An asylum seeker from Afghanistan, who had previously survived numerous perils in his hometown of Herat, was wounded in both legs and an arm when a gunman ran rampage on Utøya Island, Norway, on Friday.

Hussein Kazemi, who sought refuge in Norway two years ago, is one of the dozens of people still hospitalised after Friday's attack, which claimed the lives of at least 86 people, most of them teenagers and young adults.

A 32-year-old Norwegian man named Anders Behring Breivik, who holds anti-immigration views, is the main suspect in the attacks.

Despite lying in a hospital bed with gun wounds on all but one of his limbs, Kazemi still has an optimistic view of his adopted country: "I have experienced much good in Norway, so much good." He also takes a good-humoured view of having received severe gunshot wounds in a supposedly peaceful country. "Life is like that... In a dangerous place, you always have a chance to live, and in a safe place you always have a chance of being killed. It's destiny and you cannot avoid it.

"I experienced many dangers in Afghanistan. But this is the worst experience I will ever have in my life," the 19-year-old Afghan said in a bedside interview on Sunday.

Many immigrants or children of immigrants were at the camp, an annual event for Norway's up-and-coming liberal Labour party activists. Kazemi said the shooting began soon after he finished playing in a football tournament in which party activists from all over the world took part. Afghanistan, Georgia, the Kurdish regions of Turkey and Iraq, Sri Lanka, Somalia and Lebanon were among the nations represented.

Despite the anti-immigrant views that Breivik has expressed, according to Kazemi he shot indiscriminately, and did not appear to be targeting campers of a particular racial origin. "He seemed to want to kill everyone. No one was to be spared," he said, in comments that his older stepbrother helped to translate from his native Afghan language of Dari.
