VIETNAM's Prime Minister has intervened in the Reserve Bank of Australia bribery scandal, suspending the country's former central bank governor from a senior government post and ordering anti-corruption officials to co-operate with Australian police, it has been reported.
Vietnam's Communist Party newspaper Thanh Nien reported at the weekend that Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung had retired former State Bank governor Le Duc Thuy from public service in March, shortly after The Age revealed RBA banknote firm Securency International had paid for his son's education at England's Durham University.
Mr Thuy, who switched Vietnam's currency from paper to Securency's polymer material during his term as central bank governor from 1999 to 2007, has since served as chairman of Vietnam's National Financial Supervisory Committee.
Prime Minister Dung was Mr Thuy's predecessor as central bank governor in 1998-99, which was when Vietnam first trialled printing a banknote on Securency's polymer material. The Age is not suggesting Mr Dung was involved in any wrongdoing.
Mr Thuy's removal from public office is the latest development in the continuing fallout from Australia's biggest foreign bribery scandal.
Those convicted of bribery in Vietnam can face the death penalty.
More senior Vietnamese officials are expected to be publicly linked to the $20 million in commissions Securency paid to Hanoi's businessman and suspected Ministry of Public Security colonel, Anh Ngoc Luong and his company, CFTD.
Australia's trade agency, Austrade, recommended Securency engage Colonel Luong as its agent despite officials being aware of his ties to Vietnam's powerful internal security agency and Australia's laws forbidding the payment of foreign officials to obtain a business advantage.
The federal opposition and the Greens have pledged to hold a parliamentary or judicial inquiry into Austrade's involvement in the RBA firms' overseas dealings once the Australian Federal Police investigation has concluded.
Thanh Nien quoted a senior Vietnam police official, Trieu Van Dat, as saying local investigators would be seeking evidence from the AFP regarding the alleged bribes paid to Vietnamese officials. Mr Dat said Vietnamese police had yet to see evidence of wrongdoing.
Federal police this month charged Securency and Note Printing Australia with allegedly bribing foreign central bank officials and politicians in Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia to secure banknote contracts between 1999 and 2005.
Securency and NPA are respectively half and fully owned and supervised by the RBA.
At the time the alleged bribes took place, the Securency and NPA boards were chaired by former RBA deputy governor and former Australian Prudential Regulation Authority chief Graeme Thompson.
The Australian Securities and Investments Commission is under pressure to investigate the failure of the Securency and NPA boards to properly supervise the companies' activities.

Thế mà nhiều ông bà đánh trâu vẫn còn lờ đờ nhắm mắt, miệng lại cứ ra rả hô hào đội lũ súc sinh BÁN NƯỚC Việt cộng trong đó có thằng nguyễn tấn dũng lên đầu đi "chống tàu xâm lược", vẫn bình lọan cho giới "trí đủ" và "sĩ đặc" trong và ngoài nước "thưởng thức" mỗi ngày .
Không chừng một ngày nào đó những thằng cộng sản cha "hán bự" tàu cộng của những thằng cộng sản con phản quốc Việt cộng giăng những tấm bản "no dog, no Vietnames" trước những vùng chúng nó đang chiếm và rào lại không cho người dân VN vào, ngay trên lãnh thổ VN, ngay trên đất liền chứ nào phải chỉ có ngoài Biển Đông, lúc đó không biết những kẻ "trí đủ" và "sĩ đờ" này có chịu MỞ MẮT ra chưa ???
Và lúc đó các ông các bà Mỹ, Úc, Anh, Pháp, Ca Na Đa, Thụy Sĩ, Na Uy, Hòa Lan, Đức, Bĩ, ... gốc "vịt kiều" đã biết NHỤC chưa hay vẫn còn tiếp tục hớn hở kéo về rửa mặt chùi chân bưng bô cho bè lũ BÁN NƯỚC csVN và đội lũ súc sinh này với thằng quốc tặc hồ chí minh với cờ MÁU trên đầu đi "xuống đường" "chống tàu xâm lược" ???
Chưa bao giờ trong lịch sử mấy ngàn năm của dân tộc VN lại trở thành thê thảm Ô NHỤC đến thế .
Đồng bào ơi, hãy đứng lên lôi cổ bè lũ súc sinh Việt cộng xuống để được ĐỨNG LÊN LÀM NGƯỜI.
