The House has left Washington for a more than six-week recess, leaving a growing debate over artificial intelligence regulation unresolved and delaying a Republican lawmaker’s effort to impeach War Secretary Pete Hegseth until after the November elections.
Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., canceled the House’s remaining votes Wednesday, sending lawmakers home a day earlier than planned. The Associated Press reported that the move sends members back to their districts to campaign for the November midterm elections, which will determine whether Republicans retain control of the House and Senate.
''The House has done its work,'' Johnson told reporters, saying it was time for lawmakers to return to their districts and ''make their case to the American people.''
