Why Trump starts 2020 poised for reelection

President Donald Trump

Here we are: 2020, with Election Day just 11 months off and President Trump looking like an ever better bet for reelection.

Trump’s strength has three main sources: the success of his economic policies, his record of doing (or at least trying to do) exactly what he promised back in 2016, and the unhinged nature of his opposition.

The president’s economic impact can’t be doubted: After years of slow Obama-era growth, the United States was looking at a likely recession when Trump took office. But his immediate reversal of his predecessor’s job-killing policies, starting with a major deregulation drive, was transformative: Businesses no longer had to assume that Washington would keep the hits coming in the form of ever-rising taxes, energy costs, legal risks, workforce mandates and so on. Then came the Trump tax cuts, encouraging employers to invest and expand.

Sure, the president’s trade wars have made for major uncertainty in a few sectors — but, especially when it comes to China, Americans recognize that Washington needed to stand up for basic fairness and the rule of law. Beijing’s incessant cheating has to end, or the rest of the world will suffer — especially the working classes.

As Democrats lose their grip on the Rust Belt, Trump takes the lead

by Kaylee McGhee
| December 31, 2019 10:50 AM

President Trump’s approval ratings have continued their upward climb, reaching 50% this past week and putting him ahead of every top Democratic candidate, according to a new national survey of 865 likely voters.

The poll, conducted online by Zogby Analytics, contains another wake-up call for Democrats — Trump is gaining ground among minorities and independents. And although 48% of those surveyed still disapprove of his performance, the president’s numbers are better than they’ve ever been before, in part because the economy continues to improve, said pollster Jonathan Zogby.

The majority of minority and independent voters still “somewhat disapprove” of Trump, according to the survey. But among vulnerable voters, such as those who lost a job, those who are afraid of losing a job, those who have gone without food for 24 hours, etc., Trump’s ratings are significantly higher.

Beware of the smart device: Ways to stay private and safe

NEW YORK — Did someone invite a spy into your home over the holidays? Maybe so, if a friend or family member gave you a voice-controlled speaker or some other smart device.

It’s easy to forget, but everything from internet-connected speakers with voice assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa to television sets with built-in Netflix can be always listening — and sometimes watching, too. As with almost all new technology, installing such devices means balancing privacy risks with the conveniences they offer.

The research firm IDC estimates worldwide shipments of 815 million smart speakers, security cameras and other devices in 2019, up 23% from 2018. Many of the sales are for gifts.

You could sidestep the risks altogether by returning the devices right away. But if you decide to keep them — and the artificial intelligence behind them — there are a few things you can do to minimize their eavesdropping potential.

THE SPEAKERS LISTEN … AND WATCH

Smart speakers such as Amazon’s Echo and Google Home let you check weather and appointments with simple voice commands. Fancier versions come with cameras and screens.

Trump blames Iran for US Embassy attack in Iraq, vows to hold regime 'fully responsible'

By Ronn Blitzer | Fox News

Trump says Iran will be held 'fully responsible' for orchestrating attack on US Embassy in Iraq
The president responds to Iraqi protesters storming the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad in response to airstrikes; Rich Edson reports from the State Department.

President Trump accused Iran of orchestrating the attack at the U.S. Embassy compound in Iraq on Tuesday and vowed to hold the regime "fully responsible."

Dozens of Iraqi Shiite militia supporters had gained entry to the compound in Baghdad after reportedly smashing down a gate and storming inside. It came amid protests over U.S. airstrikes, though Trump stressed that the strikes were in response to the killing of an American contractor.

CROWD STORMS US EMBASSY COMPOUND IN BAGHDAD, GUNSHOTS HEARD, REPORT SAYS

"Iran killed an American contractor, wounding many. We strongly responded, and always will," Trump tweeted Tuesday morning. "Now Iran is orchestrating an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Iraq. They will be held fully responsible. In addition, we expect Iraq to use its forces to protect the Embassy, and so notified!"

Revellers heading to the Sydney fireworks tonight have been given a bizarre warning to delay their journeys into the CBD tonight as bushfire smoke creates hazardous conditions.

After days of heated debate over whether or not Sydney should continue with its annual New Year’s Eve fireworks display, a decision was made yesterday to let the display go ahead, despite Greater Sydney being one of 10 regions across New South Wales and the ACT to be under a total fire ban today.

