Hollande: Airstrikes in Syria 'Necessary'

French President Francois Hollande, whose country is conducting surveillance flights over Syria, announced Monday that France will begin airstrikes against Islamic State militants in that country.

"We announced surveillance flights that would allow us to prepare air strikes if they were necessary," Hollande told reporters, "and they will be necessary in Syria."

France has been part of the U.S.-led coalition bombing IS positions in Iraq for the past year, but Hollande changed strategy last week to expand action to Syria, as political pressure mounts over the jihadist threat faced by France.

Until now, France has carried out airstrikes only in Iraq, afraid that expanding action to Syria could strengthen the power of President Bashar al-Assad. But that has changed as Islamic State has expanded across Syrian territory.

A new poll finds that 56 percent of the French support a possible military operation against Islamic State in Syria, although most believe military intervention cannot resolve the current crisis in Syria.

France has so far confirmed it has carried out two surveillance flights over Syrian territory.

The United States, Canada, Turkey and Gulf states already have been involved in strikes on IS militants in Syria. And Australia announced last week that it would join the Syrian operation.

Britain killed two jihadists in a drone attack in Syria last week.
