Giffords: Scalise has the courage he needs to recover from shooting

Former Rep. Gabby Giffords offered words of encouragement to her former colleague House GOP Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) and the other victims of Wednesday’s shooting at the congressional Republican baseball practice.
“I know Steve and everyone there this morning have such courage in great supply,” Giffords, who was shot in 2001, said in a statement.

Scalise and the congressional Republicans were practicing ahead of Thursday’s baseball game, when a shooter opened fire, injuring Scalise, a lobbyist, a staffer, and two Capitol police officers.
“I am heartbroken for the pain of Congressman Scalise, the other victims, and their family, friends, and colleagues,” she said.
The former Arizona congresswoman went on to praise the Capitol police, who were present at the baseball practice because the Republican whip was present.
“I am thankful for the courage of the Capitol Police, who were my protectors after I was shot and became my friends,” she said.
Giffords was shot and severely injured at a constituent event in Tucson in 2011. Six others died in the attack.