Before 2pm this afternoon, eight fires around NSW were burning at emergency level, with seven at watch and act level, while some 85 other blazes continued to burn across the state.

The City of Sydney has issued a warning to those attending the fireworks that bushfire smoke has caused the air quality to plummet to poor in Sydney, and anyone with a breathing condition should try and “delay coming into the city early”.

Why Adam Schiff doesn’t want anyone talking to the whistleblower

By Betsy McCaughey

The truth behind House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff’s role in engineering President Trump’s impeachment may soon come out. Judicial Watch, a nonprofit group promoting government transparency, is suing to get the whistleblower’s e-mails.

That’s good news. Because no matter what comes of Trump’s Senate trial, Schiff should be held accountable for his devious methods.

The public also needs the truth about the so-called whistleblower. Real whistleblowers deserve to be treated like heroes. But Eric Ciaramella — the man Judicial Watch and many media accounts have identified as the whistleblower and who doesn’t deny it — is no hero.

To dignify Ciaramella with the term “whistleblower” misrepresents what he did. Sure, he filed what is technically called a whistleblower complaint. But he had no firsthand knowledge of Trump’s controversial July 25 phone call or motivations. Every allegation in the complaint begins with “I learned from multiple US officials,” or “multiple officials told me,” or “officials with direct knowledge informed me.” Just gossip. He never names any sources. Ciaramella acted as the anti-Trumpers’ front man. As for courage, not an ounce: He is cowering from public view.

Elizabeth Warren's fibbing is forming a pattern

by Washington Examiner
| December 28, 2019 12:00 AM

Maybe Democrats have decided that, in the era of President Trump, honesty is no longer required. Or maybe Elizabeth Warren is just too insecure to tell the truth about her own life.

Whatever the reason, the Massachusetts senator has built her campaign on a foundation of exaggerations and misrepresentations.

It's common knowledge by now that Warren, one of the top four 2020 Democratic presidential contenders, identified as a Native American, despite being somewhere between 0.1% and 3% Native American and having zero experience in tribal life. If only her misrepresentations began and ended there.

Ask her constituents in Massachusetts and they may remind you that the senator also fibbed when she promised to serve her full Senate term if reelected in 2018. Her 2020 presidential run began a few weeks after she won that election.

Justin Haskins: Radical plans by Democratic presidential candidates would destroy our economy and freedom

OPINION - By Justin Haskins | Fox News

Half of likely voters reject a presidential candidate who identifies as a socialist
Author of ' Socialism Is Evil' Justin Haskins reacts to the latest numbers.

In the last century, the Democratic Party was known as the party of liberals – but a staunch opponent of socialists and communists.

No more. Radicals have taken over the party and called for policies that would make Karl Marx smile.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., proudly calls himself a socialist as he campaigns for the Democratic presidential nomination. Fellow socialist Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., also seeks the Democratic nomination while pretending she is a capitalist, just as she pretended for years that she was a Native American.

JUSTIN HASKINS: ELIZABETH WARREN IS PRETENDING TO BE SOMETHING SHE’S NOT – LET’S NOT FALL FOR HER MASQUERADE

There are plenty of reasons to believe that President Trump will be reelected in 2020 and that Republicans will hold onto their Senate majority and gain House seats. But anything can happen in politics – so supporters of individual liberty and free markets need to be armed with as much information as possible to refute the far-left campaign rhetoric Democratic candidates are engaging in.

Reaction and analysis from Fox News contributor Judith Miller.

What a difference a decade makes.

In 2010, we got the Arab Spring and Obamacare. Neither turned out as well as we had hoped.

We got iPads, iPhone 4 and Angry Birds. Tech has definitely moved on.

LEE EDWARDS: 4 MOST IMPORTANT LESSONS OF COLD WAR – AND WHY THEY ARE IMPORTANT TODAY

What about America’s foreign policy? It had its ups and downs. Here is a list of the top 10 foreign policy hits and misses of the decade.

1. Hit. Sticking it out in Afghanistan (2010)

After coming into office, one of President Obama’s first big foreign policy challenges was to decide what to do about the war in Afghanistan. In 2010, he surged U.S. forces, turning around a rapidly deteriorating situation. Equally important, he started a transition from an American-led effort to building an Afghan military that could take up the responsibility for defending the Afghan people. President Trump has followed through. and after this next drawdown, U.S. force levels in Afghanistan will be about what they were when Obama left office.

