Rhodes, who served as Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications and Speechwriting, was the Obama’s mouthpiece for his foreign policy agenda. The newest expense report will likely make its way to President Trump, who slammed the investigation last week.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday that the United States and North Korea have made “real progress” in the last three days toward setting the conditions that would allow President Trump and leader Kim Jong Un’s summit to move forward.
“Through these series of meetings, I am confident we’re moving in the right direction,” Pompeo said.

A young computer hacker who prosecutors say unwittingly worked with a Russian spy agency was sentenced to five years in prison Tuesday for using data stolen in a massive Yahoo data breach to gain access to private emails.

A former CIA officer betrayed the U.S. by giving a Chinese spy information about human assets and other top-secret information in exchange for $25,000, prosecutors say.
A jury heard opening statements Wednesday in the trial of Kevin Mallory, 60, of Leesburg, Va.
Mallory, a former self-employed consultant, had grown suspicious about a Chinese think tank’s job offer, defense attorney Geremy Kamens said. Mallory had reportedly told CIA about the job offer, but prosecutors viewed that as an attempt to cover his tracks.

One of the rules of our politics is that it is permissible to accuse the Trump administration of anything — and the claim that it “lost” 1,476 migrant children fits the bill.
It has lit up social media and made the debate over a new Trump policy of “zero tolerance” at the border even more hysterical than it would be otherwise.

The misleading story has been used as a hammer against President Trump’s border policy. Prior to 2011, almost all illegal aliens at the border were single adult males, overwhelmingly from Mexico. Now, 40 percent of illegal aliens at the border are families and children and almost half from Central America. This presents challenges we haven’t faced before, made all the worse by gaping loopholes in the law.

China may be be helping North Korea circumvent international oil sanctions designed to pressure the regime into dismantling its nuclear weapons program, Japanese officials suggested Tuesday.
The Japanese Foreign Ministry released photographs of a North Korean tanker and “a small vessel of unknown nationality flying a flag that seemed like [a] Chinese-flag,” connected by a pair of hoses. The images renew suspicions that Asia’s leading Communist power is undermining Western efforts to cripple North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.

Embarrassment for New York Times as top editor falls for old photo amid weekend of misleading anti-Trump tweets

Some members of the media took to social media to spread misleading stories and photos.
The New York Times Magazine editor-in-chief Jake Silverstein incorrectly shared Obama-era pictures of children sleeping in enclosed cages to take a swipe at the Trump administration – and that was only one of several Twitter stumbles by anti-Trump public figures over the holiday weekend.
It turned out the photographs were published by The Arizona Republic in 2014 after authorities detained over 1,000 children who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border illegally and placed them in a detention facility.
“All of these photos are disturbing, but the first two are especially awful,” Silverstein wrote in the tweet, along with a link headlined, “First glimpse of immigrant children at holding facility.”

The White House on Tuesday said that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will meet this week with a top North Korean official in New York as the U.S. “continues to actively prepare” for President Trump’s expected summit with Kim Jong Un.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump will also meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Washington on June 7, five days before the proposed summit date.

Reuters first reported that the USS Higgins and the USS Antietam ventured within 12 miles of the Paracel Islands in a demonstration the Pentagon calls a “freedom of navigation operation” or FONOP. The move signals US rejection of China’s claims of political control in the South China Sea.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Monday said there could be more impromptu meetings with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ahead of a still halted summit between President Trump and Kim, Reuters reported.
Moon and Kim met on Saturday in the village of Panmunjom, on demilitarized land on the North Korean side of the border. Both leaders agreed during the meeting that a North Korea-U.S. summit must go forward, South Korea’s presidential spokesman later said of the unannounced meeting.

The current Robert Mueller-Justice Department-Russia mess is almost impossible to understand because it is made up of five parallel scandals.
For months, as I wrote my new book, “Trump’s America,” I tried to better understand news as it emerged from the Justice Department – and I still am trying. There are so many moving parts, personalities and dates that it is difficult to track. However, as a trained historian, I began creating an orderly outline for people, dates and events.
I realized that the scandal is so big, so complex, and involves so many people with power that codifying it really required me to draw from my experience writing novels. There are so many egos and there is so much manipulative behavior, dishonesty (and dishonesty about the dishonesty) that it is very difficult to explain it as a straightforward history. It could be more easily explained as a narrative of ambition, illegality and criminal plotting.
Finally, it hit me that the real problem is that there are five parallel and often interlocked scandals going on in concert:

Donald Trump described his decision Thursday to nix his June summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un as a “tremendous setback” for North Korea and the world, but the better word might be relief. Mr. Trump had overestimated Kim’s willingness to give up his nuclear weapons and was heading toward a summit failure.

