US federal judge rules Syrian government was responsible for death of American journalist Marie Colvin

Fox News frontline exclusive: Fighting the Islamic State in Syria
A U.S. federal judge has determined that the Syrian government was responsible for the 2012 killing of American journalist Marie Colvin, 56, while she was covering the country's civil war.
Judge Amy Berman Jackson ruled late Wednesday that the government of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad targeted journalists during that country’s civil war with the objective of suppressing coverage.
She ordered the government to pay $302 million to Colvin’s family. Colvin, who was based in London, was covering the war out of a makeshift studio in Syria for the United Kingdom newspaper Sunday Times.
The court opinion said that the Syrian government "discovered that foreign journalists were broadcasting reports from a Media Center in Baba Amr" and "launched an artillery attack against it, for the purpose of killing the journalists inside."

A Democratic co-sponsor of a controversial Virginia bill that would repeal restrictions on third-trimester abortions is apologizing to her constituents for supporting the legislation, saying she didn’t read the bill or know how far it went.
The backpedal comes as Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam is defending himself amid fierce criticism that he suggested a child could be killed after birth in remarks a day earlier about the same legislation. And Virginia Democratic Del. Kathy Tran, the primary sponsor, released a video Thursday standing by the bill.
But in an email to her constituents on Wednesday, Del. Dawn Adams of Richmond said she didn’t fully understand the bill when she signed on to it as a co-sponsor.

I’ll never forget the first time I heard applause from hell.
I was listening to an audiotape of abortionist Martin Haskell giving a presentation at the 16th Annual Meeting of the National Abortion Federation Conference in 1992 in San Diego. Haskell was describing to his audience how to do a partial-birth abortion. These were his words:
“The surgeon then introduces large grasping forceps … through the vaginal and cervical canal … He moves the tip of the instrument carefully towards the fetal lower extremities -- and pulls the extremity into the vagina …The surgeon then uses his fingers to deliver the opposite lower extremity, then the torso, the shoulders, and the upper extremities. The skull lodges in the internal os. The fetus is oriented … spine up … The surgeon then takes a pair of blunt curved Metzenbaum scissors in the right hand. … the surgeon then forces the scissors into the base of the skull -- spreads the scissors to enlarge the opening. The surgeon then introduces a suction catheter into this hole and evacuates the skull contents.”
Haskell, having described these brutal details, shows his audience a video of himself doing one of these procedures. And at the end of the video, after the sound of the suction machine taking the brains out of the baby’s head, and the mother moaning, the audience erupts into applause.
That was applause from hell.

Ever since Roe v. Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992), the vast majority of states have said that any right to abortion exists only until the unborn child can survive outside the womb, and that abortion after viability is permissible only if necessary to preserve the life of the mother.
This sensible, merciful and civilized distinction arises from the understanding that killing an unborn baby who could survive outside the womb borders on infanticide. Only a handful of countries allow elective abortion after viability, including such human rights antagonists as China and North Korea.
But on January 22, 2019 – the 46th anniversary of Roe – New York state did the unthinkable: It legalized abortion well past viability, up until the very moment before the child’s birth. A mother need only convince a nurse to deem a late-term abortion “necessary” to protect her health – likely including (under existing judicial interpretation) her emotional well-being – and the abortion may proceed.

Deep freeze: Midwest struggles with deadly cold temperatures
A University of Iowa student has died after being found unresponsive on campus grounds early Wednesday as a polar vortex gripped the Midwest in arctic temperatures that have been linked to at least seven other deaths.
Gerald Belz, 18, was found behind an academic building on the Iowa City campus just before 3 a.m. by campus police, KCRG-TV reported. The pre-med student was rushed to a hospital, where he later died.

Oops — Facebook did it again: spying, cheating and playing fast and loose with privacy.
Apple says Team Zuckerberg grossly violated its trust with an app that lets the social media giant siphon users’ phone and web activity as a way for Facebook to spy on its competitors, TechCrunch reports.
A good chunk of the people who were paid up to $20 a month (plus referral fees) to install the privacy-obliterating app were teens. Facebook insists it got parental OKs for underage users; care to guess how many parents actually understood what was going on?

