AUSTRALIA must build missile systems and defence shields to prepare for an invasion from China even if it costs $60 billion a year, Palmer United Party senator Jacqui Lambie has warned in a dramatic escalation of her party’s claims about the rising threat from Asia.

Senator Lambie issued the alert in a move to support party leader Clive Palmer as he faced a barrage of rebukes for claiming “Chinese mongrels” were trying to take over the country.

Experts dismissed Senator Lambie’s claims as “crying wolf” about China even as Mr Palmer seemed to be trying to play down his initial claims.

Hours after Mr Palmer had claimed he was criticising a Chinese company rather than its government, Senator Lambie said her party leader’s comments were a “timely warning” of the danger.

“If anybody thinks that we should have a national security and defence policy, which ignores the threat of a Chinese communist invasion — you’re delusional and got rocks in your head,” she wrote in an email to the media.

“The communist Chinese military capacity and level of threat to the Western world democracies is at an unprecedented and historical high.

“They come at a time when Australian military spending and capacity is at historic lows.

“Today China is controlled by an aggressive, anti-democratic, totalitarian government. We need to double the size and capacity of our military right now.

“Both Labor and the Liberals/Nationals have failed to build an Australian military that is able to defend us — and stop our grandchildren from becoming slaves to an aggressive, anti-democratic, totalitarian foreign power.”

Senator Lambie stood by those claims on Sydney radio yesterday afternoon, saying Australia’s defence spending should double to $60bn a year to prepare for the threat.

Asked if China was preparing an invasion of Australia, Senator Lambie said: “No, not right now.”

Mr Palmer appeared to backtrack on Twitter yesterday in his only public comments after an outcry about his initial comments on the ABC’s Q & A program.

“My #qanda comments not intended to refer to Chinese people but to Chinese company which is taking Australian resources & not paying,” he tweeted.

But Senator Lambie portrayed her leader’s remarks as part of a wider concern about the threat from China.

Lowy Institute analyst Rory Medcalf dismissed Mr Palmer’s and Senator Lambie’s claims

“As for the comments by Jacqui Lambie, they are not helpful to those Australians who are genuinely concerned about the uncertainties arising from China’s growing power,” Mr Medcalf said.

“She is crying wolf, and that does not help in reaching balanced judgments about what Chinese military power will actually mean for Australia and what we should do about it.”

PUP senator Zhenya Wang, who described himself yesterday as Chinese-born, also backed the party leader by saying Mr Palmer’s remarks had been taken out of context and triggered by “provocative” questions onQ&;A.