Obama’s spying scandal is starting to look a lot like Watergate

“F.B.I. Used Informant to Investigate Russia Ties to Campaign, Not to Spy, as Trump Claims,” read the headline on a lengthy New York Times story May 18. “The Justice Department used a suspected informant to probe whether Trump campaign aides were making improper contacts with Russia in 2016,” read a story in the May 21 edition of The Wall Street Journal.
So much for those who dismissed charges of Obama administration infiltration of Donald Trump’s campaign as paranoid fantasy. Defenders of the Obama intelligence and law enforcement apparat have had to fall back on the argument that this infiltration was for Trump’s — and the nation’s — own good.
It’s an argument that evidently didn’t occur to Richard Nixon’s defenders when it became clear that Nixon operatives had burglarized and wiretapped the Democratic National Committee’s headquarters in June 1972.
Until 2016, just about everyone agreed that it was a bad thing for government intelligence or law enforcement agencies to spy — er, use informants — on a political campaign, especially one of the opposition party. Liberals were especially suspicious of the FBI and the CIA. Nowadays they say that anyone questioning their good faith is unpatriotic.
The crime at the root of Watergate was an attempt at surveillance of the DNC after George McGovern seemed about to win the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, just as the government misconduct in Russiagate was an attempt at surveillance of the Republican Party’s national campaign after Trump clinched its nomination.

But the greater and more dangerous departure from norms may be that of the Obama officials seeking to overturn the results of the 2016 election.

President Trump on Sunday accused former President Obama of knowing about Russian meddling in the 2016 election and not doing anything to stop it — despite reports that the Obama administration made multiple attempts to stave off interference from the Kremlin.
Trump took to Twitter Sunday afternoon, alleging that Obama was informed of the meddling by the FBI, but chose not to act on that information because he thought Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton was going to win the election.
“Why didn’t President Obama do something about the so-called Russian Meddling when he was told about it by the FBI before the Election?” Trump asked in a tweet. “Because he thought Crooked Hillary was going to win, and he didn’t want to upset the apple cart!”

As Republicans ramp up their investigation into the FBI's handling of the Hillary Clinton email probe, some Democrats are suggesting it's an effort to distract from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation.
Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said it's just the opposite: the "anti-Trump Russia investigation" is designed to distract from Clinton's national security crimes and the subsequent "cover-up" by the Obama Justice Department and FBI.

Why Trump didn’t tell allies he was backing out of Korea summit

President Donald Trump did not inform South Korea and other US allies before pulling out of the highly anticipated North Korean summit with Kim Jong-un on Thursday in an effort to avoid leaks, a report said.
A South Korean official told The Wall Street Journal that Trump’s announcement came “out of the blue” as the National Security Council scheduled a meeting with the South to discuss other options moving forward, including military action.

The Air Force is integrating the B61 Mod 12 nuclear weapon into the F-35 this year as part of a long-range plan to deploy a nuclear-armed, dual-capable F-35 able to give commanders a wider envelope of precision nuclear attack options.
“Detailed risk reduction activities have been completed ensuring the F-35A is fully compatible with the B61-12 weapon. Planning for Block 4 nuclear certification efforts have begun in anticipation of initial B61-12 integration on the F-35A this year,” Maj. Emily Grabowski, Air Force Spokeswoman, told Warrior Maven.
The Block 4 F-35, to fully emerge in the next decade, contains more than 50 technical adjustments to the aircraft designed as software and hardware builds -- to be added in six-month increments between April 2019 to October 2024, she added.

President Trump has pulled out of the scheduled summit with North Korean Dictator Kim Jong Un in Singapore. The meeting was scheduled for June 12.
In a letter to Un released by the White House Thursday morning, President Trump expressed his disappointment in recent behavior by the regime.
"We greatly appreciate your time, patience, and effort with respect to our recent negotiations and discussions relative to a summit long sought by both parties, which was scheduled to take place on June 12 in Singapore. We were informed that the meeting was requested by North Korea, but that to us is totally irrelevant. I was very much looking forward to being there with you. Sadly, based on the tremendous anger open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting," President Trump wrote (bolding is mine). "Therefore, please let this letter serve to represent that the Singapore summit, for the good of both parties, but to the detriment of the world, will not take place. You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used."

AN international team of investigators has determined that the missile which blew Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 out of the sky nearly four years ago came from a Russia-based military unit.
International representatives, including Australian Federal Police, today gathered in the Netherlands to announce they had found “convincing evidence” that MH17 was shot down by a Buk-TELAR missile from Russia.
Wilbert Paulissen of the Dutch National Police said that detailed analysis of video images showed the missile was from the Russian military’s 53rd anti-aircraft missile brigade based in the Russian city of Kursk.

HONOLULU — Blue flames from burning methane are the latest natural phenomenon being seen at the eruption of the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii.
Nighttime photos released Wednesday by the US Geological Survey show the flames spouting from cracks in the pavement in the Leilani Estates neighborhood where the volcano has been gushing lava on the big island of Hawaii for the past three weeks.
The volcano produces methane when hot lava buries and burns plants and trees.
