As the solemn 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks arrives, the Trump administration is urging schools to make sure a new generation of students understands what happened that day and remembers the nearly 3,000 people who were killed.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon issued guidance Thursday encouraging schools to commemorate Sept. 11 with age-appropriate lessons, moments of silence and opportunities for students to reflect on the attacks and their significance to the nation.
"A quarter century has passed since that terrible day, but we must never forget what September 11th means for the United States," McMahon said.
"This year, I call on American schools to educate students with moral clarity about the events of that day and its significance for the Nation's history," she said.
The administration's guidance is aimed in part at students who were not yet born when 19 terrorists associated with al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes and carried out the attacks.
McMahon suggested that schools could hold a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the World Trade Center's north tower, incorporate lessons about 9/11 or ask students to share their own reflections.
She also encouraged educators to teach the stories of individuals whose courage became part of the legacy of the attacks, including the passengers of United Airlines Flight 93, Welles Crowther and Lt. Col. Marilyn Wills.
Crowther, known as the "Man in the Red Bandana," helped people evacuate the World Trade Center before he was killed in the attacks, while Wills helped evacuate people from the Pentagon.
The passengers of Flight 93 fought back against the hijackers before the plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, preventing it from reaching its intended target.
The attacks killed 2,977 people at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and near Shanksville, according to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
