'Severe' 5.5 earthquake rocks central NZ

A 5.5 magnitude earthquake has hit the Cook Strait, not far from the location of November's fatal 7.8 quake in Kaikoura.
The quake hit 35km east of Seddon, had a depth of 17km and struck at 3:34pm.

GeoNet classed it as "severe".
It was widely felt across both islands, including Wellington where many residents took to social media to report the strong shake.
