Keep up the pressure, and Venezuelan socialism will fall

by Adolfo Franco | March 01, 2019 12:03 AM

As a Cuban American who survived the horrors of communism and went on to work on Latin American policy issues for many years, I was moved when I watched Vice President Mike Pence bring hope to the Venezuelan people during his Monday meeting with the country's interim president, Juan Guaido.

In his remarks to the Lima Group in Colombia, Pence made clear that the United States continues to stand with the Venezuelan people and rejects Nicolas Maduro's Cuban-backed socialism.

Pence outlined a variety of concrete actions to be taken against the illegitimate Maduro regime in his speech that moved forward the cause of freedom and democracy in Venezuela. He announced the U.S. will send an additional $56 million in aid to partners in the region who are supporting the Venezuelan people. He said the U.S. would impose sanctions on additional Venezuelan officials who are loyal to Maduro's dictatorship.

These are just the latest in a long line of decisions the Trump administration has made in support of restoring democracy in Venezuela.

On Jan. 23, President Trump officially recognized the president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Juan Guaido, as the interim president of the country. This made the U.S. the first country in the world to recognize Guaido. In the following weeks, at least 50 other governments joined us in recognizing Guaido as Venezuela's true and democratic leader. That's leadership.

The Obama administration did very little to address the crisis in Venezuela, choosing to issue just one executive order and seven sanctions and blocking many others — a decision that helped Maduro stay in power. On top of that, the Obama administration empowered the Cuban communist regime, which has made Venezuela into a client state.

President Trump, fresh off negotiations in Vietnam with North Korea, dove into a wide-ranging interview on Fox News Thursday night where he explained why he decided to walk away from talks with Kim Jong Un.

The commander-in-chief told Fox News’ Sean Hannity that his conversation with Kim “didn’t quite work out” and the two world leaders “didn’t sign anything.”

While Trump sought a complete denuclearization, North Korea only wanted to “de-nuke certain areas,” the president explained, adding that he was reluctant to ease sanctions.

TRUMP CUTS SHORT NORTH KOREA SUMMIT AFTER DISPUTE OVER SANCTIONS: ‘SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO WALK’

After Hannity made reference to Trump’s book, “The Art of the Deal,” the president said, “you have to be prepared to walk.”

“And this just wouldn’t have been good for our country,” Trump said. “And, frankly, he could look at it the same way. Maybe he can look at it the same way.”

The president also slammed Democrats for the timing of the hearing while he was in Vietnam with Kim.

“Well, I think maybe more than anything else, the fact that they held it today where I’m working on something that is very, very important for the world, not only our country, for the world, was really inappropriate,” Trump said. “The Democrats, the hatred is so incredible, and they couldn’t help themselves, and that’s the way it is.”

Fox News’ Brian Flood and Alex Pappas contributed to this report.

DUBLIN — Facebook’s lead regulator in the European Union expects to conclude the first of seven investigations into the company’s use of personal data this summer and the remainder by the end of the year, Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner said on Thursday.

The commissioner’s office last year launched three investigations into aspects of a massive cyberattack in which hackers stole login codes that allowed them to access nearly 50 million Facebook accounts, including 3 million in Europe.

Since then it has launched a separate probe into “a large number of other breaches,” including Facebook’s disclosure in December that a bug may have exposed private photos of up to 6.8 million users.

Amb. Nikki Haley: American foreign aid should only go to our friends

OPINION - By Amb. Nikki Haley | Fox News

Nikki Haley on her time at the United Nations
Outgoing U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley reflects on her time working at the United Nations and her relationship with President Trump.

In December 2017, President Donald Trump courageously announced that the United States would officially recognize the truth that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, and that we would move our embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

Shortly afterward, the United Nations General Assembly gathered to give its opinion on this sovereign U.S. decision. Before the vote, as America’s UN Ambassador, I warned that the American people would “take names” of who was with us and who was against us.

A large majority of countries voted against America that day. There was no immediate consequence for doing so. But that doesn’t mean we didn’t take names. For countries who consistently trash America at the United Nations, there must be consequences, or there will be no changes in their behavior.