Italy’s nationalist-populist government is hailing new numbers that show immigration into the country has plummeted dramatically within months of the government taking power, due to its refusal to accept NGO rescue boats of migrants coming from Africa.
Il Giornale reports that official data show that in January 2018, 3,176 migrants landed on the Italian coast via boats. But in January 2019 that number was just 155.

"The data deny those who say that the Democratic Party had blocked the landings, we are doing more and better,” he said. "For the first time, returns are greater than arrivals".

National security adviser John Bolton warns of 'serious consequences' for those who attempt to 'subvert democracy and harm Guaido'; State Department correspondent Rich Edson reports.
Venezuela's Supreme Court Tuesday agreed to a prosecutor's request to prevent opposition leader Juan Guaido from leaving the country while the Socialist government conducts a criminal probe into his activities.
The high court, which is stacked with supporters of disputed president Nicolas Maduro, also blocked Guaido's financial accounts.
Attorney General Tarek William Saab told reporters the investigation was tied to unrest sparked by Guaido's decision to declare himself interim president last week in a direct challenge to Maduro's authority.
Guaido said outside the National Assembly building that he was aware of personal risks, but added, "Venezuela is set on change, and the world is clearly conscious of what's happening."

"I don't underestimate the threat of persecution at the moment," he added, "but here we are."

House Minority Whip Steve Scalise told Fox News' "Your World with Neil Cavuto" on Tuesday that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi needs to change her tone and start making "credible" compromises to avert another government shutdown over border wall funding.
Pelosi, D-Calif., on Monday invited President Trump to deliver the State of the Union address on Feb. 5, after refusing to allow him to appear in House chambers during the partial government shutdown. On Friday, both chambers of Congress passed a short-term spending bill to reopen the government through Feb. 15 -- but it includes no funding for a border wall.
"Nancy Pelosi said she wouldn't negotiate during the shutdown. OK, now the shutdown is over for the time being," Scalise told Cavuto. "Will she finally start be willing to put a dollar amount on the table, to say how much is she willing to put together to support securing the border?"
Scalise said that experts have called for more than $5 billion in wall funding, and that Democrats are playing politics. Earlier this month, U.S. Border Patrol chief Carla Provost told "Your World" that "we certainly do need a wall," and the president has touted the support for one from the national border patrol union at White House press briefings.

OTTAWA—Canada said Tuesday it received a formal request from the U.S. for the extradition of Huawei Technologies Co.’s chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou.
The formal extradition request comes after U.S. law-enforcement authorities unveiled Monday a sweeping set of criminal charges against Ms. Meng and Huawei. U.S. federal prosecutors accused Huawei of violating U.S. sanctions on Iran and of stealing trade secrets from a U.S. business partner, portraying the company as a serial violator of U.S. laws and global business practices.

The Trump administration unveiled a sweeping set of criminal charges against China’s Huawei Technologies Co. in its latest salvo against the telecom giant, with authorities unsealing a pair of indictments just days before U.S.-China trade talks are set to resume.
In the cases unsealed Monday, federal prosecutors accused Huawei of violating U.S. sanctions on Iran and of stealing trade secrets from a U.S. business partner, portraying the company as a serial violator of U.S. laws and global business practices.

Pressuring Maduro: Notes on John Bolton's legal pad hint at troop deployment
National Security Adviser John Bolton may have inadvertently revealed a potential next move by the Trump administration in the Venezuela crisis Monday when photographers captured a note on a legal pad that read: "5,000 troops to Colombia."
Sources tell Fox News that the White House is considering pre-positioning U.S. forces in Venezuela's western neighbor in case they are needed. However, the sources said that no such move is imminent.
"As the president has said, all options are on the table," a White House spokesperson told Fox News. The National Security Council declined to comment on the note, while the Pentagon referred questions to Bolton.

Team Trump is building a potent anti-Maduro alliance

In one of his most decisive foreign-policy moments, President Trump recognized Juan Guaidó, the president of Venezuela’s National Assembly, as the country’s interim leader. Free countries from the Western Hemisphere, Europe and beyond, including some adamant Trump critics, joined the US in support of Guaidó and against Nicolás Maduro’s crumbling socialist dictatorship.
Yet China, Russia, Iran and others jumped to Maduro’s defense. Cuba — the country that installed Maduro in power in 2013, as Hugo Chavez was dying in Havana — has overseen the vicious crackdowns against impressive pro-democracy rallies.
Since Wednesday, more than 800 anti-Maduro demonstrators have been thrown into Cuba-modeled dungeons.
So the lines are drawn. As Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told the UN Security Council Saturday, every country must now pick sides: “Either you stand with the forces of freedom, or you’re in league with Maduro and his mayhem.”

