US and Canada reach last-minute deal to preserve NAFTA

The United States and Canada reached a last-minute deal late Sunday night on reforming the North American Free Trade Agreement, officials said.
Hours before a midnight deadline, Canada agreed to stay in the free-trade pact — now dubbed the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA — by joining a deal the US and Mexico reached last month.
The revised agreement will result in “freer markets, fairer trade and robust economic growth in our region,” said US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland in a joint statement.

Rachel Mitchell, the sex-crimes prosecutor who questioned Dr. Christine Blasey Ford last week, wrote in a memo released late Sunday that there were inconsistencies in Ford's testimony and that-- given the information at hand-- she would not bring criminal charges against Judge Brett Kavanaugh.
Mitchell, who was hired by the Senate Judiciary Committee to assist Republicans, addressed the letter to “All Republican Senators,” and said no senator approved the memo. She noted in the assessment that she is a Republican, but said she is not a political person.
She identified Ford's case as an example of “he said, she said,” and said her case is “even weaker than that.”

A European Union privacy watchdog could fine Facebook Inc. as much as $1.63 billion for a data breach announced Friday in which hackers compromised the accounts of more than 50 million users, if regulators find the company violated the bloc’s strict new privacy law.
Ireland’s Data Protection Commission, which is Facebook’s lead privacy regulator in Europe, said Saturday that it has demanded more information from the company about the nature and scale of the breach, including which EU residents might be affected.

You’ve probably heard a lot about the supposed blue wave the political elite are predicting for the election cycle. I’m confident Republicans will keep control of the House and the Senate, but a different kind of blue wave is currently washing across several states.
It’s a blue wave of liberal funding.
A massive flow of money from liberal donors in California and New York is pouring into traditionally Republican states and districts. We first saw this blue wave of cash during the special elections held to replace the Congressmen and Senators who were appointed to the Trump Administration. The most notable was the race between Republican Karen Handel and Democrat Jon Ossoff in my old district, the 6th District of Georgia.

Arkansas Republican Sen. Tom Cotton said Dianne Feinstein’s office will be investigated for the leak of Christine Blasey Ford’s letter, a message she explicitly requested be kept confidential.
Speaking Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Cotton told host John Dickerson that, not only will Feinstein and her staffers be investigated for the leak of Ford’s confidential letter, but that Ford’s lawyers will also face a Washington, D.C., bar investigation for allegedly not informing her that Senate Judiciary Committee staffers were willing to travel to California to interview her about her allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley on Saturday sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and FBI Director Christopher Wray, asking for them to begin a criminal investigation into those who made "false statements" about Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Committee.
The man, whose name has been redacted from the letter, allegedly made a false statement to Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse's (D-RI) staff on Monday. The man called Whitehouse's office to report an allegation of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh.
According to The Hill, the man claimed Kavanaugh sexually assaulted him on a boat in Rhode Island in 1985. The Committee investigated the manner and questioned Kavanaugh, under penalty of felony, about the allegation, which he denied. A redacted transcript of that interview was released on Wednesday.

JAKARTA, Indonesia—The death toll from an earthquake and tsunami that struck Indonesia’s Sulawesi island doubled to more than 800 on Sunday as the full scale of the disaster began to unfold and aid workers attempted to reach areas cut off since the deadly wave hit on Friday evening.
Jusuf Kalla, the country’s vice president, warned that thousands of people might have died. He said authorities had received little word of what happened in the Donggala area near the epicenter of the quake, where nearly 300,000 people live.

A U.S. Navy warship patrolled near at least two Chinese-held outposts in the disputed Spratly island chain in the South China Sea on Sunday, challenging Beijing’s maritime claims amid growing tensions between the two countries.
The guided-missile destroyer USS Decatur navigated past Gaven and Johnson reefs over the course of a 10-hour patrol in the South China Sea, sailing within 12 nautical miles of both features in what amounts to a freedom of navigation operation, or FONOP.

