Spread of Russian craters prompts safety concern from scientist

A mysterious 'gigantic' hole has appeared over a gas-rich area in Siberia labelled the 'end of the world', prompting speculation over its origin.


The number of giants craters appearing in the northern Russia is growing as a respected scientist raised the safety implications of the strange phenomenon.

The Siberian Times reported that satellite imaging showed one large hole surrounded by as many as 20 mini-craters.

Russian Academy of Sciences member Professor Vasily Bogoyavlensky said his organisation knew of seven craters in the remote part of Russia.

"Five are directly on the Yamal peninsula, one in Yamal Autonomous district, and one is on the north of the Krasnoyarsk region, near the Taimyr peninsula," he said.

"I would compare this with mushrooms: when you find one mushroom, be sure there are few more around. I suppose there could be 20 to 30 craters more."

The first crater in the Yamal was discovered in July last year and quickly captivated Russia.

Mikhail Lapsui, a deputy of the local parliament, told The Siberian Times: "I flew by helicopter to inspect this funnel on Saturday 19 July.

"Its diameter is about 15 metres. There is also ground outside, as if it was thrown as a result of an underground explosion.

One explanation for the craters is that climate change thawed previosuly frozen areas, which had caused methane trapped inside the icy ground to explode.

This theory was raised by German scientist Hans-Wolfgang Hubberten in Nature.

“Gas pressure increased until it was high enough to push away the overlying layers in a powerful injection, forming the crater,” he said.

Professor Bogoyavlensky told The Siberian Times he was anxious to investigate the craters further because of serious concerns for safety.

"Years of experience has shown that gas emissions can cause serious damage to drilling rigs, oil and gas fields and offshore pipelines"' he said.
