Whitaker to Newsmax: Allies No Longer Taking Advantage
VIDEO
By Solange Reyner | Thursday, 27 August 2026 01:21 PM EDT
U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said Thursday that the alliance is on a "new trajectory" under President Donald Trump, with European members taking responsibility for the conventional defense of their own continent.
"Obviously, President Trump has been driving this for a long time to create a lot of changes with this alliance because of President Trump's leadership," Whitaker said on Newsmax's "Bianca Across the Nation." "We are now on a new trajectory here at NATO.
"Our European allies are taking over the conventional defense of the European continent. And I think that's good for the American taxpayers."
The ambassador said the shift is not simply a shedding of costs. "It actually creates jobs on both sides of the Atlantic," he said.

NASA head floats sending data centers to space

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman recently proposed putting artificial intelligence data centers in space, as communities raise concerns about the energy-hungry facilities being built across the country.
“Let’s take our data centers, put them in Earth orbit, take advantage of that free fusion reactor that’s out there for us and use that to ensure we do win the … space race for sure, but the AI race, too,” Isaacman said in an interview with Nexstar DC’s Vinay Simot.
Isaacman said moving data centers into orbit could have “immense benefits,” allowing companies to harness solar energy, which he described as his “free fusion reactor,” to power the facilities.
The proposal comes as data centers have become a source of controversy in communities across the country. Residents and local officials have raised concerns about the facilities’ electricity demands, which can strain power grids and increase utility costs, as well as their water consumption, noise, and other disruptions.

WHAT DARLINE GRAHAM’S WIN MEANS FOR THE GOP. It was hard to predict exactly how the runoff to choose the new Republican Senate candidate from South Carolina would work out. The whole process unfolded remarkably quickly following the unexpected death of Sen. Lindsey Graham on July 11. Since then, the state Republican Party organized a primary, held debates, and then held a runoff on Tuesday. It was won by Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, who is already in the Senate, having been appointed by Gov. Henry McMaster (R-SC) to serve out the final months of her brother’s term.
Sen. Darline Graham defeated her runoff opponent, Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC), 52%-48%. The result was widely seen as a victory for President Donald Trump, who encouraged Graham to run — she likely would not have done so had the president not actively pressed her. Trump’s influence had taken a couple of hits in South Carolina, in the governor’s race and in the redistricting battle, so the Senate runoff was seen as a test of whether he still has big-time clout in South Carolina. Answer: He does.
So Norman had one huge thing going against him. Who wants to run against Trump in a deep red state? That was especially true for Norman, because Trump remembered very well that in 2024, Norman supported former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s presidential campaign, which was premised on the Republican Party moving beyond Trump. After Norman’s defeat, Trump took a moment to rub it in. “Ralph Norman had the look of a good congressman (not great, but good), but ruined his career when he endorsed Nikki Haley,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

President Donald Trump offered praise for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) but stopped short of endorsing or supporting the lawmaker’s potential White House run in 2028.
“I would say that he’s very talented,” Trump said Thursday when asked about a Cruz bid during an Oval Office event. “He’s a very good friend of mine.”
The president did not explicitly say he was encouraging Cruz to run or that he would support the Texas senator launching a presidential campaign.

A new report said around 700 OpenAI agents were a part of the Hugging Face attack last month, and 1,200 collaborated through a message board.

About 700 OpenAI agents were involved in the breach on AI startup Hugging Face, independent researchers said in an Aug. 26 report.
OpenAI revealed last month that its AI agents—AI programs that run with minimal human intervention—were the ones that hacked into Hugging Face’s system.
Wednesday’s report by METR and Redwood Research revealed that hundreds of agents collaborated on the attack—about 700 out of 1,200 agents that sent 70,000 messages to each other between June 26 and July 13 on an unsanctioned messaging board.
“This incident is the first known case of an automated agent collective acting offensively without authorization,” OpenAI said in a separate investigative report that it also published on Aug. 26.

The Trump administration has paused immigrant visa appointments for applicants worldwide as the State Department launches a global training initiative at all U.S. embassies and consulates, according to a department spokesperson. Appointments for visa services will be rescheduled to accommodate the training.
The State Department offered no specific details on the training or its timeline. Officials said the initiative aims to help consular officers screen out applicants deemed likely to become dependent on U.S. public benefits. It is also intended to ensure evaluation of visa applicants comprehensively and consistently.
“A more prosperous America means ensuring that visa applicants are not likely to become a public charge, as defined under U.S. law and regulation, and not likely to become dependent on U.S. public benefits reserved for qualified Americans in need,” a State Department spokesperson said in an emailed statement to The Epoch Times.

During the Revolutionary War and before, war at sea was fought with some very different presumptions. The crews of warships were often as not paid in part by prize money, money earned from the ships and cargoes they captured. This process was handled by something called a maritime prize court. These courts would adjudicate the legality of any ship and cargo seizures under existing maritime law; they could also order the sale of ships and cargoes, with the proceeds going to the ship's company.
The recipients of prize money weren't always regular navy forces, either. Governments, including the newly formed United States government, would, in those times, issue something called a letter of marque, authorizing privately owned warships to hunt enemy ships on the high seas; these ships and their companies were called privateers. And, yes, the unfortunate side effect of that was that some of the privateers, when the war they were authorized to help fight ended, turned to piracy.
Now, though, the Department of Justice may be reactivating the maritime prize courts, something the United States has not done since our Civil War.

The Justice Department is preparing to activate a long-dormant maritime war court to streamline military capture of Iranian oil tankers as US prizes, according to three people familiar with the plans.
Reviving prize courts, which is expected to face legal challenges, is intended to strengthen the blockade of Iran and offset the cost of the conflict.
Aaron Reitz, the Houston-based US attorney whose office is partnering with department headquarters on the initiative, confirmed DOJ is “now reviving” prize courts, which he described as an “ancient body of maritime law.”
The unfinalized plans, if adopted, would offer a faster path for federal prosecutors to claim oil and other cargo taken from enemy or neutral vessels as US property. The seized goods would then be sold with proceeds transferred to the treasury.

There is a difference between a policy argument and a lie. The data center panic sweeping politics is mostly the second thing wearing the costume of the first.
Tax policy, immigration, healthcare: Reasonable people build competing arguments out of the same set of facts, shading emphasis to fit their priors. What’s happening with data centers is not that. It’s a fear campaign built on claims that don’t withstand scrutiny by the evidence, aimed at a piece of infrastructure most people have never seen or understood, which is exactly why it works. People are far more willing to believe the worst about the unknown than the best, and someone has figured out how to profit from that instinct.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that he doubts a diplomatic agreement can be reached with Iran’s leadership, recounting a recent conversation with President Donald Trump in which the two discussed the possibility of diplomacy, military action and increased economic pressure on Tehran.
Netanyahu said he discussed the options with Trump during their July 28 meeting at the White House and expressed doubts that negotiations could produce an agreement with Iran’s current leadership.
Recounting that conversation at an event Tuesday night, Netanyahu said he told Trump he was skeptical that an agreement could be reached with Iran.
“I doubt, however, that an agreement can be reached with that group there, with those savages,” Netanyahu said.
“I tell you — an agreement cannot be reached,” he added.
The remarks were made at an event in Jerusalem for Israeli settlers in the West Bank and were reported by AFP, with the comments independently carried by outlets including CBS News, Arab News and the Times of Israel.
