Putin telephones Obama to discuss Ukraine, Syria and Iran

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday telephoned U.S. President Barack Obama, who urged him to withdraw his troops and weaponry from Ukrainian territory, the White House said in a communique.

"President Obama reiterated the need for Russia to fulfill its commitments under the Minsk agreements, including the removal of all Russian troops and equipment from Ukrainian territory," the White House said.

The two leaders, who have maintained a cool and distant relationship because of their differences regarding the Ukraine conflict and the civil war in Syria, had not spoken since last February, when Obama telephoned Putin.

According to the White House statement, on this occasion Putin called Obama and the pair discussed the Ukraine conflict, in which Moscow is supporting the separatists in the eastern part of that country in their fight against the pro-Western central government in Kiev.

Washington says that Russia is sending regular army troops and armament to help the pro-Russian separatists in the conflict, something that has motivated the United States to announce it would stockpile heavy weaponry and station troops on the eastern borders of the Eastern European NATO member countries, right on Russia's doorstep.

Putin and Obama also spoke of the need to counteract the Islamic State and about recent events in the Middle East, in particular the ever more dangerous situation in Syria, the White House said.

"The leaders discussed the increasingly dangerous situation in Syria, and underscored the importance of continued P5+1 unity in ongoing negotiations to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon," the White House added.

Russia is one of the main international allies of the Syrian regime of Bashar Al-Assad, who in four years of civil war has lost control of broad swaths of the country to the advances of the jihadist IS.

The United States, which has called for the negotiated departure of Assad from power, last September began to mount airstrikes on IS positions in Syria, taking on a more significant role in the conflict.

Putin and Obama also discussed the international talks with Iran to ensure that it does not divert its nuclear program to military ends, talks that are scheduled to wrap up this month, hopefully with a definitive agreement, and in which the United States, Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom and Germany are participating.
