Fantasizing about Trump's assassination, Hollywood shows its moral sickness

Hollywood. A place where rich, beautiful, and famous people mobilize positive social change.

At least, that's the belief of many Hollywood residents, and former President Barack Obama. The Hollywood elite, Obama said in January, are "helping us to celebrate our triumphs and illustrate our flaws."

Obama was always at home in Hollywood. It was his constant source of emotional support and an exceptional supply of hard cash.

President Trump would likely meet a slightly different reception if he stepped out onto the star-studded streets.

In fact, Trump's Secret Service detail would probably keep a very tight formation around him. After all, many Hollywood celebrities now seek the president's death. They say so openly.

At a top British music festival on Wednesday, Johnny Depp suggested that Trump be invited to attend. The crowd booed. Depp then added, "You've misunderstood me." He continued, "When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?"

Depp is just the latest assassination fantasist. As The Wrap reports, their number now includes Larry Wilmore, George Lopez, Marilyn Manson, Madonna, Kathy Griffin, and Snoop Dogg. Others such as Robert De Niro say they would like to attack Trump but not kill him.

Of course, while the Secret Service must investigate all threats against a president, it is unlikely that Depp and co. meant their threats literally. As with Shakespeare in the Park's production of Julius Caesar, this is a "cathartic liberal scream in the doom of Trump's America." Still, fantasizing about the assassination of a president is both arrogant and morally foul.

Arrogant, because it shows ones belief that the rendered will of the electorate is worth less than a solitary perspective. Our Republic does not require our fealty to the president, but it does expect our acceptance of democratic authority.

And morally foul, because we are a democracy. Whatever we think of a particular president, we recognize the office. Each of us is entitled to one vote. To call for the death of an elected president is to embrace the tyranny of one.

To be sure, Depp might claim that he is a jester. And yes, his eyes suggest a proclivity for considerable drug use. But Depp and his fellow fantasists dishonor themselves by worshipping the assassin's creed.

These are no moral servants of America.

And this type of "democracy" seems to be smeary already.
