Parents need to take responsibility in stopping their children heading to Syria for jihad instead of relying on the police, one of the country’s most senior officers has said.
Sir Peter Fahy, chief constable of Greater Manchester Police, said families and carers were the best placed to spot the early signs of radicalisation.
His comments came as police have faced criticism over the case of three teenage Muslim girls who left London to travel to Syria.
The families of Shamima Begum and Amira Abase, both 15, and Kadiza Sultana, 16, have said police should have done more to alert them to the possibility of what their children may have been planning.
But Sir Peter, who is the national lead for the counter radicalisation programme, Prevent, said: “The prime responsibility for stopping young people thinking of travelling to Syria or other warzones must be with their families and carers, who know them and are able to spot the early signs of radicalisation.
