Cuba Plunges Into Darkness Again With Total Collapse of Electricity Grid

The grid was restored 30 hours later, but rolling blackouts continue for many Cubans.

Cuba’s failing power grid suffered a total collapse on the afternoon of Sept. 18, leaving the country of 10 million without power.

The grid experienced the collapse at 1:57 p.m. ET, according to the U.S. Embassy in Havana.

Cuba’s National Electrical Union (UNE) reported immediately after the failure that the cause was under investigation, with an unknown time until power restoration.

In a later update, authorities said the collapse was triggered by the failure of high-voltage transmission lines in central Cuba. According to independent Spanish-language news site cibercuba.com, which maintains a daily blackout dashboard, UNE also blamed unstable weather conditions as an aggravating factor.
