Iran Gen. Mohammad Ali Allahdadi Dies in Suspected Israel Strike on Syria

TEHRAN — An Iranian military general has been killed in a suspected Israeli airstrike in Syria, an official Iranian military news agency said Monday. Gen. Mohammad Ali Allahdadi was in the war-ravaged country giving "crucial advice" to the government, according to Sepah News, the official news agency of Iran's Revolutionary Guard.

According to the agency, Allahdadi was instructing Syrian President Bashar Assad "on how to rid their country of Salafist terrorists," a reference to the Sunni rebel groups locked in conflict with the government since 2011. Sepah News said the general was "martyred defending the people and holy sites of Syria." Gen. Allahdadi's death was also reported by FARS, Iran's semi-official government news agency. Israel has not acknowledged the strike, but a security source from the country confirmed to Reuters that it had carried out the operation.

Also killed in the strike, according to Reuters, were six Hezbollah fighters including the son of the group's late commander. The news agency reported that Jihad Mughniyeh was buried in Beirut alongside his father Imad Mughniyeh, who was assassinated in Damascus in 2008. The Lebanese militant group has been supporting Assad's regime during the Syrian conflict.
