Al Qaeda attacks HQ of Syrian rebels it calls 'U.S. agents'

BEIRUT -- Members of al Qaeda's branch in Syria launched an attack early Friday on the headquarters of a rebel faction in northern Syria believed to have been trained by the U.S. government, killing at least five fighters and wounding more than a dozen, the militants and an activist group said. The Nusra Front, which has also abducted several members of the faction known as Division 30, vowed to cut off "the arms" of the American government in Syria.
A statement issued in the name of Division 30, said its fighters prevented Nusra Front gunmen from storming their head office and added that the fighting is still ongoing.
The Nusra Front said in a statement later Friday that it has detained some members of Division 30, claiming they were trained by the CIA and that the previously obscure group's fighters had entered Syria recently "to carry out the projects and interests of America in the region and to fight what they call terrorist organizations."
The fighting came a few days after the U.S. and Turkey announced the outlines of a deal to help rebels push the Islamic State group back from a strip of territory it controls along the Syrian-Turkish border, replacing it with more moderate rebels backed by Washington and Ankara.
A U.S. military official on Friday seemed to deny any American connection to Division 30, saying that no member of a U.S.-backed rebel faction had been abducted.
"That report had nothing to do with the Syrian fighters we trained and equipped," said Marine Corp. Brig. Gen. Kevin Killea, chief of staff of the U.S.-led coalition. "We have nothing to confirm any reports that talk about injured, killed in combat. I can tell you with certainty we know that none of them have been captured."
However both the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and Abdul-Jabbar Abu Thabet, commander of Aleppo Swords Battalion -- a moderate faction that is fighting both Syrian government forces and Islamic State -- said the members of Division 30 were trained by the U.S. in Turkey.
Abu Thabet said Nusra Front has been referring to Division 30 as "agents of the Americans."
Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Observatory, said that the rebel group's perceived American connection made it a target for the Nusra Front.
"They are trying to liquidate any group that has links to the West," he said.
The Observatory added that warplanes believed to be from the U.S.-led coalition attacked Nusra Front positions in the area after the fighting broke out.
The Nusra Front, which has in the past targeted rebel groups backed by the United States, said coalition warplanes struck their positions in the area of fighting with more than 10 missiles that killed and wounded several fighters. It said the airstrikes showed "the clear co-operation and co-ordination" between the U.S. and Division 30.
In the past year, the extremist group has routed the U.S.-backed Harakat Hazm rebel group and the Syria Revolutionary Front from their main northern strongholds in Idlib province, dealing a blow to U.S. efforts to arm and train moderate Syrian rebels.
The Nusra Front statement said the U.S. had extended its arms inside Syria over the past two years, and in response, "the Mujahedeen cut these arms."
The Observatory and Abu Thabet said Friday's fighting was concentrated south of the Syrian town of Azaz on the border with Turkey.
Nusra Front's attack came two days after the extremists abducted Col. Nadim al-Hassan, commander of Division 30 and seven of his men, according to the rebel group, the Observatory and the Nusra Front itself.
Abu Thabet and Division 30 said Nusra Front gathered its forces in the area near Azaz on Thursday saying that they were heading to fight Kurdish fighters in the nearby region of Ifrin. Instead, they launched an attack on the Division 30 command near Azaz, they said.
Division 30 called on the Nusra Front to stop their attack "to avoid bloodshed between Muslims" and said five of its fighters were killed and 18 were wounded in the fighting. The Observatory said 18 Nusra Front fighters were killed in the fighting and the airstrikes.
The Nusra Front vowed to defend Syrians against President Bashar Assad's government as well as "any American agent."
The Obama administration has long struggled to find partners on the ground in Syria to work with in its war against the Islamic State group.
A program for training moderate Syrian rebels to fight Islamic State has been faltering. Pentagon officials say the vetting has been so strict that of an estimated 6,000 Syrian volunteers, only 1,500 have been declared qualified so far and as few than 100 have entered training taking place at bases in Jordan and Turkey. Fewer than 60 have recently entered Syria.
In eastern Syria, the U.S. backed coalition destroyed three bridges on the Euphrates river including one close to the Syrian-Iraqi border, according to the Observatory and the Local Coordination Committees activist group.