ANTI-ISRAEL CONTENT EXPOSED IN UN AGENCY'S SCHOOL TEXTBOOKS, AS LAWMAKERS DECRY 'SYSTEMATIC HATRED'

In fact, I did more than take names. My team at the U.S. Mission to the UN compiled an exhaustive research book on every country. We looked at how much foreign aid we give to each country, and how often they vote against us in the UN. The results were eye-opening.

Oxon Hill, MD – Susan B. Anthony List president Marjorie Dannenfelser emphasized the importance of human dignity at the 2019 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) Thursday morning and argued that “to make America great again, Roe must go; abortion must end.”

She reminded the crowd of the history of the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion.

Dannenfelser called the ruling “a profound betrayal of America’s foundational promises,” adding that, “in just one fateful day, that decision and its companion decision Doe v. Bolton swept away every single law in this nation protecting unborn children.”

President Trump walked away from negotiations with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un after the two couldn’t strike a deal on denuclearization, but South Korea hailed the Vietnam summit for making “meaningful progress.”

“It is regrettable that President Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un were unable to reach complete agreement,” Kim Eui Keum, a spokesman for South Korean President Moon Jae-in, said Thursday.

The spokesman said the two leaders made “more meaningful process” by building on their relationship and added that Trump’s commitment to keep the dialogue open with the regime is an optimistic development.

At Hanoi summit, China’s Xi saw a president willing to walk away: Gordon Chang

By Edmund DeMarche | Fox News

President Trump may have hit a roadblock when North Korea's Kim Jong Un refused to meet his demands at Thursday's Hanoi summit, but Trump’s decision to walk away could serve to rattle China’s Xi Jinping.

Gordon Chang, an expert on the region and author of “The Coming Collapse of China,” argued that what on the surface looked like a diplomatic stalemate could in fact be a diplomatic coup for Trump when it comes to North Korea's neighbor.

TRUMP CUTS SHORT NORTH KOREA SUMMIT AFTER DISPUTE OVER SANCTIONS: 'SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO WALK'

“I think this is a moment of reassessment for China,” Chang said.

Trump announced overnight that there’d be no deal in Vietnam because Kim was “unprepared” to fully denuclearize in exchange for the full removal of U.S.-led sanctions. Trump held a press conference where he said, “Sometimes you have to walk.”

Chang told Fox News that Trump also showed Beijing that he is not afraid to walk away from a bad deal amid trade talks and, in doing so, put added pressure on Xi, whose popularity appears to be waning due to the country’s economic stagnation. Chang said Xi has found himself in a “no win” situation: either he agrees to abandon the country’s “selfish” model or he continues to watch the economy suffer.

When I comment on articles about socialism on Facebook or web sites like Christianity Today or Patheos, I often get the response that socialism is just sharing and I wonder where they got such an idea. After all, if you read the writings of the followers of Saint-Simon, Marx, Lenin, Stalin or Mao, none of them mention sharing.

OTTAWA—A political firestorm surrounding Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau became more damaging Wednesday, as his ex-justice minister accused his top aides of repeatedly pressuring her to drop the prosecution of a global engineering and construction firm.

The testimony delivered by Jody Wilson-Raybould to a parliamentary committee offered the most detailed version yet of events fueling a scandal that risks upending Mr. Trudeau’s re-election effort later this year. She said that between September and December, she and...

To guard against fatal conceit, triumphant Roman generals famously were warned during celebrations that “thou art mortal.” Michael Cohen is about to provide a far more cinematic reminder to Donald Trump.

The president is in Vietnam trying to make a historic no-nukes deal with North Korea, but his feet of clay will be the sole subject of Cohen’s three days of congressional testimony.

Lest there be doubt that blood will flow, reports emerged before Cohen began testifying Tuesday that he would accuse Trump of committing crimes since he became president.

What a tease! If you were selling tickets to a hanging, or hoping to lure a big television audience for partisan purposes, you couldn’t ask for a better headline.

