At Least 61 Dead From Forest Fires in Central Portugal


Dozens found dead in vehicles or alongside a road trying to escape the flames

MADRID—Forest fires raging through central Portugal have killed at least 61 people, a death toll that officials said is expected to rise as firefighters battle six major blazes.

At least 47 of those killed had been found dead in their vehicles or alongside a road, engulfed by flames and smoke as they tried to flee their homes, many of which had been consumed by the conflagration, said interior ministry official Jorge Gomes. ...
