Speakers Praise Trump, Blast Democrats at GOP's Midterm Convention

Republicans used the opening night of their unusual midterm convention on Wednesday to hammer Democrats as extremists and pledge unwavering devotion to President Donald Trump, placing their party's leader at the center of their effort to maintain control of Congress in November.
Many Republicans, including some facing competitive races, are skipping the two-day affair in Dallas, while others hope their appearance will put them in the national spotlight as they work to turn out Trump's supporters in a year when he is not on the ballot.
The convention — part rally, part fundraiser — comes as Republicans try to boost enthusiasm heading into the final stretch before Election Day, amid concerns about inflation, the cost of living and the war in Iran.
Much of the agenda sought to cast Democrats as too far left, with speakers attacking their opponents as extremists and socialists while Republicans presented themselves as a “common sense” alternative in the fight to maintain control of Congress.
The show even got a boost from an unlikely source, Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman, who told the crowd in a video message that he is a “commonsense Democrat” who is “always going to stand with America.”
“I’m always going to reject the extremes and socialism and that anti-American way of life,” Fetterman said.
Standing in front of a U.S. Steel mill in Pennsylvania, Fetterman said he would “work with President Trump to fight and defend the steel way of life” and praised Republican Sen. Dave McCormick, calling him a friend and saying McCormick “gets the job done.”
Republican speakers repeatedly praised Trump and promoted the party's agenda, including tax cuts, border security and other priorities of his administration.
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., urged the crowd to recognize Trump as the driving force behind the gathering, saying, “Let’s hear it for the man who had the vision to hold this convention.”
Emmer also framed the midterms as a choice between Republicans and Democrats, telling the crowd the GOP represented “common sense” while accusing Democrats of representing “communism.”
