Ford was piloting a vintage two-seater fighter plane when something went wrong and he crashed near the eighth hole of the golf course.

Ford's publicisty team has also released a statement saying the actor is expected to make a full recovery.

"Harrison was flying a WW2 vintage plane today which had engine trouble upon take off. He had no other choice but to make an emergency landing, which he did safely. He was banged up and is in hospital receiving medical care. The injuries sustained are not life threatening, and he is expected to make a full recovery."

According to the FAA, the plane crashed shortly after takeoff, around 2:20 p.m local time, after suffering some kind of "mechanical failure."

Ford can be heard in audio from the plane saying that he needed to make an emergency landing.

Harrison Ford is being treated for non life-threatening injuries in hospital. His son, Ben, has Tweeted that Dad is "battered but ok!"

The actor suffered multiple gashes to the head and was treated on the scene by two doctors who happened to be at the Penmar Golf Course before being rushed to a nearby hospital.

"There was blood all over his face," Howard Tabe, an employee at the Penmar Golf Course, told NBC News.

"Two very fine doctors were treating him, taking good care of him. I helped put a blanket under his hip."

While the Los Angeles Fire Department initially indicated the pilot was taken to the hospital in "critical condition," the Santa Monica Fire Department later said he was "conscious and breathing" and in "fair to moderate" condition. At an afternoon press conference, authorities affirmed that the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Rick Doukakis, a witness to the crash, told Entertainment Tonight that the pilot was moaning loudly and "had a huge gash in forehead, there was lots of blood."

There were no visible broken bones and he was moving his legs, Doukakis said.

An experienced pilot, witnesses believe Ford flew the plane into trees in an attempt to slow the plane down in its emergency landing.

"I heard this sputtering noise and knew a plane was coming down," Doukakis recounted. "If he didn't hit that tree... he would have hit some houses," Doukakis said of Ford's landing.

Ford is a longtime aviator and has crashed multiple times in the past.
