From the Panchen Lama to Joshua Wong: How the CCP Silences a Generation

In June 2023, I was in Dharamsala, India, the home of the Tibetan government-in-exile. Something I saw there has stayed with me ever since: posters of a young boy were still everywhere, reminding the world of a child who had been missing for nearly three decades. His name is Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the 11th Panchen Lama.
He was only 6-years-old when Chinese authorities took him and his family away on May 17, 1995, just three days after the Dalai Lama recognized him as the 11th Panchen Lama.
More than 30 years later, his whereabouts remain unknown to the outside world. Human Rights Watch describes the case as an enforced disappearance. Chinese authorities have acknowledged taking him away, but have refused independent access to him or precise information about his whereabouts.