Late last night, Michael Cohen's opening statement -- as prepared for today's testimony before the House Oversight Committee -- was released online. It spanned 20 pages, and it was packed with strikingly negative commentaries, anecdotes and assertions about President Trump. I read all of it, carefully considering both the 'believability' of the allegations, as well as the motives of the alleger. Having watched hours of testimony today, I believe my initial tweeted thoughts have stood up pretty well. After describing Cohen's words as "extraordinarily negative" and very blunt," I offered this analysis:

Facebook boasted of buying Instagram to kill the competition: sources

By Josh Kosman

Facebook may be in for a fight with the feds over Instagram that’s been brewing for a long time.

The Federal Trade Commission — which on Tuesday launched a new task force with the power to undo tech deals previously approved by the feds — seriously weighed an attempt to block Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram more than six years ago, The Post has learned.

Driven by concerns about Facebook’s fast-growing dominance among social networks, the FTC in 2012 contemplated filing a lawsuit contesting the $1 billion hookup — widely viewed as one of the most successful tech mergers in history, two sources with close knowledge of the deliberations told The Post.

The Tea Party is ten years old. Here's what it's accomplished and why defeating socialism is next on its agenda

OPINION - By Jenny Beth Martin | Fox News

FILE -- A Tea Party rally (REUTERS/Gary Cameron)

It was ten years ago today that the first nationwide tea party protest took place, as everyday Americans reacted to TARP (the Troubled Asset Relief Program) and the permanent bailout culture Washington, D.C. was advancing. On February 27, 2009, more than 35,000 people organized events in nearly 50 cities.

The movement grew quickly, as more and more Americans came to understand the truism that Washington’s solution – regardless of the underlying problem – is always more, and larger government.

Less than two months later, on April 15, 2009, a second round of rallies took place – this time in 850 cities, with more than a million protesters in attendance.

CHARLIE KIRK: AMERICANS MUST WAKE UP AND FIGHT AGAINST THE SOCIALIST MOVEMENT THAT’S ALREADY WELL UNDERWAY

We were not typical political protesters. In fact, the vast majority of protesters had never been to a rally or protest or public political event before. We voted in elections, but virtually none of the protesters in 2009 had ever taken to the streets before.

From our origins as a protest movement, we came to fill a critical void in Washington – namely, that of the Constitution’s spokesperson on Capitol Hill.

Senate Democrats blocked the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act Monday evening, which, under the threat of prison time, would have forced doctors to provide medical care to babies born alive in a failed abortion.

The bill, which was sponsored by Republican Sen. Ben Sasse (Neb.) and cosponsored by 49 GOP senators, failed by a vote of 53-44. Only three Democrats voted with Republicans: Sens. Bob Casey Jr. (Pa.), Joe Manchin (W.Va.), and Doug Jones (Ala.). Three Republicans were not present at the vote over flight delays and scheduling issues, including Sens. Kevin Cramer (N.D.), Tim Scott (S.C.), and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska).

The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act would have required that "any health care practitioner present" at the time of a birth "exercise the same degree of professional skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of the child as a reasonably diligent and conscientious health care practitioner would render to any other child born alive at the same gestational age."

The bill, which exempted the mother involved in the birth from prosecution, also would have required practitioners to "ensure that the child born alive is immediately transported and admitted to a hospital." It prescribed a possible term of imprisonment of up to five years for violations, not including penalties for first-degree murder that could have applied. (FoxNews.com)

President Trump slammed Democrats for the vote.

BARCELONA—American officials inserted themselves into the telecom industry’s biggest trade fair to slam Huawei Technologies Co.—one of the event’s main sponsors—as “duplicitous and deceitful” and to warn other governments they won’t be able to use U.S. aid to buy the Chinese company’s gear.

The Trump administration sent a large delegation of senior officials from the State, Defense and Commerce departments, as well as the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, to make its case against Huawei directly to more than...

