US Reaffirms Support for Japan, South Korea, Taiwan

The joint remarks were released ahead of a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Washington.

The United States has reaffirmed its support for Japan and South Korea, with all three nations stressing their backing for Taiwan and the preservation of a “free and open” Indo-Pacific region.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York on Monday.

A joint statement released by the State Department on Sept. 21 said the United States “reiterated its ironclad commitments to the defense of Japan and the ROK, backed by America’s unmatched military strength, including its nuclear capabilities, and reaffirmed its extended deterrence commitments to Japan and the ROK,” using the initials for the Republic of ‌Korea, ⁠South Korea’s official name.