Kavanaugh’s hearings are a national disaster — and the worst is yet to come

This is a golden age for cynics. You will rarely go wrong in assuming an absence of decency and courage in the political class. However low the bar is set, it will not be low enough.
Witness how the confirmation hearings for Brett Kavanaugh started as cheap theater and ended in bloodsport. The process by which we elevate someone to the highest court in the land sunk to the lowest common denominator — and didn’t stop.
And now the national disaster will be aided by more time and a fresh supply of dynamite.
Friday’s agreement to give the FBI a week to supplement its background check by looking into existing misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh guarantees the nightmare will continue, especially for him and his battered family. You don’t have to be a cynic to assume the rabid left will come up with more outlandish accusations in an effort to make up in quantity what it lacks in quality.

That scenario is why the attacks on Kavanaugh are so vicious, and why they won’t stop. Schumer, who pledged to fight the nomination “with everything I have,” aims to keep the court seat open and use it as a rallying cry to help retake the Senate in the midterms.
He would then become majority leader and able to block anyone Trump picks. And if Dems also take the House and try to impeach Trump, Schumer would use that effort as a reason not even to consider any Trump nominations.
In short, as bad as last week was, coming weeks will be worse because nothing was resolved. All that happened was that America got kicked down the road.

North Korea and Syria, places of international concern that spill trouble beyond national borders, are to appear before the U.N. General Assembly at a time when both countries could be on the cusp of significant developments.
President Trump and his secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, are trying to regain momentum more than three months after the Singapore summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, and are pushing for a second meeting in their quest to get Pyongyang to renounce its nuclear ambitions. Syria could be on the verge of emerging from seven years of bloody conflict that included the use of chemical weapons.

Millions of Americans have been deeply and emotionally engaged by Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing and the astonishing spectacle that unfolded in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
It is absolutely right to say that we are in a vital cultural moment. Ending sexual misconduct and the abuse, exploitation and harassment of women by men is long overdue.
For as long as I can remember I have done what I can to uphold the principle of gender equality – not just in my own life and behavior, but where I’ve had the chance to be an advocate or shape policy too.
But we are also in a vital political moment. Just as we're moving in the right direction on gender equality, we're moving in the wrong direction when it comes to politics.
And sadly, one party is overwhelmingly to blame. We discovered that Thursday at the reopened Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing for Kavanaugh.
I came away from watching the hearing convinced that both Christine Blasey Ford – who accused Kavanaugh of attempting to rape her when they were high school – and Kavanaugh are two good people caught up in an ugly war. Kavanaugh said repeatedly that he has never sexually assaulted anyone.
Before Thursday, I just disagreed with the Democrats. Now I'm frightened of them. They strike me as truly cruel. Calculating. Crazed with their own self-righteousness.

A North Korean agent, a stolen-credit-card peddler and the mastermind of an $80 million Ponzi scheme had a common problem. They needed to launder their dirty money.
They found a common solution in ShapeShift AG, an online exchange backed by established American venture-capital firms that lets people anonymously trade bitcoin, which police can track, for other digital currencies that can’t be followed.
Since bitcoin was introduced nearly 10 years ago, law-enforcement authorities have worried the technology could ease money laundering. Now a new breed of cryptocurrency intermediary is giving fresh urgency to those fears, operating in plain view with scant policing and often allowing users to engage in anonymous transactions.
A Wall Street Journal investigation identified nearly $90 million in suspected criminal proceeds that flowed through such intermediaries over two years.
Most operate beyond the reach of U.S. authorities, with unidentified owners and addresses in places such as Eastern Europe and China.
Not ShapeShift, the largest recipient of the funds with a U.S. presence. The company is officially registered in loosely regulated Switzerland, but it is run out of a 1980s-era office building in a Denver neighborhood packed with tech companies and marijuana entrepreneurs. ShapeShift’s founder and chief executive, Erik Voorhees, along with its chief operating officer and its marketing chief, all live in the Denver area.

Consumers feel lost and powerless. Their most personal information is being mined to create the most profitable and powerful companies in human history.
Some of that information has been lost or stolen. On Friday, for example, Facebook announced that the personal information of nearly 50 million users has been exposed in an attack on its computer network.
Adding insult to injury, these corporate behemoths are seemingly undertaking efforts to suppress views that they disagree with.

