Chang to Newsmax: China Spying on US 'Relentless'

Author and China critic Gordon Chang told Newsmax on Monday that China has long conducted a "relentless" intelligence-gathering campaign against the U.S.

On "American Agenda," Chang said that recent reports indicating China is using oceangoing freighters to surveil America should have been predicted.

"I'm not surprised about this at all, because we know that China over the course of decades has conducted this relentless information collection campaign against the United States," he said.

Chang said the Chinese state-owned shipping firm Cosco is not the only potential Chinese spying platform operating in the U.S.

"It's not just Cosco ships off our waters," he said. "It's also those huge cranes at all of our ports. We know that the Shanghai company, ZPMC, that operates and built those cranes has included communication modules in those cranes that were not part of the original specifications."

Chang said the equipment could give China the ability to monitor or remotely control the cranes.

"Those modules allowed China to surveil us, but also to remotely control those cranes, which means they can shut down our ports and cause havoc there. So no, we shouldn't be surprised," he said.

Chang said it's likely that maritime spying was happening during the Biden administration, "and before that. We can go back probably to the beginning of this century or even before that, because China, we know, uses every point of contact to surveil our society."

Chang said that raises the issue of what to do about the information challenge.

"The issue here is not that the Chinese are surveilling us. The issue is, what are we going to do about it? Because we've known about this. This is our country. We have the means to stop it. And as a society, we've decided not to stop it. So this is on us."
