Why Google Should Not Rule the World

The internet has provided tools to improve the world that are, in a way, indescribable. For example, understanding the multitude of medical challenges people face becomes easier with the internet. Improving your language skills and understanding a foreign language is infinitely simpler. But there are severe challenges that come with the ease of the internet. Google and others cannot go unchallenged.
This all began as something to explore for me when within a month I had a chance to spend an extended period of time with two different biochemists on two different continents. Both of these men are utterly brilliant individuals and it was fascinating to have the chance to have prolonged dialogues with both.
The first is a retired college professor who is not really retired. He is in the middle of writing four textbooks at what most people would consider an advanced age.

In addition, he is convinced we have lost our humanity as people bury their faces while staring at their phones looking at strident comments from people they barely know.
We can all agree we love our tech, but there is a lot to dislike. We certainly don’t want the self-appointed gods of tech ruling our lives, restricting our speech or what we can read. It may be time to rein them in.

The U.S. pulled out of a global pact on migration and refugees Saturday, informing the United Nations that it will make decisions independently about who is allowed to come to the U.S.
The U.S. will no longer participate in the Global Compact on Migration, a result of the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, which was unanimously adopted last year as a non-binding agreement to protect the rights of refugees, help them resettle, and facilitate access to education and employment, according to Voice of America.
President Donald Trump’s administration has expressed concerns, suggesting that the accord poses a threat to U.S. national security. “Our decisions on immigration policies must always be made by Americans and Americans alone,” U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley said Saturday. “We will decide how best to control our borders and who will be allowed to enter our country.”

President Trump argued Sunday that a recent story by ABC News reporter Brian Ross was so “false and dishonest” that it caused the stock market to drop 350 points and that investors who lost money as a result should sue the network for damages.
“People who lost money when the Stock Market went down 350 points based on the False and Dishonest reporting of Brian Ross of @ABC News (he has been suspended), should consider hiring a lawyer and suing ABC for the damages this bad reporting has caused - many millions of dollars!” Trump tweeted.

Sexual misconduct allegations are continuing to reduce the ranks of men in the anti-Trump media.
Charlie Rose of CBS and PBS, left-wing filmmaker Harvey Weinstein, Mark Halperin of NBC and MSNBC, and Michael Oreskes of NPR were joined just this week in the ranks of the unemployed by NBC “Today” co-host Matt Lauer and Garrison Keillor of Minnesota Public Radio. Keillor also lost his newspaper column distributed by the Washington Post syndicate. And New York Times White House reporter Glenn Thrush remains suspended.
These were hardly the only media figures affected as the industry wrestles with how to handle the crisis. NPR Chief News Editor David Sweeney and a CNN “staff member on the Sunday morning program ‘State of the Union’” both also lost their jobs. Three staffers at Vice media were also let go, “amid an ongoing investigation into sexual harassment and misconduct in the workplace,” according to The Hill.
But for prominent names like Lauer and Keillor to be fired within days of one another stunned an already staggering media industry.

Death toll rises after massive truck bombing in Somalia
MOGADISHU, Somalia – The final death toll in October's massive truck bombing in Somalia's capital is 512 people, according to the committee tasked with looking into the country's worst-ever attack.
The final toll is a dramatic increase from previous estimates of more than 350 killed. The committee's report, obtained by The Associated Press, says another 312 people were wounded in the Mogadishu bombing and 62 people remain missing.
Somalia's government has blamed the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab extremist group for the Oct. 14 attack, which struck a crowded street. Security officials said the bomb weighed between 600 kilograms and 800 kilograms (1,300 pounds and 1,700 pounds) as the extremist group's bomb-making capabilities grow.

US sends F-22s to join hundreds of fighters for North Korea war games

Six of the most advanced American stealth fighter jets arrived in South Korea on Saturday for a new round of war games aimed at North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile program, according to local reports.
The Defense Department sent the F-22 Raptors to participate in a four-day joint military exercise in South Korea. The games are taking place just days after North Korea tested an intercontinental ballistic missile that appears capable of reaching the eastern seaboard of the U.S.

Yesterday, Guy updated his story to reflect ABC's costly mistake reported by Brian Ross. Ross falsely reported that "candidate" Donald Trump instructed Gen. Michael Flynn to contact the Russians. In reality, it was "president-elect" Donald Trump. That is a huge difference. Guy summed up the basic problems such false reporting creates below:
"With faith in the press in crisis, these bad errors don't help close the credibility gap, particularly among people who already believe the media is out to get Trump. It took ABC far too long to fix this mistake, especially since other news organizations were reporting accurately on this timeframe issue (again, see below). And blaming it on one source misspeaking suggests that they didn't have a corroborating second source -- a journalistic best practice -- who could have cleared up the mistake before it was put on-air and online."
ABC waited nearly 7 hours before correcting the mistake. Now, we know just how much of an impact this fake news had on the economy.

Does the Nov. 28 launch of North Korea’s new Hwasong-15 ICBM mean time has run out to use sanctions and diplomacy to halt the growing threat from its nuclear and missile programs? I believe the answer is probably no, but such a day is rapidly approaching.

The left typically reacted to North Korea’s latest missile test by insisting that tensions can only be resolved with negotiations and sanctions. This includes The New York Times, which made the delusional claim in a Nov. 29 editorial that North Korea’s recent nuclear and missile developments may be “a sign of hope” for diplomacy.
Hillary Clinton also is urging negotiations and made the ludicrous statement during a visit to China that “Beijing should remember that inaction is a choice as well.” Clinton must have forgotten that the Obama administration’s inaction toward North Korea is why its nuclear and missile programs surged to the dangerous levels they are at today.
These naive views ignore two fundamental truths about North Korea’s nuclear program.

Less than a day after the New York Times reported that Matt Lauer committed at least one violent sexual assault in his NBC office, his former “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie read, solemnly and with great sympathy, Lauer’s self-serving statement.
Why would she do that? Why would she act as body armor for a known predator who spent decades victimizing her female co-workers?
Guthrie’s not alone. It’s been startling to see, over the past few weeks, those friends and colleagues — ostensibly smart, together, professional women — who publicly agonize over deviant criminal behavior.
What, really, is there to understand?

American Center for Law and Justice says documents show FBI was more focused on keeping the meeting quiet than the meeting itself.
The revelation last year of an unorthodox tarmac meeting between former President Bill Clinton and then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch set off a frenzied scramble at the FBI to track down the source, newly released documents show.
Conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch, which on Thursday released 29 pages of FBI emails related to the 2016 meeting, said the messages show officials were more concerned about the leak than the substance of the report.

Lynch later expressed regret that she sat down with Bill Clinton while his wife was under federal criminal investigation, a chance encounter she acknowledged “cast a shadow” on the public’s perception of a case bound to influence the presidential campaign.
“I certainly wouldn’t do it again,” Lynch said of the meeting.
