Senate Rejects Latest Bid to Curb Trump's Iran War Powers

The Senate on Thursday defeated yet another bipartisan attempt to curb President Donald Trump's war powers in Iran, as a growing number of congressional Republicans have publicly voiced concerns about the seven-month-old conflict ahead of the midterm elections.
The War Powers Resolution, which the House passed by a 214-208 margin in July, was defeated by a 50-49 vote. Four Republicans — Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Thom Tillis of North Carolina — voted for the measure. One Democrat, Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, voted against it. Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, D-Md., who has previously supported efforts to end the conflict, did not vote.
The measure directed Trump to remove U.S. forces from hostilities against Iran unless Congress authorized the military campaign. Because it was a concurrent resolution, however, the measure would not have carried the force of law.
