Colonel Gaddafi: the 'mad dog' leader's 42 years in power

Branded a "mad dog" by Ronald Reagan, Colonel Gaddafi has been associated with some of the most notorious terrorist atrocities of the pre-9/11 era.

Gaddafi gained global recognition when he led a bloodless military coup in Libya in 1969 to topple King Idris, who had ruled the former Italian colony since independence in 1951.

As Libya's new leader, Gaddafi soon began pursuing the aim of uniting Arab countries. He instigated the Federation of Arab Republics with Syria and Egypt in April 1971, a short lived endeavour to merge the three countries as a United Arab state.

It was during the 1980s that Gaddafi's relationship with the West deteriorated amid accusations of Libyan sponsorship for terror attacks. In 1984 WPC Yvonne Fletcher was shot and killed from within the Libyan embassy.

Then in 1986 there was the bombing of a Berlin nightclub - in which two US marines were killed. The attack prompted President Reagan to launch airstrikes on Tripoli. Gaddafi's adopted daughter was among 35 Libyans killed in the raid.

Two years later on December 21, 1988 came the most notorious incident of all - the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over the Scottish village of Lockerbie, killing 270 people.

Former South African President Nelson Mandela played a key role in persuading Gaddafi to surrender two Libyan nationals suspected of involvement in the bombing.

Abdel Basset al-Megrahi was found guilty of mass murder and given a 27-year prison sentence. Al-Amin Khalifa Fa-hi-ma was acquitted and set free.

In March 2004, Tony Blair visited Gaddafi's tent in Tripoli after Libya announced it was ending its weapons of mass destruction programmes and agreed to short-notice checks of its nuclear sites by United Nations nuclear inspectors.

Gaddafi made further attempts at rehabilitating his image in the West, sending son Mutassim on an official trip to the US State Department and visiting himself Libya's former colonial ruler Italy.

In August 2009, the Lockerbie bomber Abdel Basset al-Megrahi was controversially released from his Scottish jail on health grounds, returning to Libya with Gaddafi's eldest son Saif al-Islam.

Shortly after Gaddafi made his first visit to the US since taking power. He addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York with a rambling speech lasting one hour and 35 minutes.

The toppling of autocratic rulers in Tunisia and Egypt in early 2011 prompted a popular revolt against Gaddafi as the 'Arab Spring' gained momentum.

Gaddafi's violent crackdown on initial protests sparked a civil war, which prompted the Arab League to call for a United Nations no fly zone over Libya.

On March 19 - two days after agreeing a Security Council resolution - a five-country coalition made up of the United States, France, Britain, Canada and Italy, launched air strikes on Libya in a joint operation called "Odyssey Dawn".

Gaddafi has remained defiant in the face of Western air strikes but an increasingly well-organised rebellion has forced his retreat to Tripoli.

Not seen in public since an air strike hit his compound in Tripoli on May 1, the whereabouts of Libya's ruler are unknown. But as the capital is surrounded by advancing rebels, the Colonel's four decades of power may soon be coming to an end.
