Chang to Newsmax: DOJ Must Probe Elaine Chao's CCP Ties

China expert Gordon Chang told Newsmax that reports of Elaine Chao's ties to Chinese Communist Party-influenced organizations while she served in two U.S. Cabinets warrant a Justice Department investigation into possible espionage and disclosure failures.
Chang, a Gatestone Institute senior fellow and author of “Plan Red: China’s Project to Destroy America,” said the allegations have reached a threshold that only federal prosecutors can properly assess.
He appeared Saturday on Newsmax's America Right Now as scrutiny intensified over a Daily Caller News Foundation investigation that reported Chao, the wife of Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., had held at least four positions with Chinese government- and Communist Party-linked organizations since 2008. Some reportedly overlapped with her tenures as labor secretary and transportation secretary.
Asked whether a Cabinet member could have been close to Beijing or even one of its assets, Chang said flatly, “That’s certainly possible.” He called for an inquiry into what he described as “a stunning lack of judgment” and warned that the omissions “could very well be a violation of federal law.”
The Daily Caller reported that three of the positions were connected to arms of the United Front Work Department, a Chinese Communist Party organization that the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission has identified as part of Beijing’s foreign influence apparatus.