The death toll stood at nearly 400 people in Indonesia on Saturday as rescuers and others reacted to a devastating magnitude-7.5 earthquake and tsunami affecting the island if Sulawesi.
The nation's disaster agency counted 384 dead, all of them in the city of Palu, with the grim figure only expected to continue rising, Agence France-Presse reported.
The tsunami hit two central Indonesian cities, sweeping away buildings and pulverizing a substantial bridge, dumping victims caught in its relentless path across a devastated landscape that rescuers were struggling to reach, hindered by damaged roads and broken communications.

Facebook reveals security breach affecting 50 million users

The hits keep on coming for Facebook.
On Friday, the social network revealed that it was the victim of a hack that affected nearly 50 million accounts and left 40 million others at risk.
Facebook discovered the breach on Tuesday, and determined that hackers had “exploited a vulnerability in Facebook’s code” which allowed them to take over users’ accounts.
VP of product management Guy Rosen said in a blog post that Facebook took swift action against the hackers, resetting access to the affected accounts and logging out 90 million total accounts as a security precaution.

President Trump orders FBI investigation into Kavanaugh
Following calls for delay of Senate vote on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump orders new FBI probe; chief White House correspondent John Roberts reports.
President Trump on Friday ordered the FBI to conduct a limited "supplemental" background investigation into the allegations of sexual assault against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Republicans are moving "forward" with the nomination.
“I’ve ordered the FBI to conduct a supplemental investigation to update Judge Kavanaugh’s file," Trump said in a statement. "As the Senate has requested, this update must be limited in scope and completed in less than one week.”
Trump's order came after after several undecided senators whose votes are needed to confirm Kavanaugh called for a weeklong FBI probe before a floor vote.
The Senate had been expected to begin procedural votes on Kavanaugh's nomination this weekend, but those plans are being delayed for several days now. That means a potential confirmation vote could come late next week, next weekend or perhaps the week of Oct. 7.

The U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations took up a megaphone and addressed protesters calling for the ouster of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro outside the U.N. building in New York on Thursday.
"We are going to fight for Venezuela and we are going to continue doing it until Maduro is gone!" Nikki Haley shouted from the megaphone, according to a report by AFP.
"We need your voices to be loud, and I will tell you, the U.S. voice is going to be loud," she said.
The unusual move comes a day after Maduro derided the U.S. as "imperialist" during a speech to the annual U.N. General Assembly meeting. The U.S. has imposed sanctions on Maduro and other members of his regime, including his wife.

Graham rips Dems for turning Kavanaugh hearing into ‘unethical sham’

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham angrily blasted the Democrats’ handling of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation process as “the most unethical sham since I’ve been in politics.”
“If you wanted an FBI investigation, you could have come to us,” Graham (R-SC) said, his voice shaking, as he addressed Democrats on the Judiciary Committee. “What you want to do is destroy this guy’s life, hold this seat open and hope you win in 2020 — you’ve said that, not me.
“This is the most unethical sham since I’ve been in politics, and if you really wanted to know the truth, you sure as hell wouldn’t have done what you’ve done to this guy.”
Graham then asked Kavanaugh if he thought Thursday’s hearing was a job interview.
The senator then said: “This is not a job interview. This is hell, this is going to destroy the ability of good people to come forward because of this.”
He finished his speech by declaring, “To my Republican colleagues, if you vote no, you are legitimizing the most despicable thing I’ve seen in my time in politics.”

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh ripped his Senate confirmation process as a "circus" that has led to smears and threats against his family, and said the Senate effort to investigate sexual assault claims against him has become a “national disgrace.”
"This confirmation process has become a national disgrace,” Kavanaugh said during his opening statement before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
"The Constitution gives the Senate an important role in the confirmation process. But you have replaced advise and consent with search and destroy,” he continued.
"I swear today under oath before the Senate and the nation, before my family and God, I am innocent of this charge," he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, addressing the U.N. Geral Assembly on Thursday, accused Iran of masking a nuclear warehouse inside a rug-cleaning plant.
Netanyahu appeared to disclose information about the “atomic warehouse” that was otherwise classified.
“What I'm about to say has not been shared publicly before,” he said before pulling up what looked to be satellite images of the supposed location, titled “Iran’s Secret Atomic Sites.”