Folks had a hard time distinguishing between “Showman Trump,” who made all kinds of outrageous public comments for all kinds of reasons, and “Serious Trump,” who delivered sound decisions and policies in America’s interests.

Adding up the plus and minuses, it is hard to argue the U.S. isn’t better off than when the decade began. While Trump doesn’t earn Obama’s style points, he has done more to keep America free, safe and prosperousand it doesn’t look like impeachment is slowing him down.

An "extreme" heatwave sweeping through the south of Australia today and tomorrow is tipped to create dangerous bushfire conditions right across the nation.

Today, temperatures are set to soar into the 40s across Victoria with a total fire ban in place across the state and extreme fire danger ratings in most regions.

In NSW, dangerous fire weather and poor air quality are forecast as firefighters brace for deteriorating bushfire conditions ahead of New Year’s Eve.

Catastrophic bushfire conditions are also forecast in three South Australian districts will have firefighters on alert as the state swelters amid high heat and rising winds.

Tasmanians have been urged to remain alert to fire risks as the state faces 40C temperatures in southern and eastern areas.

And, in WA, a bushfire burning southeast of Perth has been upgraded to an emergency warning level after the blaze jumped containment lines.

Dan Gainor: 2019 was American journalism’s worst year ever – Here are 7 reasons why

OPINION - By Dan Gainor | Fox News

Howard Kurtz on media coverage of impeachment process
'MediaBuzz' host Howard Kurtz breaks down the media's portrayal of the Democrats' impeachment process versus the IG report.

American journalism experienced its worst year ever in 2019, marked by bias, hatred and incompetence in the left-wing media.

From coverage of the phony Russia collusion narrative, to the hit job on Covington Catholic High School students, to the media-led impeachment fiasco, the year was one of unparalleled bias.

The year was the “Cats” of journalism – filled with stars and promise, but ultimately both creepy and embarrassingly bad. (Those of you who just pictured NBC Political Director Chuck Todd dressed as a cat can thank me for that lasting “Memory.”)

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: MEDIA FEELS 'JUSTIFIED BY THE NOBLE END OF REMOVING' TRUMP

Unfortunately, we can expect journalism to get even worse in 2020, as the anti-Trump media do whatever they can to keep the president from being reelected.

As we end 2019, we can look back at these seven worst media failures:

Impeachment

President Trump’s impeachment wouldn’t have happened without an activist press leading the way. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said repeatedly she didn’t want to impeach Trump, knowing that the Republican-controlled Senate would never convict him and realizing the pointless exercise would hurt Democrats in the 2020 election.

Bit Democrats bowed to their most-strident supporters – journalists. This is why the news media celebrated the impeachment across nearly all outlets. And the allegedly neutral Washington Post political staff sent out a “Merry Impeachmas” tweet while they sat around with drinks, guacamole and smiles.

But now even some journalists realize they might have gone too far. Todd told the MSNBC audience that he was worried Trump would get out of jail free, just like O.J. Simpson: “I’m having a quick flashback to the O.J. trial,” he said.

Hatred of Trump

Several Recent Investigations Show Just How Little We Understand About Big Tech’s Collection Of Personal Data

Let’s consider three recent headlines about the impact of Big Tech. The question on the table is whether or not the American political system can even understand the power of Big Tech, let alone properly manage it. As we shall see, ignorance about the forces shaping our lives — from political elections to personal privacy to our national unity — is not bliss.

First, The Washington Post ran a piece on the controversy over micro-targeting — that is, the practice of using big data to take campaigning to the granular, i.e. individual, level. The story focused on Facebook, which has mostly resisted calls to ban micro-targeting in politics. (Google and Twitter assert that they have banned political micro-targeting, although one dreads the prospect of parsing through the nitty-digital details of such assertions.)

The Post quoted Alex Stamos, a former Facebook security chief, on the deleterious effect of micro-targeting: “Instead of two Americas, you’re potentially looking at hundreds of thousands of Americas. I don’t think our democracy can survive that kind of Balkanization of the electorate.”

If the Democrat establishment thought that their chances of ousting President Trump were slim a few months ago, the latest polls prove that their obstructionist agenda is utterly hopeless -- other than a contingent of radical leftists, Americans have officially lost any belief in the Democrats’ partisan impeachment sham.

Of course, there is a good reason why the Democrats are losing on impeachment -- the entire process has been unjust from the start. “They treated us very unfairly,” President Trump said during an event on Christmas eve. “They didn’t give us due process. They didn’t give us a lawyer. They didn’t give us anything. Now they come to the Senate and they want everything.”

