Abbott stays on as PM

Prime Minister Tony Abbott appeared to be in 'semi-shock' after a spill motion failed at a Liberal party meeting at Parliament House in Canberra.

The motion was defeated, 39 to 61 in favour of Mr Abbott.

According to Sky News, the result left the Prime Minister 'more shaken than ever before'.

Prior to the motion Mr Abbott reportedly appealed to his colleagues in the party room and promised to foster a more collegial government.

After exiting the party room, government whip Phillip Ruddock said “that seems to me to resolve the matter”.

“These matters are dealt with without debate. The result is clear," Mr Ruddock said.

Treasurer Joe Hockey was seen leaving the party room beaming, according to 2UE.

While Trade Minister Andrew Robb was asked if he's pleased with the decision and replied, 'absolutely'.

Tony Abbott delieved a short statement following the spill motion saying the people deserve to keep the prime minister they elected.

“We want to end the disunity, the uncertainty which destroyed two other governments, and give you the government you deserve. “I love this country and I will do my best to help our country to succeed," he said.

But even some of the Prime Minister's most ardent supporters now believe he is mortally wounded and cannot survive the year.

The crucial party room meeting was called to hear a motion to spill the leadership, moved by WA MP Luke Simpkins and seconded by WA colleague Don Randall.

101 MPs were in the room, and one MP *—* Ross Vasta from the Brisbane-based seat of Bonner — was on paternity leave.

The party room voted by secret ballot, with Mr Abbott saying last night how frontbenchers vote is "entirely" up to them.

MPs gathered knowing the dire results of the first Newspoll of the year, showing the Coalition trailing Labor 43 per cent to 57 per cent on a two-party preferred basis.

Malcolm Turnbull is by far the preferred leader against Mr Abbott, according to the poll.

Mr Abbott attended the non-denominational church service this morning, traditionally held on the first sitting day of the year, and urged MPs to put the leadership issue behind them as soon as the vote is done.

Tony Abbott's disastrous numbers in new poll.

As the Liberals get set to vote on Tony Abbott's leadership, the prime minister's approval rating is at a record low and the coalition has recorded its worst Newspoll result since 2009.

According to the latest Newspoll, published by News Corp, Mr Abbott is far from the public favourite.

The prime minister's performance rating has fallen nine points to 24 per cent - significantly below his previous low in June of 30 per cent.

Compared with the two likely contenders for the LNP leadership - Malcolm Turnbull and Julie Bishop - Mr Abbott is easily the least popular of the trio.

The poll, which was taken at the weekend, gave Mr Turnbull a 64 per cent to 25 per cent over Mr Abbott, while Ms Bishop was ahead of the prime minister 59 per cent to 27 per cent.

Meanwhile, the coalition's primary vote is down three points to an eight-month low of 35 per cent. Labor is up two points to 41 per cent, and the Greens are unchanged at 12 per cent.

In two-party terms, the government's vote is down to 43 per cent, with Labor on 57 per cent.
