Police are advising caution when handing their Census forms back after reported cases of mistaking thieves for collectors.

Police are advising residents to be careful when handing their Census forms over, after reported cases of people mistaking thieves for collectors.

In Adelaide, one elderly woman from suburban Everard Park was robbed in broad daylight on Wednesday, when a man knocked on her front door, holding paint tins that came from her outdoor laundry.

The 86-year-old told 7News she had been expecting a Census collector to return for her forms that afternoon.

"I just said to him, 'I suppose you want these, the Census forms?'"

"And then he just followed me inside," she said.

He then distracted her, telling her that there was a young child playing in her back yard and that she should go help the child.

Left alone inside the woman's home, he took the woman's Census forms and her purse and bank cards that she had kept in a kitchen drawer.

Census spokeswoman Caroline Deans said there was no reason to let a Census collector inside your home.

"Our census collectors are out in the field now, they started on Wednesday and they’re going to be out in the field collecting forms over the next couple of weeks," she said, "So all the way through until the end of August."

"Wait for your collector to come back and get the form from you, they’ll be coming back up to five times, at different times of the day and over the weekend."

But Ms Deans also warned of the pitfalls of the paper-based Census forms falling into the wrong hands.

"Census forms should never be left outside, they contain personal information," she said, "So hand it in person to the collector."

And she said Census workers are easily recognisable, carrying yellow satchels and wearing ID tags.

"Our collectors will always be wearing Census identification, they’ll be wearing a photographic ID which is signed on the back," she said, "So feel free to have a look at that ID."

SA Police have issued advice to residents, particularly the elderly, to request and check identification before handing over their Census forms or allowing anyone into their homes.