Earlier in July, the coalition attacked 16 bridges in and near the northern Syrian city of Raqqa, the Islamic State group's de facto capital, in order to prevent the extremists from moving military capabilities in Syria and Iraq.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, are expecting a baby girl, he said on his Facebook page on Friday.
The couple, who married in 2012, have been trying to have a child and had three miscarriages, he wrote. Zuckerberg, 31, did not say when their daughter is due but said the pregnancy was far enough along that the risk of miscarriage was low.
"We hope that sharing our experience will give more people the same hope we felt and will help more people feel comfortable sharing their stories," wrote the founder of the world's largest social media network.
Zuckerberg, who often uses his Facebook page to make both corporate and personal announcements, opened up about the emotions he and Chan, who is a doctor, have felt while trying to have children. He wrote about the hope they felt upon learning about each pregnancy.
"You start making plans, and then they're gone. It's a lonely experience," he posted. "Most people don't discuss miscarriages because you worry your problems will distance you or reflect upon you. So you struggle on your own."
Zuckerberg noted that Chan, 30, and their child are both healthy and that he would share more as her due date approached.
"In our ultrasound, she even gave a thumbs up 'like' with her hand," he wrote, "so I'm already convinced she takes after me."
The couple met at Harvard University as classmates and dated for more than a decade before tying the knot.

FireEye Inc. CEO Dave DeWalt is a veteran of the cybersecurity industry, having led McAfee through its acquisition by Intel Corp. INTC, -0.07% and he sees a stark reality in the dark realm of online attacks.
“There is a Cold War in cybersecurity, and that’s a fact,” the executive said in an interview with Marketwatch on Thursday afternoon.
DeWalt noted that the United States, Russia and China are involved in “a superpower struggle,” which may include the recent breach of federal personnel records in which Chinese hackers are suspected. He also mentioned groups in Syria, North Korea and Iran, which he called “totalitarian states that won’t tolerate that action without some linkage” to the government.
In total, DeWalt made an educated guess that the majority of online attacks are initiated by groups affiliated with a government entity.
“There’s a grand chess game being played out in cyber,” he said.
FireEye FEYE, -5.34% has managed to capitalize on a steep rise in data breaches, putting government agencies and commercial entities on alert and in need of security services. The Milpitas, Calif., company revealed quarterly revenue of $143.2 million Thursday, up 56% year-over-year, and billings of $178.3 million. Both figures beat internal and analyst projections, though shares fell in after-hours trading as FireEye also announced the departure of Chief Financial Officer Michael Sheridan.
“The CFO leaving won’t move the needle, DeWalt is the face of FireEye,” FBR Capital Markets analyst Daniel Ives said in an email Thursday.
‘”The face of FireEye” doesn’t seem nervous about attracting a new chief financial officer in a competitive Silicon valley job market, noting that FireEye received 30,000 applications in the quarter while hiring 180 new employees.
“I’m getting pinged for CFOs so fast right now,” DeWalt said in a telephone interview ahead of Thursday’s conference call.
DeWalt can feel confident because the cybersecurity industry is booming in response to new online threats. Acquisition activity has heated up, with one recent deal valuing a year-old security startup at $190 million. FireEye got out ahead of this trend, however, including the $1 billion post-IPO purchase of Mandiant, the security company that first publicly detailed Chinese military involvement in hacking attacks against the U.S.
FireEye’s spending just after its initial public offering and $1 billion secondary stock sale allow it to sit out the now elevated market for security companies. “We’re not really in the acquisition game,” DeWalt said Thursday.
Instead, FireEye can focus on attempting to be more nimble and up-to-date than large traditional tech players such as Cisco Systems, Inc. CSCO, -0.14% , Symantec Corp. SYMC, -0.22% and McAfee, as well as more practiced and advanced than newer startups like Palantir Technologies. DeWalt says the former, including his previous company, have “technology that isn’t providing as much value as it once was,” while newer rivals are “going to have a hard time leveraging this window.”
To take advantage of its position, FireEye is entering into novel partnerships with public and private entities to develop security solutions. The company has landed deals with several federal government agencies and detailed a deal with Visa earlier this summer that Dewalt says will “eradicate fraud across merchants at a speed of remediation that’s unparalleled.”
FireEye has managed to strike similar partnership deals with insurers and telecommunciations providers, DeWalt says, and will continue to look for more.
“These are really the next-generation models,” he said.
