Jay Sekulow cites FISA 'attack' in jab at Adam Schiff and other impeachment managers

President Trump’s legal team used the Senate impeachment trial as a platform to chide Democrats for casting aspersions on allegations of surveillance abuse against the 2016 Trump campaign.
Jay Sekulow, an attorney on Trump's defense team, took an indirect swipe at House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, the lead impeachment manager who was in the Senate chamber on Tuesday, for his defense of wiretapping of former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page, an American citizen who was suspected of being a Russian agent but was never charged with wrongdoing.
"Managers at this table right here said that any discussions on the abuse from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act utilized to get the warrants from the court were 'conspiracy theories,'" Sekulow said.
Claiming that Trump was under "attack," Sekulow cited the secret surveillance court's acknowledgment in a recent court filing that the Justice Department found at least two of the FISA orders targeting Page in 2017 were insufficiently predicated.

The chairman of Harvard University’s chemistry department was arrested Tuesday on charges of lying about receiving millions in Chinese funding, in an escalation of U.S. efforts to counter what officials say is a plot by Beijing to raid U.S. universities to transform China into a scientific superpower.

Trump draws huge crowds days before NJ rally

Thousands of people have gathered in New Jersey ahead of President Trump’s “Keep America Great” rally Tuesday night.
The crowds offer a strong show of support for the commander-in-chief in a historically blue state amid the impeachment trial in the Senate putting his presidency in jeopardy.
Hundreds of Trump supporters have been camped outside the Wildwood Convention Center since as early as 2 p.m. Sunday to see the president’s first rally in the Garden State since taking office. The number skyrocketed into the thousands by Tuesday morning.

Sprawling lines were forming overnight in the Jersey Shore destination of Wildwood in anticipation of President Trump’s campaign rally scheduled for late Tuesday, in a show of support by Trump's faithful amid the bruising impeachment fight back in Washington.
The scene is striking considering Jersey’s political reputation as a blue state. But as Rep. Jeff Van Drew suggested Tuesday morning, the southern part of the state where Trump is heading may be more MAGA-friendly.

“South Jersey’s forgotten about sometimes,” said Van Drew, a former Democrat who switched parties to become Republican after the House impeachment vote that he opposed. He represents much of South Jersey and plans to accompany Trump Tuesday night — and pocket a presidential endorsement in the process.
“There are people that are excited, homemade signs, all kinds of activities, people are camping out, just thousands and thousands of people,” he said on “Fox & Friends.”

China has reported more than 2,700 infections and 82 deaths from its latest coronavirus, and some experts say there could be hundreds of thousands of cases not yet confirmed. The outbreak is exposing the vulnerabilities of China’s top-down government, and the damage is spreading far beyond the mainland.

Impeachment’s proving a giant dud and other commetary

At The Hill, Liz Peek snarks: “Is there a law against boring people to death?” If there were, Democrats could be indicted for initiating “such a profound undertaking, the overturning of an American election,” only to yield such a “dramatic dud.” Why do the proceedings make for such lame TV? Because House Democrats engineered the whole thing “in such a way as to render the partisan outcome predictable.” Along the way, they also undercut their “own effectiveness by leaking every interesting snippet that was damaging to the president.” The result: “By the time the full House and the country got to hear the charges against the president, during endless hours of debate, most Americans had already heard the flimsy facts of the case and were becoming less impressed by the day.” And that was all before the repeat act in the upper chamber left most senators “insensate.”
From the right: Revering a Mediocrity
On Twitter, law professor Jonathan Adler recently wondered “whom [Rep. Adam] Schiff, et al., think their audience is.” National Review’s David Harsanyi answers: “the media.” Last week, the establishment media fawned over Schiff, a “middling congressman” who gave a “middling” impeachment speech. From CNN chief legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin, who called Schiff’s performance “dazzling,” to The Washington Post correspondent Greg Miller, who effused that the California representative “will leave a mark on history, exceeding nearly all his contemporaries,” the media’s desire to make Schiff “a modern-day Cicero” was “insufferable,” Harsanyi scoffs. It just points to the establishment’s “bizarre impulse to revere anyone who declares himself an enemy of the president.” Recall the media’s last favorite: “Where have you gone, Michael Avenatti?”

The deadly animal-borne coronavirus spreading globally may have originated in a laboratory in the city of Wuhan linked to China’s covert biological weapons program, said an Israeli biological warfare analyst.
Radio Free Asia last week rebroadcast a Wuhan television report from 2015 showing China’s most advanced virus research laboratory, known the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The laboratory is the only declared site in China capable of working with deadly viruses.
Dany Shoham, a former Israeli military intelligence officer who has studied Chinese biological warfare, said the institute is linked to Beijing’s covert bio-weapons program.

During an interview on "Sunday Morning Futures" with Maria Bartiromo, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-KY) blasted Democrats for failing to believe that Hunter Biden is a key witness in President Donald Trump's impeachment trial.
“Real quick. I have two questions for you real quick. Number one on Hunter Biden. If you do not call Hunter Biden as a witness this time around, if you don’t get to witnesses, what will you do?" Bartiromo asked. "You talked about an independent counsel before.”

China adds 769 confirmed cases of coronavirus in 24-hour period

Chinese officials added 769 confirmed cases of coronavirus on Sunday, bringing the total number of people claimed to have been infected with the illness to more than 2,700.
The life-threatening coronavirus sparked global concern after an outbreak of the illness appeared in Wuhan, China. The Chinese government claims that 80 people have died of the virus in the region surrounding Wuhan, along with four who died in other regions of the country.
China placed more than 50 million people under quarantine, but the virus has been detected beyond Wuhan and the surrounding region.
