The attack on a French factory appears to be a terrorist attack, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says.
"If the early reports are true, this is another horrific reminder of the brutality of these terrorist organisations that are attacking civilians in a most violent and barbaric way," Ms Bishop told reporters in Melbourne.
A suspected Islamist attacker has pinned a decapitated head covered in Arabic writing to the gates of a gas factory in eastern France.
Ms Bishop said the early reports appeared to be correct and indicate that it was a terrorist attack.
"There is an indication that a black flag with Arabic writing was found near the scene and that there was a decapitated head," she said.
"That would be consistent with other terrorist attacks that we've seen in recent times.
"It is a grim reminder of the horrific nature of these terrorist attacks and we must be ever vigilant to ensure that this doesn't happen in Australia."
French Prime Minister ramps up security near 'sensitive sites':
French Prime Minister Manuel Valls has ordered heightened security measures at "sensitive sites" near the gas factory that was attacked in eastern France.
Valls, who is on an official trip to South America, asked Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve to head to Saint-Quentin Fallavier, the site of the attack, the premier's entourage said.
French authorities have also opened a terrorism investigation after an attack and explosion at a gas factory that left one person decapitated and several wounded.
Officials said banners with Arabic inscriptions were found near the body.

France's anti-terrorism prosecutor quickly launched an investigation.
Details of the attack were sketchy but two French officials said it began mid-morning in the Isere region when two men crashed a car into the entrance of the factory and into gas canisters, touching off the explosion. One attacker was arrested, they said.
A man has been decapitated and an Islamist flag reportedly raised at a company near Grenoble in France.
Several people are also said to have been hurt amid explosions at a factory near the town in southeast France.
French police said 'unknown person' exploded gas containers at the company this morning.
