Recruiter wanted to bring fear to our shores

September 19, 2014, 5:13 am Sydney man Mohammad Ali Baryalei once sought fame as an actor but he has found infamy as one of Australia's most notorious terrorists.

Baryalei - a former Kings Cross bouncer - had a bit part in the long-running TV series Underbelly ,playing a paramedic.

He has since discovered his true talent - recruiting Australians to fight for the barbaric Sunni insurgent group Islamic State.

Police believe Baryalei travelled to Syria last year and has since taken his place as a senior member of the IS leadership group there.

He is thought to have recruited half of the 60 Australians fighting in Iraq and Syria with IS.

Among his recruits is former Sydneysider Khaled Sharrouf, who sparked an outpouring of revulsion after he posted images on social media of his own son posing with a severed head in Syria.

It now appears it was this kind of horror that Baryalei wanted to bring to the streets of Australia.

It was claimed yesterday that Baryalei had called his contacts here to urge them to carry out a campaign of random public beheadings in a bid to terrify the Australian community.

He is said to have issued an instruction to his followers to kidnap people in Sydney and Brisbane and film their executions.

The video could then be posted online under the banner of IS.

While not naming Baryalei directly, Tony Abbott confirmed some of those arrested in yesterday's raids were in contact with an Australian overseas fighting with IS.

"The exhortations, quite direct exhortations, were coming from an Australian, who is apparently quite senior in IS, to networks of support back in Australia to conduct demonstration killings here in this country," the Prime Minister said.

"So this is not just suspicion, this is intent and that's why the police and security agencies decided to act in the way they have."

Baryalei, the son of Afghan refugees, gathered a lot of followers preaching a radical brand of Islam in Sydney as part of the Street Dawah movement.

Australian Federal Police this month issued an arrest warrant for Baryalei for terrorism-related activities. At least seven of those Australians he has recruited to fight in Iraq and Syria have been killed in fighting.
