U.S. troops for Syria training mission seen moving to region soon

WASHINGTON, Jan 16 (Reuters) - Several hundred U.S. troops who will help train moderate Syrian militants to fight the Islamic State will begin moving to the region over the next four to six weeks, the Pentagon said on Friday.

Rear Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, told a briefing that some of the trainers and support troops could be given orders "within the next week or so" and would flow to countries where training will take place "over the next four to six weeks."

The U.S. military has said it is planning to send more than 400 soldiers to train Syrian rebels to fight Islamic State. They would be backed up by several hundred U.S. support troops.