Senator Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. accuses Democrats of an 'unethical sham,' says Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has nothing to apologize for, urges fellow Republicans to vote to confirm Kavanaugh.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., let loose on his Democratic colleagues Thursday over what he called the "sham" hearing to probe sexual assault allegations against Brett Kavanaugh, in a display that earned him praise from the White House and scorn from the left.
Graham blasted Democrats toward the end of the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing with the Supreme Court nominee and accuser Christine Blasey Ford. She alleges Kavanaugh forced himself on her when both were high school students in the 1980s.
But Graham alleged the Democrats' handling was all about politics.
"This is the most unethical sham since I've been in politics,” a visibily angry Graham said from the dais while pointing at Democratic senators. “And if you really wanted to know the truth, you sure as hell wouldn't have done what you've done to this guy.”
Graham added: “Boy, y’all want power and I hope you don’t get it.”

Democracy 101: Let your opponents eat in peace

Should we really care if people are rude to figures like Sen. Ted Cruz, White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders or Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen when they go out to eat? The latest instance was captured on a viral video in which Cruz and his wife are hounded out of a popular Washington restaurant by a bunch of angry left-wingers.
Some are treating this as a sideshow, but it would be a mistake to underestimate the importance of such incidents. While fears about the threat to democracy posed by Trump have become a staple of liberal commentary, his opponents are demonstrating that the question of the future of our political system is more of an issue than conservatives may have thought. While Trump has played a major role in coarsening our political culture, it’s also vital for those who oppose him to be honest about what they’re doing to weaken the fabric of American democracy.

If Americans can no longer agree to disagree about whether to enforce immigration laws or foreign policy, then the issue isn’t so much Trump or who gets to eat in peace when they are at a restaurant as it is whether American democracy can survive. That’s why it’s as important for an angry left to step back from the brink as it is for Trump.
If both sides of the aisle don’t start listening to what Abraham Lincoln once called “the better angels of our nature” and remembering what we have in common as Americans, the consequences truly are unimaginable.

The attempted character assassination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh has brought out the worst in Democrats, every Democrat, everywhere. They’ve convicted a good and decent man of things he wasn’t even falsely accused of, so desperate are progressives to stop someone who believes the Constitution means what it says from sitting on the Supreme Court. From elected officials to unelected Democrats with media credentials, the last two weeks have exposed the Democratic Party as a gaggle of guttersnipes willing to destroy a man for the “crime” of disagreeing with them politically. After watching this unfold, you really have to wonder one thing: Is there a single decent, honest Democrat left in the United States?
The circus Democratic Senators created surrounding the Kavanaugh nomination should serve as a scarlet letter on every single one of them for the rest of their lives and should stain the buildings they’ll fund in their states with our tax dollars with will bare their names. It’s a disgrace.

Laugh at the U.N., Not With It

Oh, how they laughed.
When President Trump told the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday that “in less than two years, my administration has accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country,” the delegates of the world couldn’t contain themselves. “I didn’t expect that reaction,” Mr. Trump responded to the laughter ringing through the hall, “but that’s OK.”
Mr. Trump’s boast merited an eye roll, but I’d laugh right back at the U.N. It deserves it.
Who but the U.N. would elect some of the world’s leading human-rights abusers—Saudi Arabia, China, Venezuela, Pakistan and others—to run a Human Rights Council and lecture the rest of us? In 2016 many of these members even tried to silence Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, in midsentence as he exposed their hypocrisy.
Who but the U.N. would elect the Islamic Republic of Iran to the executive board of its agency “dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women”? The World Economic Forum ranks Iran 140th out of 144 nations in parity between the sexes for a reason. Its regime arrests and beats women who peacefully protest for their rights. It imprisons and tortures women for removing their headscarves. Discrimination is written into every area of Iran’s civil code, from marriage and divorce to employment.
