Lawmakers: U.S. must act now to stop ISIS

A bipartisan chorus on Capitol Hill is calling for the United States to waste no time hitting back at the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, the terrorist group that claimed Tuesday to have executed American journalist Steven Sotloff.

“Let there be no doubt, we must go after ISIS right away because the U.S. is the only one that can put together a coalition to stop this group that’s intent on barbaric cruelty,” said Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said that “condemnation is not enough to deal with this scourge.”

“It is time we act decisively against [ISIS] wherever it resides,” Graham said. “Whenever American air power has been employed, in coordination with reliable partners on the ground, [ISIS] has been devastated. It’s a tactic that should be aggressively pursued both in Syria and Iraq.”

Nelson and Graham sit on the Senate Armed Services Committee.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce, R-Calif., said the U.S., while working with key allies, “needs to be acting urgently to arm the Kurds on the ground who are fighting [ISIS], and targeting ISIS from the air with drone strikes.”

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., in referring to the violent terrorist group, said there is “no disease that becomes easier to treat the longer you wait.”

“If we do not act now to assist our Iraqi partners and moderate Syrians who oppose [ISIS], as well as utilize our own forces to directly target [ISIS] leadership, the result will be more suffering and tragedy for our people,” Rubio said.

Sotloff, a freelance journalist, went missing in Syria in August 2013.

ISIS also executed U.S. freelance journalist James Foley two weeks ago.