The voters, it turns out, were not blind to the Democrat Party’s dirty tricks. According to a recent survey from Gallup, public support for impeachment has now dropped to 46 percent, down six percentage points since the start of the impeachment inquiry.

True Trump victories: A year-end review

President Trump’s accomplishments have continued to pile up this year, no matter what kind of coverage the media provides. (Associated Press) more ...

ANALYSIS

The news media is not keen on reporting positive news about President Trump and his administration. Yet Mr. Trump’s victories continue to pile up whether the press reports them or not. What follows is a small compendium of those significant and fact-driven victories, as reported in Inside the Beltway in the final weeks of 2019. Without further ado, a few recent examples:

• Oct. 16: Data from Moody’s Analytics, based on three different economic models, now predicts a bodacious win for President Trump in 2020.

Trump looks likely to cruise to reelection next year under three different economic models Moody’s Analytics employed to gauge the 2020 race. Barring anything unusual happening, the president’s Electoral College victory could easily surpass his 2016 win over Democrat Hillary Clinton, which came by a 304-227 count,” CNBC finance editor Jeff Cox writes in his analysis of the Moody’s prediction, which also finds Mr. Trump winning in 35 states, including such key locales as Pennsylvania and New Hampshire.

“If the economy a year from now is the same as it is today, or roughly so, then the power of incumbency is strong and Trump’s election odds are very good, particularly if Democrats aren’t enthusiastic and don’t get out to vote. It’s about turnout,” observes Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics.

Gregg Jarrett says McConnell should hold impeachment trial -- without Pelosi's OK

By Victor Garcia | Fox News

Gregg Jarrett says Mitch McConnell shouldn't subject himself to Nancy Pelosi's extortion
The Framers never envisioned that the speaker of the House would withhold the articles of impeachment from the Senate, says Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett.

Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett blasted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Friday for not sending the articles of impeachment to the Senate for trial and saying that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., should proceed with an impeachment trial without the Democratic leader's involvement.

"The framers never envisioned a stunt pulled by a speaker of the House like Nancy Pelosi holding onto articles of impeachment. Two decades ago it was sent over immediately, within minutes. There was a vote to convey and transmit it," Jarrett said on "Hannity." "The Constitution is actually silent about that. It doesn't say that the Senate has to wait until it's transmitted. It's simply a Senate rule."

OPINION

As institutions collapse, Americans need to renew faith in each other

The most important story of our soon-to-end decade is a radical decline in trust in once-trusted institutions in the United States — a social trend half a century in the making.

The church, the Supreme Court, small businesses and the police fared OK, though only the American military maintains high levels of trust and confidence. But according to Gallup, trust in most other major institutions matched or hit historic lows in 2019.

Only 8% of Americans trust television news; big business and the criminal justice system are at 10%; newspapers, 12%; banks, 13%; public schools, 13%; and the health care system, 15%. Probably to no one’s surprise, Congress fared the worst, managing a mere 4%.

Some of these institutions made catastrophic mistakes in the recent past. Think, for example, of investment banks’ failure to foresee the looming threat posed by their securitized gambling in the run-up to the Great Recession. Or consider the mainstream media’s serial blunders in response to the Trump phenomenon, most of them a product of an ideological determination to undo the results of 2016.

There is also a deeper, pervasive crisis of institutional collapse going back to Vietnam and Watergate that has to do with the failures of government — in war, in intelligence, in deficits, in health care websites, in disaster response.

Unlike other nations, where there is only the mob and the leadera crowd of powerless people appealing to the powerful for salvationthe United States has sustained itself time and again thanks to the spirit that drives us to link arms with our neighbors and solve problems for ourselves.

...

A nation where citizens spend hours yelling at strangers on the internet but don’t know the names of their neighbors to invite for Christmas Eve is a sad one, indeed.

...

If the idea of America is to survive for generations to come, we can’t respond to betrayals by institutions, at whatever level of community, by throwing up our hands. We can’t give up on our churches just because the pews are filled with sinners; on sports leagues filled with cheaters; or the government filled with idiots.

...

It’s those 435 people we ought to concentrate on bettering. Institutions can die. The Americans who must renew their purpose will come from within our communities. They might be your neighbors. They might be you.

