It is wise to seek a closed hearing. This monster did not commit suicide, or die in a standoff, because he wanted to take the stage and spout his hatred to Norway, Europe and the world. The murders he committed were for the purpose of obtaining the world's attention. Having achieved the goal of obtaining the world's attention, he now relishes the opportunity to bring his message of hatred and chaos to a worldwide audience.

We ought not let the terrorist win. There should be a closed hearing so that those who lost loved ones do not have to endure the preposteros scenario of Breivik presenting his 'explanation' for why he killed their children and family.

We need, and the good people of Norway need, to continue to be liberal and democratic in dealing with this monster. At the same time we must not be naive.

Breivik is a messianic. He represents himself as a messenger of god. He admits to conduct that would break man's law. He denies guilt because he was doing god's will. He pleads not guilty to use the courts as a platform for his hate. There is no need to allow him to misuse society further.

This is good. No need to give him the publicity he seeks.

Catherine Wilkie,

PM Harper did make a statement on the Norwegian massacre.

He condemned it as a barbarous action and he extended condolences on behalf of Canada and all Canadians.

It was an appropriate response.

I do not support Harper politically at all but there is a time and place for everything.

This story is not the place..................

Incredibly sad story. I hope the survivors of this rampage have a full physical and emotional recovery- no easy task. My thoughts and wishes are with them, their families and anyone touched by this madman's attack.

"a revolution to rid Europe of Muslims" - replace the word Muslims with Jews and these could be the words of Hitler. I hope people are paying attention this time.

Catherine Wilkie,

With all due respect to you the occasion called for a dignified response from our PM.

It was not the occasion to turn it into a grand standing event for himself.

Had Stephen Harper come out and made it all about himself you would have accused him of show boating and turning a tragedy into an opportunity to showcase himself.

His response was appropriate. No world leader is doing anything differently.

This was a sad event for Norway.

93 innocent people are dead and that is where the focus should lie.

.

CatherineWilkie...said ; Where is Harper?

>>>

Catherine, are you trying to somehow draw Harper and Canada into this tragedy?

I'm not at ALL certain that is a viable approach.

Why is that when a Christian commits terrorist acts, he is labeled a madman and not a terrorist?

How long before Breivik's supporters start making him a martyr?... Well, it's already started, of course. We have lots of his sympathisers telling us that he might have gone a smidgen too far, but he was dead right in his beliefs.

The victims are not even buried and we have dozens of posters defending their killer's ideas.

The most offensive and controversial speech is exactly what needs protecting - this is why free speech laws exist.
Popular speech doesn't need protecting.

I would be most interested to read the ramblings of this lunatic. We need to understand the working of such deranged minds before we can hope to prevent such occurrences.

Sticking your head in the sand and hoping it all goes away will accomplish nothing.
Publication bans are impossible since the advent of the internet. I read all about Bernardo on internet newsgroups even though everything was banned.

What about the GMs policy on not allowing comments regarding ongoing legal cases?

I guess this only applies to Conrad Black!

Remember on these threads, Day One of the event? The muslims did it!!! The muslims did it!!! Deja Vu to the whole Timothy McVeigh act. It was the muslims!! The muslims!! We learned another harsh lesson. The white guy standing next to you on the bus, sans turban, ..........

There will be more. Look at the divisiveness in the States and in Canada. right vs left has never been so strong. Teabaggers urging violence. Harper Regime urging fear and hate. It's coming to a neighbour near you and it will not be sporting a turban.

He doesn't need a platform and I'm glad the judge will not give him one.
Who cares if his sick manifesto is already published - all these nutbars publish them and they all are justifications for their warped actions.
He's deranged and needs to be dealt with by the justice system, and locked away forever ASAP.

"Yes, this man was a terrorist, but he was no Christian. He was a heretic of ancient vintage."

Ah yes, the disavowals begin.

When Muslims kill, it's because their religion compels them to do it- according to some. Yet when Christians kill, 'by definition' it means that they're insane terrorists, not Christians. You should ignore the entire, grotesque and horrific historical record of Christians killing all and sundry. They weren't Christians at all. They were just terrorists.

Rad Fodder writes: Islam is the single most retro-grade and parasitic force on earth. Multiculturalism is the vehicle that Islam uses to gain access to it`s host...the west... in this case Norway . Islam and multiculturalism are responsible for far worse overall world wide, than what took place in Norway.
-------------------------------------

Actually, love of money, petroleum and capitalism are the most retrograde forces. They insinuate themselves into nations, burrowing into both the earth and flesh of the host traditional societies, erecting Western structures to replace indigenous ones. '

It is not THEIR fast food which is sweeping the globe. It is not THEIR porn, TV, music etc which is getting a grip on our kids, to the chagrin of OUR old folks.

As WE roll over the world with a Western steamroller, you have nerve to suggest that we are the ones who have something to fear, that we are the ones whose culture is in danger.

What a crock of ****.

I continue to be appalled by the insensitive and dogmatic ramblings of a surprisingly large number of writers in the G&M comments section both in general but shockingly specifically in response the the mass murder in Norway.

Frankly my time is too precious to me for me to spend any more time "debating" issues with people whose prose disgust me.

I also take the G&M to task for facilitating the nausiating and thinly disguised hate speech of these posters. Far too many postings call for extreme actions against groups or even individuals. Many of these writers have left themselves open to criminal or civil legal actions but the G&M continues to let them post while only censoring their worst and most obvious missives.

So long and thanks for all the viciousness.