A U.S. delegation at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week is trying to dissuade European telecommunication firms from investing in Huawei’s 5G cellular technology, saying it could be "potentially compromised by the Chinese government.” Huawei, meanwhile, is on its own campaign to put those concerns at rest. Tucker Carlson: How dumb, arrogant Ocasio-Cortez became the boss of the Democratic Party

OPINION - By Tucker Carlson | Fox News

Tucker: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the leader of the Democratic party

Republicans have described Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., as the leader of her party, the boss of the Democratic Party. And there's a reason that they are saying that -- because she is. She said so herself while discussing her budget-busting "Green New Deal" in an interview on Friday.

"Oh, it's unrealistic," she said, mocking her detractors. "Oh, it's vague. Oh, it doesn't address this little minute thing," Ocasio-Cortez said. "And I'm like, 'You try. You do it.' Because you're not. Because you're not. So, until do you it, I'm the boss. How about that?"

She IS the boss.

It's a measure of how cowardly impassive everyone has become all of a sudden that a chorus of right-thinking Democrats hasn't told this idiotic windbag to be quiet and take a seat. Don't talk until you learn something. But of course nobody has done that they are all too afraid of her.

Fallout from George Pell case the latest blow in Vatican’s crisis

As the “all-out battle” against the sexual abuse crisis in the Vatican deepens after George Pell’s guilty verdict, here’s how the Vatican reacted.

George Pell found guilty of historical child sex abuse charges

The Vatican said today it has the “utmost respect” for the justice system following the “painful news” of the conviction of Australian Cardinal George Pell for child sex crimes.

“We reiterate the utmost respect for Australian judicial authorities. In the name of this respect, we now await the outcome of the appeal process,” Vatican spokesman Alessandro Gisotti said, reading out a prepared statement.

Pell, one of Pope Francis’ closest advisers, has been found guilty of sexually assaulting two choirboys, becoming the most senior Catholic cleric ever convicted of child sex crimes.

An Australian jury unanimously found Pell guilty in December on one count of sexual abuse and four counts of indecent assault against two boys at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne in the 1990s.

A wide-ranging suppression order from the presiding judge had prevented the media from reporting even the existence of court proceedings, but the order was lifted on Tuesday.

George Pell found guilty of child sex abuse: ‘You’re a monster’

It was a Sunday in 1996 when two choirboys stole off to sneak a sip of church wine. George Pell, still in his robes, caught them.

George Pell found guilty of historical child sex abuse charges

Cardinal George Pell has been found guilty of child sex abuse and is facing a significant jail term after a sensational trial in Melbourne.

The third most powerful man in the Vatican and Australia’s most senior Catholic has been found guilty of raping one choirboy and molesting another in Melbourne’s St Patrick’s Cathedral 22 years ago.

A jury delivered the unanimous verdict on December 11 in Melbourne’s county court, but the result was subject to a suppression order because of a secret second trial involving another two accusers — which has since collapsed — and could not be reported until now.

Chief Judge Peter Kidd said Pell, 77, would be remanded in custody after a pre-sentence hearing on Wednesday. He is facing a maximum 50 year prison term and is likely to be sentenced within the next fortnight.

“This is in no way a sign of the sentence Cardinal Pell will face,” Judge Kidd said about his decision to grant Pell short reprieve.

Pell, flanked by his minders and police, was accosted by members of the public as he left court using a walking stick, following the verdict this morning.

“You’re a monster … burn in hell, Pell” one person yelled.

“You’re a disgrace.”

Ex-DEA agent calls El Chapo's drug cartel one of the most 'well-organized criminal entities we've ever encountered'

Former Drug Enforcement Administration special agent Jack Riley told Hill.TV on Monday that drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán ran one of the "most well-organized" criminal entities the DEA ever encountered.

"He's a mass murderer, but he's also one heck of a corporate CEO," Riley, author of "Drug Warrior: Inside the Hunt for El Chapo and the Rise of America's Opioid Crisis," told hosts Buck Sexton and Krystal Ball on "Rising." "His cartel, the Sinaloa Cartel, which he built was really on top for over 20 years, and even today is still holds most of the drug markets here in the United States, and overseas."