A Thai navy SEAL who took part in the dramatic rescue of 12 boys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave in northern Thailand last year has died from a blood infection he contracted during the operation.

Petty Officer Beiret Bureerak had been receiving treatment, but his condition worsened, the Royal Thai Navy said in a statement on Friday.

Another rescuer, former navy diver Sergeant Saman Kuman, died during the rescue operation.

Wild Boars Academy’s coach Ekapol Chanthawong and 12 boys had gone to explore the Tham Luang caves in Chiang Rai province on June 23, 2018, when a rainy- season downpour flooded the cave system and trapped them underground.

No need for a Senate impeachment trial, says former Bush adviser Brad Blakeman

By Talia Kaplan | Fox News

No requirement or need for a Senate impeachment trial, Brad Blakeman says
Former Bush adviser Brad Blakeman makes the case for a dismissed trial against President Trump.

Nancy Pelosi's move to withhold from the Senate articles of impeachment against President Trump is stunning because the House speaker "has no leverage," said Brad Blakeman, who served as deputy assistant to President George W. Bush.

Blakeman, an adviser in the Bush-Cheney 2000 Presidential campaign, made the comment on “Fox & Friends” Thursday morning.

“[Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell did not nose his way into the impeachment process in the House and she has no standing to do that in the Senate,” he said.

The president tore into House Democrats overnight and into the morning over their handling of the impeachment process, calling them "hypocrites" and "liars" for allegedly seeking concessions in the Senate that Republicans were not afforded in the House -- and for hitting pause on impeachment after stressing the national security urgency of it all.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., in his committee's impeachment report, stated the president "will remain a threat to national security and the Constitution" if he remains in office – an argument generally used to bolster Democrats’ case for a swift impeachment process.

TRUMP CALLS DEMS 'LIARS!' FOR DEEMING HIM SECURITY THREAT - AND THEN PAUSING IMPEACHMENT

Despite this assessment, the impeachment process has stalled after Pelosi abruptly opted not to deliver articles of impeachment to the Senate, after the House adopted two articles alleging abuse of power and obstruction of Congress for Trump's actions involving Ukraine.

When House Speaker Nancy Pelosi abruptly announced in September that the House was moving forward with an official impeachment inquiry related to President Trump’s dealings with Ukraine, it left many long time Washington insiders scratching their heads. After all, since she picked up the gavel a year ago, Pelosi had been persistently pushing back against the hard left squad who were squawking for impeachment even before Inauguration Day, insisting that any legitimate impeachment effort would have to be bipartisan in nature.

A savvy politician, Pelosi is well aware of how the Clinton impeachment boomeranged on Republicans when they were in the majority — and that GOP impeachment effort was undertaken only after a lengthy and exhaustive investigation that documented clear violations of the law by the Chief Executive. After the failure of the long-running Mueller investigation to produce anything of value, the thin gruel of President Trump’s phone conversation with the president of Ukraine has never seemed any less than absurd as a basis for removing a United States President from office in accordance with the constitutional standard of “high crimes and misdemeanors.”

NY Post Columnist: We Should Investigate Why The New York Times Is Wrong All the Time

Someone mentioned this on social media. In fact, many have when it comes to The New York Times and others peddling caught peddling fake news. I mean it’s become abysmal since the 2016 election. Granted, a blind squirrel finds a nut. The publication can dole out some solid pieces—not doubt. The Upshot is a decent section, but the batting average isn’t good. And yes, it’s a liberal paper. I’m sure you all know this but there are some folks out there who think the NYT, MSNBC, and CNN are impartial sources of news. You almost have the chuckle a bit. Yet, when you get egg on your face for the 10,000thtime, maybe there needs to be an internal review. That’s what The New York Post’sMichael Goodwin suggested due to the paper’s serial failures while adding that Trump is Teflon. He will not be taken down by the snowflake brigade that infests so many newsrooms. He also added that if Democrats thought their liberal media allies will be able to drum up support for impeachment, they were sadly mistaken (via NY Post):

Backed by a press corps eager to get Trump, Pelosi felt confident to authorize the flimsy effort to remove the president from office. She assumed media bullhorns would push the public into her camp and that would win her Republican votes for a bipartisan takedown.

She certainly got the media support, but the public and the GOP aren’t following. Indeed, the harder that Reps. Adam Schiff and Jerry Nadler push and the louder the anti-Trump media scream, the more the public resists impeachment over the Ukraine piffle.
