Pew Poll: 6 in 10 Americans Identify as 'Working Class'

A majority of Americans now consider themselves members of the "working class," a label that cuts broadly across traditional lines of income, education, and occupation, according to new Pew Research Center polling published this week.
Among U.S. adults, 60% say "working class" describes them extremely or very well, up from 54% in 2024.
While the identification is strongest among Americans without four-year college degrees and those with middle incomes, half of college graduates and half of upper-income Americans also embrace the label.
The findings underscore just how expansive, and politically valuable, the working class has become as both Republicans and Democrats compete to portray themselves as its champion heading into the November midterm elections.
Pew found a distinct partisan divide, 67% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents identify as working class, compared with 55% of Democrats and democratic leaners.
