Catherine Herridge reports on the reaction.
The stakes are higher than they've ever been in America, according to conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh, in regards to the Russia investigation and its origins.
"Now, it is an existential war — and the stakes, I cannot tell you how high they are for our country. I think the stakes, without question, are the highest they have ever been in my life. The stakes for the country, what kind of country we’re going to be going forward, have never been higher in my life," Limbaugh said on his radio show Thursday.

Limbaugh was reacting to Special Counsel Robert Mueller's press conference Wednesday that sparked impeachment talk and contradicted Attorney General William Barr.

DOJ watchdog: Former FBI official illegally leaked court docs, disclosed 'sensitive' information and took gift from media

The Justice Department's internal watchdog announced in an investigative summary released Wednesday that an unnamed former FBI deputy assistant director engaged in "misconduct," including leaking "sensitive" information to the media, violating federal law by disclosing sealed court records and taking a gift from someone in the media.
Nevertheless, the inspector general (IG) indicated, without explanation, that "prosecution of the DAD [deputy assistant director] was declined." The investigation's findings will be referred to the FBI for potential further action, the IG said.
The official became the second high-level FBI employee to be formally rebuked by the IG over media contacts seen as improper. Former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe was fired from the bureau in March 2018 by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions after an inspector general report revealed that he "lacked candor" when discussing his communications about federal probes with members of the media.
The IG first indicated in its June 2018 report on DOJ and FBI misconduct that "although FBI policy strictly limits the employees who are authorized to speak to the media, we found that this policy appeared to be widely ignored during the period we reviewed."
The IG, flagging what it called an apparent "cultural" problem at the bureau, said at the time it would announce the conclusion of multiple separate "investigations" into the matter at a later date. The Wednesday report appeared to be the opening salvo in those reports. A distinct, comprehensive IG report covering a variety of additional matters, including potential FBI surveillance abuses, is expected in a matter of weeks.
John Durham, the U.S. attorney in Connecticut, and John Huber, the U.S. attorney in Utah, are conducting independent parallel probes into the FBI and DOJ. Last week, President Trump authorized Attorney General William Barr to declassify and release materials pertinent to the reviews.
Inspector General Michael Horowitz is expected to release a report on FBI and DOJ misconduct in the coming weeks. (AP)

Robert Mueller’s ‘final statement’ was a disgraceful mess

Special prosecutor Robert Mueller’s statement upon the shuttering of his two-year investigation into the Trump campaign was weird even by the standards of the weirdness of the past couple of years. “Charging the president with a crime was not something we could consider,” he reported. Indeed, even pursuing that question, he added, would have been unconstitutional under long-standing Justice Department guidelines.
But then he said that if his office could have exonerated the president, it would have: “If we had confidence the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so.”
Granted, he said pretty much the same thing in the report he produced: “If we had confidence after a thorough investigation of the facts that the president clearly did not commit obstruction of justice, we would so state.”
His statement was only 8 minutes long. The report is 400 pages long. It matters what he chose to repeat from it and what he did not. He wanted the American people to hear him speak those words. He wanted to emphasize this point.

Mueller wanted the American people to hear him say he couldn’t dissipate the cloud. And by announcing that, he just spread it out over the president’s head again. This is why his peculiar locutions and soothsayer ambiguity represent a terrible failure of his mission as a public servant in this case.
He hasn’t clarified. He has muddied.

Sarah Sanders: Attorney general will decide if James Comey gets arrested for treason

The Trump administration may yet prosecute one of the president's chief critics: former FBI Director James Comey.
During a broader discussion Sunday about the president's declassification order related to the Russia investigation, "Meet the Press" host asked White House press secretary Sarah Sanders what Trump expects will come out of it.
"Does he expect criminal charges? Does he expect — he's accused James Comey of treason. Does he expect Jim Comey to be arrested?" Todd asked.
Sanders said the decision will be left to Attorney General William Barr.
"Again, we're going to let the attorney general make that determination as he gets to the conclusion of this investigation," Sanders replied.
"We certainly expect the people that were responsible and that were part of this unprecedented obstruction and corruption at the FBI, those people should certainly be held responsible and be held accountable, and the president expects that to take place," she added.
The interview followed Trump's claim that certain leaders in the bureau, including Comey, committed "treason" by trying to "take down" his campaign.

For centuries, the Great Wall of China kept out invaders.
Now, the country’s rulers are counting on a “Great Firewall of Regulation’’ to block social media and the internet as China prepares for the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, the Sunday Times of London reports.
At least 280 demonstrators seeking democracy were shot dead by Chinese troops on June 4, 1989. Some reports put the figure as high as 10,454.

Remember folk expressions about the wisdom of being careful? “Look before you leap.” “Measure twice, cut once.” “Don’t go off half-cocked.” All of this should go double for online culture. Instead lives are being destroyed over misleading, unfair, or just plain false accusations.
People are being turned into public enemies or even fired after being framed for racism, homophobia or other perceived social crimes. Others are casting themselves as victims of hate in order to line their pockets. These days anyone with a phone in his hand can be P.T. Barnum. And people who congratulate themselves for being unusually tolerant, kind-hearted and impervious to misinformation are the leaders of frenzied online mobs who are pitchforking innocent people.
Fake news is bad enough. Fake outrage is even worse.

As most Americans spent the weekend celebrating our exceptional nation, and those who sacrificed everything to protect its freedoms and opportunities, Democrats like Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris crisscrossed the country, denouncing the very system that has given hope and opportunity to millions over the past two centuries.
Instead of embracing our free enterprise system, Democrats are pushing greater government control of our economy and our lives, complete with higher taxes and regulatory regimes that will undermine our liberty and do nothing to solve the nation’s problems.
DEMOCRATS' UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE PROPOSALS ARE 'IMMORAL,' MELISSA FRANCIS SAYS
At the same time, they ignore the tough issues, like why our public schools are such a disaster for minority kids even though we spend more per pupil than almost any other country, or why spending a trillion dollars each year on welfare and health-related benefits for low-income Americans is not moving the needle on poverty.
Democrats are not interested in reforming our schools or our welfare system. Instead, they want to convince Americans that they are victims – of greedy corporations, of racism, of sexism, and, ultimately, of an economic system that “unfairly” picks winners and losers.
Even though paying women differently for equal work has been illegal since 1963, Kamala Harris is proposing a giant new compliance regimen that would require any company with over 100 workers to obtain an “equal pay certification” every two years.
It is a profound and sinister message that inevitably herds us onto the road to socialism which is, indeed, where we are heading today.

Although British leaders have failed to find a consensus on how to make Brexit work, Sunday's European elections seemed to prove that Brits still at least agree that they want Brexit. Nigel Farage, a leading force behind Brexit who left politics shortly after the successful 2016 referendum, returned about seven weeks ago with his new Brexit Party to try and get the process back on track.
Despite its infancy, the Brexit Party won 31.6 percent of the vote on Sunday. The Liberal Democrats came in second and Labour came in third, while the Conservative Party, the current one in government, came in an embarrassing fifth place.