"He was a logistics genius. He was the guy that really fathered the use of tunnels under the border and under the fence," he continued.

"He, quite frankly, was one of the most vicious human beings I've ever run across in my career," Riley said. "I think his organization may be one of the most vicious, well-financed, well-organized criminal entities we've ever encountered."

Guzmán was found guilty earlier this month in a New York court on drug-trafficking, weapons and money-laundering charges.

He faces life without parole for an organized crime conviction, and up to seven life sentences for drug convictions.

Illiteracy is a national emergency unfolding across America, and it's only getting worse

OPINION - By Raymond Arroyo | Fox News

I once walked into an inner-city school cafeteria for an author visit and was amazed by the scene. A donor had gifted copies of my latest “Will Wilder” book to each of the children in this particular middle school. As I entered the cafeteria, nearly all them were embracing their books and some were caressing the volumes.

“What are they doing?” I asked the principal standing in the doorway.

“Oh, most of these kids don’t have books at home,” she explained to me. “That’s probably their first one – and they’re happy to have them.”

Scores of author visits later, I discovered that the scene was not an anomaly. By every measure we have a literacy crisis in America, and it’s on track to worsen.

Sixty-four percent of all eighth-grade students are unable to read proficiently, according to the National Assessment of Education Progress’ latest report. Eighty-two percent of black students and 77 percent of Hispanic students are not reading proficiently.

While people argue over the president declaring the situation at the border a national emergency, they ignore the national emergency in every town and school district in America.

More than 30 million Americans cannot read or write above a third-grade level. The strong correlations between illiteracy and incarceration, unemployment and suppressed GDP are well established. Eighty-five percent of the juveniles in the court system are functionally illiterate, as are 60 percent of prison inmates.

If you feel that this has no effect on you, think again. Each of those inmates costs you, the taxpayer dearly. In California, by the state's own estimates, they spend more than $81,000 to incarcerate each prisoner, each year. And the amount to imprison juveniles is nearly double, costing taxpayers more than $148,000 annually according to The Justice Policy Institute.

And if a citizen cannot read, how can he or she engage in our system of government, or think deeply about the issues that we face as a society? Their inability to read has written them out of a large part of our national story.

While the illiteracy statistics are overwhelming and the consequences dire, this is a national emergency that we don’t need the president or Congress to solve for us. If we all do our part, in large ways and small, we can craft a story that truly includes all of us – one that everyone will be able to read again and again.

Jussie Smollett news coverage was just one of many media failures

OPINION - By Dan Gainor | Fox News

Howard Kurtz: Why journalists keep falling into the Smollett trap
'MediaBuzz' host Howard Kurtz weighs in on the mainstream news media's reaction to the Chicago Police Department press conference on 'Empire' actor Jussie Smollett's charges for falsely filing a hate crime report.

New York Yankees Hall of Famer Yogi Berra once made a reference to “deja vu all over again.” The media frenzy over actor Jussie Smollett – who Chicago police say lied when he claimed he was assaulted in a hate crime – was just one of many media failures this past week.

News junkies had barely recovered from the media falsely labeling the Covington Catholic High School boys as racists. Then came the Smollett claims. Chicago residents survived the polar vortex only to be hit with a hoax hurricane.

Now the storm has passed (sort of). There’s still the court case and few thousand more think pieces, but journalists are eager to move on. (There’s also this laughable video of ABC’s Robin Roberts interviewing Smollett in a fictional scene on “Empire” where she asked him tougher questions than she did in real life.)

Despite not liking when people lurch into hyperbole, I will make this broad statement: Andrew McCabe’s arrogant performance on "60 Minutes" last Sunday enabled by a dormant interviewer, Scott Pelley, brought to America the fact that employees of the federal government acted at minimum irresponsibly and possibly illegally because of their own interests. It also brought our press to a low not reached in my lifetime. If you were not horrified, then you did not watch or you are a blind ideologue when it comes to Trump.

There were so many astonishing moments in this interview it is impossible to cover them in one column. Let’s hit some highlights that will define the gross malfeasance of Andrew McCabe.