Chinese tech giant Huawei — the world’s biggest supplier of network gear used by phone and Internet companies — was charged by the Justice Department on Monday with 13 felonies including fraud.
“Huawei and its senior executives repeatedly refused to respect U.S. law” by misleading banks about the company's business and violating U.S. sanctions, FBI Director Christopher Wray said in a news conference Monday.
The 13-count indictment was unsealed Monday in New York charging Huawei, two of its affiliates and a top executive at the company, Meng Wanzhou.

The mainstream media continue to embarrass themselves and mislead the American people in their relentless pursuit of negative stories about President Trump.
For the past two years, mainstream media outlets have relentlessly attacked the President and his policies, publishing false and uncorroborated reports that call into question the existence of journalistic ethics in America.
The latest example of this malpractice is the recent BuzzFeed News report alleging that President Trump told his former attorney, Michael Cohen, to lie to Congress about a construction project in Moscow.

The second number was the number of states Reagan carried 22 months later.
I am not predicting President Trump will carry 49 states. This is a different environment, and the tribalism that divides the country is deeper than it was 36 years ago.

Lifesite News reports that Dr. William Lile, a board certified obstetrician-gynecologist, has issued a blistering condemnation of New York state's recently passed state law which allows abortion up until birth.
As noted by Lifesite's Calvin Freiburger, Dr. Wile says that "modern medical technology is already giving preborn babies blood transfusions, heart surgery, and more." Many of these surgeries can occur at 22 weeks in the womb, the Alabama and Florida licensed practitioner said. Thus, “If they're a patient they're a person, and if they are a person they deserve our protection.
" But, New York's bill states that “Every individual who becomes pregnant has the fundamental right to choose to carry the pregnancy to term, to give birth to a child, or to have an abortion.” The new law also "erases the state’s recognition of preborn babies older than 24 weeks as potential homicide victims, removes abortion from the penal code entirely, and allows licensed health practitioners other than full doctors to commit abortions."

President Trump announces a deal has been made to reopen the government and end the partial shutdown until February 15.
Numerous Democrats, both in the House and the Senate for the last two weeks, have been speaking to their Republican colleagues. They have been asking them to broker this three-week opportunity to support the wall and negotiate other parts and other issues like DACA and Dreamers.
They have been begging their Republican colleagues to make that deal with the president.
So the president, well, he showed leadership, rose above the partisan bickering in the swamp, offering relief to federal workers all while sticking to his commitment to secure our border.

Venezuela is once again in a state of economic and political chaos. Juan Guaido – Venezuela’s charismatic opposition leader and head of the country’s National Assembly – has declared himself Venezuela’s interim president, directly challenging the legitimacy of President Nicolas Maduro, who began his second term earlier in January.
In May 2018, Maduro won a highly controversial election in which he suddenly moved the election date from December 2018 to May and banned numerous political rivals from participating in the election. Maduro has also been accused of buying votes and rigging the election in his favor. Much of the international community, including President Trump, now say they believe the Maduro regime is illegitimate and support Guaido’s plan to have new elections.
Despite condemnation from dozens of world leaders and tens of thousands of protesters in Venezuela, Maduro, who continues to receive the support of the country’s military leaders, says he has no intention of backing down. It’s hard to imagine how this tragic situation can end without bloodshed.

Never in the history of the country has there been a more dangerous and damning statement.
Yet, based on a report from one publication that has had a problematic past, the Press of America was ready to bring down a duly-elected president based on: “If It Is True.”
This came with the arrival of the two-year anniversary of Mr. Trump’s Inauguration. With that came a broadside of rationale for the removal of Trump as president. That was led by a publication which has a great history, but under the leadership of Jeffrey Goldberg has become hyper-partisan and a center of Left-wing thought -- The Atlantic.
