The ruthless murder of 17 people in Paris has shrunk the world. It has brought people from different continents together to condemn terrorism and politics that attack freedom.
Sunday's demonstration that drew more than a million people to the streets of Paris was led by prominent world leaders, who were there in person or in spirit.
They joined together to mourn and condemn the killing of the editorial staff of Charlie Hebdo, a French magazine known for its provocative cartoons, including depictions of the Prophet Muhammad that drew death threats from Muslim extremists. The gunmen reportedly were deployed by al Qaida.
And marchers joined to mourn and condemn the senseless slaying of three police officers and the four grocers who had been taken hostage in a kosher market by one of the fleeing gunmen.
Prime Minister Manuel Valls told the French National Assembly on Tuesday, "We are at war against jihadism and terrorism ... but France is not at war against Islam and Muslims."
Proclamations of "Je suis Charlie" and people holding up pens have become symbolic gestures of condemnation of terrorism and championing liberty and free speech.
"Solidarity and unity constitute the clearest response to those who despise our liberty and endeavor to destroy it," Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo told USA Today. "Following this monstrous attack, it is our duty to stand strong and firm."
Funerals for many of the people killed in the murderous attacks have been held this week.

The surviving editorial team of the magazine published the weekly edition, featuring a cover cartoon of a weeping Muhammad. Three million copies will be printed, in a number of languages, among them English, Arabic and Turkish.
The loss of 2,977 lives in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon has not been forgotten. It was a reminder that there are people who are inspired by evil to harm others including children, artists, police officers and firefighters trying to save lives.
In response to the Paris attacks, the world has come together to stand firmly against the mass murders and terrorism and in favor of liberty and greater tolerance.
As Secretary of State John Kerry said last week in a message to France: "Each and every American stands with you today."
