British forces should join US airstrikes on Iraq in the wake of the murder of an American journalist, Jack Straw, the former foreign secretary has said.
Mr Straw said said the time had "probably" come for Britain to join airstrikes against Isil fighters who pose a “threat to civilisation” and said the allies could not be “paralysed” by the legacy of Iraq.
He issued a withering critique of President Obama’s foreign policy, saying he is “long on analysis” and indecisive.
He was speaking as David Cameron chaired a meeting of the COBR emergency response committee after a fighter with a British accent was filmed murdering Stephen Sotloff, an American journalist. The life of a British hostage has been threatened.
Mr Straw, who was foreign secretary when the British hostage Ken Bigley was murdered, said there was evidence the hostages had been killed “some time ago”.

Asked whether Britain should join US airstrikes on Iraq he said: “My instincts would be probably to do so.”
“No one is more aware than I am of the legacy of the 2003 Iraq war. Of course we should learn the lessons of the past, but we should not be paralysed by the past at the same time.
"These barbaric jihadists were doing this kind of atrocity before the Iraq war, and they would do it irrespective of the Iraq war. They are a serious threat to civilisation.”
Mr Straw said David Cameron does not need to seek the authorisation of Parliament to launch strikes, saying “everybody would understand” if it was deemed necessary for security reasons.
President Obama “bears a burden in respect of the past,” he told BBC Radio 4.
“Much though I respect him, I think, if you like, he is very long on analysis and not quite as fleet as foot at being decisive, and you need a balance if you are the President of the United States.
“It’s a difficult job being the President of the United States, but I certainly think this Nato summit provides an opportunity for some very clear leadership by the United States.”
