Top ATO official to face court in fraud probe
Nick Hansen - The Daily Telegraph
FORMER deputy tax commissioner Michael Cranston has resigned from his role with the ATO after allegedly abusing his position to help his son.
The ATO this afternoon confirmed Mr Cranston had submitted his resignation on the same day he faced a charge by federal police at Sydney’s Downing Centre Court.
He said nothing as he walked through a press pack at the CBD court.
His son Adam Cranston, 30, is accused of playing a central role in a tax fraud syndicate which allegedly siphoned $165 million in PAYG payments away from the Australian Taxation Office.

Australian Federal Police claim Cranston Snr used information he accessed in his capacity as deputy commissioner to dishonestly obtain a benefit for his son, as the ATO and AFP closed in on the alleged fraud ring earlier this year.
Cranston Snr is not suspected of being involved in the fraud.
