Republican win for Karen Handel in Georgia byelection a victory for Donald Trump

Washington: The candidate said it was not about Donald Trump, but the President and others made it about Trump and, on a rainy night in Georgia, they got their answer: to the extent that it was a referendum on Trump, he won.
More a political slugfest than a byelection, the candidates and outside political action committees spent more than a record $US50 million ($66 million) in the contest for a well-heeled, well-educated and Fox News friendly pocket of the Atlanta suburbs.

And on the back of an Associated Press declaration that Handel had won by a margin of five points, Trump won.
Uncharacteristically, Trump made the win all about Handel, tweeting late in the evening: "Congratulations to Karen Handel on her big win in Georgia 6th. Fantastic job, we are all very proud of you!"
